Thomas Becket

The construction and deconstruction of Becket's reputation is central to this provocative new study. The cult of Becket has remained enduring: it was the centerpiece of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; and in our own time it has carried powerful enough resonance to generate interpretations from T.S. Eliot, Jean Anouilh, and indeed Hollywood. This book investigates whether the popular conception of Becket through the ages is a result of valid assessments of the man and his cause, or a product of a carefully constructed myth, and how far can one correct for the bias and reach the truth.

Thomas Hooker: Preacher, Founder, Democrat; Biography of the Puritan Leader of Colonial New England
Puritan minister, colonial pioneer, and inspiration for the first ever democratic constitution - Thomas Hooker's fine example of religious and public service is explored in this biography.During his researches into the local history of Connecticut and the Hartford Church, George Leon Walker uncovered enough information to justify a biography of Thomas Hooker. After several years of meticulous research, corroborating historical sources, accounts and records of the early colonial period with Hooker's own surviving written works, he published this account of the great preacher's life and achievements in 1891.We follow Thomas Hooker from his youth in an England rent by religious conflict, through his education at Cambridge University, through initial demonstrations of his great and inspiring oratorical gifts. His sympathy for Puritanism in the 1620s disrupted his quiet life as a preacher and lecturer in England, and he was forced to leave the country for the Netherlands, and then onward to New England.

Thomas Cranmer and the English Reformation 1489-1556
Published in 1965: It has been maintained by an eminent scholar recently dead that the chief content of modern history is the emancipation of conscience from the control of authority. From that point of view the student of Tudor times will not be exclusive in his choice of heroes. He will find room in his calendar of saints for More as well as for Cranmer. Both had grave imperfections, and both took their share in enforcing the claims of authority over those of conscience. Nor perhaps is it true to say that they died in order that we might be free; but they died for conscience' sake, and unless they and others had died conscience would still be in chains. That was Cranmer's service in the cause of humanity his Church owes him no less, for in the Book of Common Prayer he gave it the most effective of all its possessions.
