Steve Masakowski, Big Easy Innovator: The Life and Work of the New Orleans Jazz Guitarist and Educator (in Color)
Steve Masakowski jokes modestly that he's probably best known now in New Orleans as the father of his daughter Sasha, a rising star on the jazz and pop scene. That belies his world-class performances with the city's leading modern-jazz group, Astral Project, and other renowned local and touring jazz artists. His career has had several other innovative threads, including the electronic fusion group Mars, multi-year duets with Ellis Marsalis, and running the Composers Recording Studio in the 1980s; nine albums as a leader, including two for the prestigious Blue Note Records in the 1990s; and more recently, performances and recordings with his talented family. His early adoption of self-designed seven-string guitars, his invention of the keytar, and his specially designed switch-pick all bear witness to his creativity. Highly respected as a jazz educator, he is a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Orleans, where he holds the position of Coca-Cola Endowed Chair and Director of Jazz Studies. Drawing on interviews with Steve and some 40 other New Orleans musicians as well as an inconceivable quantity of other research, this book examines all facets of his career and his recordings as leader and sideman. Essential reading for fans of Steve, Astral Project, New Orleans music, and jazz guitar.

This and "Campaign for the Environment" demonstrate the power of social activism. "Pretty Boy", about a lonely, widowed grandfather and the love he shares with a parakeet, develops into a violent, haunting story of his family, which is more dysfunctional than most. It time travels through three generations with their pet birds, turtles, and dog, all marked for vicious conflict. It's a meditation on the essence of love and violence."Earline" is the story of a teen-aged African American maid, who comes north and deals with racism. It is an indelible portrait of respect, justice, and dignity. "Highschool Confidential" is a coming-of-age story with a gender-bending twist that will likely leave you chuckling at a red-hot teenage love affair viewed in retrospect forty years after. Enjoy "Unconfirmed Jew" wherein the author marries into the mob. "Nobody's Fool" is a situation comedy on-site with Mafia hoods in the Bronx and back in the author's Manhattan sales office, reporting to his father and sassy secretary. And from beginning to end, there is a series of camp stories that transport you to the Adirondack Mountains. A place where: bees attack in swarms, horses go berserk, and counselors abuse children.Overall, the author's emotional resilience and insouciant sense of humor will get you through the terror and pain of the stories; This coupled with vivid real-to-life dialog brings all of the characters to life. Colorfully woven throughout the book's fabric, there are spell-binding stories about alternative health and spiritual stories about life, death, and eternity. It is all authentic and priceless.
Overcoming Impossible Odds: The Steve Bottrill Story
A horrific accident almost tragically ended my life. Read about how I defied the odds and overcame certain death and disability to do the extraordinary. Read how I went from a coma to become an inspiration, from not being able to walk to sprinting against a national track runner, not having the ability to read or write to teaching advanced math and writing essays. That fateful, devastating accident changed my life forever. They said there was no hope for my survival. Medical professionals prepared my parents and fianc for my imminent death; it was just a matter of time. If I did somehow survive, I would never be the same with the massive brain damage I had sustained. I would likely not remember anyone. I would never walk again or talk again or be independent ever again. I would most likely be connected to medical machines my entire life. My real life story will give you new hope and encouragement. Let me inspire you to be the best you can be.
