'Excellent . . . Fresh, learned, readable and full of life' Dan Jones, Mail on Sunday Houses of Power is the result of Simon Thurley's thirty years of research, picking through architectural digs, and examining financial accounts, original plans and drawings to reconstruct the great Tudor houses and understand how these monarchs shaped their lives.________What was it like to live as a royal Tudor? Why were their residences built as they were and what went on inside their walls? Who slept where and with who? Who chose the furnishings? And what were their passions?________The Tudors ruled through the day, throughout the night, in the bath, in bed and in the saddle. Their palaces were genuine power houses - the nerve-centre of military operations, the boardroom for all executive decisions and the core of international politics. Far more than simply an architectural history - a study of private life as well as politics, diplomacy and court - it gives an entirely new and remarkable insight into the Tudor world.

'You can reinvent yourself, you can change, you can grow, you can regress, you can be any number of things at any particular time. Please give yourself permission to do that, and be equally as open-minded to others who choose to do the same. Because perhaps, with just a little more compassion and acceptance, we won't need to fit in to feel that we belong.'Camilla Thurlow came second on Love Island in 2017. More recently, she impressed viewers in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. But that's not the most interesting part . . .Camilla can do something that none of her fellow contestants can do: find, neutralise and destroy the landmines that threaten the lives and livelihoods of so many people in the world's former war zones, and which make their land too dangerous to be worked. This is at once a memoir of an extraordinary life, and a script for living one's life to the full. Camilla Thurlow is a highly independent woman whose thoughts and experience will resonate with anyone seeking meaning in a world where women are too often discounted, or who frequently feel alienated amid the frenzy of contemporary life. This is a book about courage - not just the courage to go out and deal with a lethal threat in some of the world's most dangerous and inhospitable places, but the courage to confront one's own fears and anxieties, and to be oneself in what too often seems an inhospitable world. Not the Type will inspire a whole generation to dare the seemingly impossible. Although often an engaging reflection on life, landmines and Love Island, this is also a book about learning to confront one's own anxieties in a world dominated by celebrity culture and social media - and on being a woman in what is still too often a man's world.

Come to Jesus: What if God Designs Your Days to Keep You Running Back to Him?
What if God puts hard things into your life so you'll bring them back to him? Maybe God fills our days with lots of reminders to come running back to him for help-not so we'll spend our days full of frustration and tears, but so we'll end our days closer and closer to him. This is the heartbeat behind Come to Jesus. A collection of ways God has brought me closer to him through times of unbelief, loneliness, and uncertainty plus a call for you to bring your hard back to the One who gave it to you. Because maybe that was his purpose in giving it to you all along-not to see how much you can carry but to display his glory and strength as he carries you.ENDORSEMENTS"We need constant reminders that, in everything, we can go to Jesus. I'm grateful for Christa's helpful and beautiful call to do just that through the pages of this book." -Christine Hoover, author of Searching for Spring "This small book has rooted itself in my heart, and since reading it, I've stopped in my wrong-way track more than once to remind myself to run to Jesus with my fears, doubts, sorrows, and temptations." -Claudia Barba, author of Sovereign Hope"Are you lonely? Overwhelmed? Battling unbelief? In this book, Christa speaks to women of all ages in a refreshingly simple yet profound style. She offers a glimpse into her own life to communicate the convincing message that you can and should come to Jesus regardless of who you are or where you find yourself in life." -Gretchen Fant, speaker, counselor, and veteran pastor's wife "At this point in history, things look bleak for so many. And at this point in history, there are so many voices telling us how to fix our lives so that things will not look so bleak. Never before have we needed wise women to say it over and over again: Come to Jesus. He is the author. Come to Jesus, He is the fixer. Come to Jesus, He is the comfort. You'll love this gentle and timely word from Christa and it will leave you wanting more of Jesus, and knowing exactly where to find Him." -Jess Connolly, coauthor of Wild and Free and author of Dance Stand Run

1936. Spain erupts in civil war. The Republic forms an International Brigade and calls for volunteers to combat a Nationalist uprising led by General Franco. After his best friend Jimmy is killed by a police baton on a hunger march to London, Glaswegian Robbie Gillan has a fist fight with the mortician. The police are called and sympathetic nurse Alice Sheridan gives Robbie £5 when he tells her he wants to join the battle in Spain. Alice’s twin brother Simon argues with his father over Spain and leaves on the night ferry for Paris where the volunteers are gathering. In a knife fight with Franco loyalists, Robbie Gillan saves Simon’s life and the two men, opposites in class and temperament, cross France and climb the Pyrenees to Spain. Alice, drawn by emotions that are not entirely clear to her, soon follows with the Red Cross. The battle cry of the Spanish Republic was No pasarán. Pasaremos. They shall not pass. We Shall Pass – the defining spirit of this gripping novel that takes us into the heart of war and reveals the enduring power of love, hope and defiance as Robbie and Alice must overcome every obstacle to be together.
Argument and Theology in 1 Peter

Argument and Theology in 1 Peter

Lauri Thurén

Sheffield Academic Press
1995
sidottu
Using both ancient and modern rhetoric, linguistics, and argumentation theory, this study offers a fresh approach to 1 Peter and New Testament ethics. It is often claimed that the growing interest in paraenesis, or ethical teaching, among early Christians indicates how Jesus' revolutionary teaching and the Pauline notion of justification by faith were gradually replaced by an emphasis on good works and ethics borrowed from the surrounding Hellenistic and Jewish culture. The Motivation of the Paraenesis challenges this traditional view of ethics in early Christianity, arguing that paraenesis was an original, essential part of early Christian doctrine and life. The book also provides a new, well-balanced picture of 1 Peter and its message, giving a natural interpretation to many puzzling sections and clarifying the internal logic of the text and the theology behind it.
Murder in the Dark

Murder in the Dark

Norvik Press

Murder in the Dark sports a winning combination of engaging crime narrative and cool, unsentimental appraisal of Scandinavian society (as seen through the eyes of its shabby, unconventional anti-hero). There are elements of the book which now seem quite as relevant as when they were written, and like all the most accomplished writing in the Nordic Noir field, there is an acute and well-observed sense of place throughout the novel. The descriptions of Copenhagen channel the poetic sensibility which is the author's own: 'Copenhagen is at its most beautiful when seen out of a taxi at midnight, right at that magical moment when one day dies and another is born, and the printing presses are buzzing with the morning newspapers.'
