Tony Franz (*1985) challenges the perceptual habits of his viewers. His technically sophisticated drawings - done unfailingly with pencil on paper - open up diverse associative spaces. Franz always approaches his pictorial themes anew, deceiving the eye on a high illusionistic level and examining the close relationship between text and drawing. Drawing as a medium therefore allows him to reflect on the in part subconscious, in part superficial way in which images and words are perceived. To this day, the Cardiff Giant is one of the most incredible scientific forgeries in the history of North American archaeology. The stone figure is named after the site where it was discovered in upstate New York. George Hull, an atheist, had become acquainted with the Bible verse Genesis 6:4 at a methodist revival meeting. It inspired him to have an oversize stone figure carved that he subsequently buried in the ground on the property of his accomplice William Newell. One year later, they arranged to have a well dug on the site, and during the excavation the giant was discovered . The sensational discovery of the primeval giant was reported on in newspapers all over the country. The strategy was successful, drawing numerous sightseers who were allowed to view the giant for a fee. Although the figure was soon revealed to be a fake, the story of the giant generated its own momentum that even convinced scholars to develop theories about the prehistoric period. With his Cardiff Giant , Tony Oursler creates an entertaining and abysmal parable of double standards and the loss of trust in the great Western narrative of science and progress.

The Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo revolutionized reforestation in Africa with Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR). His method is based on deploying tree stumps and roots that still grow even in degraded landscapes: thanks to the protection and care of the shoots, the original tree population can be regenerated without major financial costs. The method is now successfully applied in at least 24 African countries. Where the desert was still expanding 20 years ago, farmers reforest large areas with FMNR: in Niger alone seven million hectares of land were already restored in this way. Up to 700 million people will possibly be obliged to leave their homelands during the next three decades because of increasing desertification in the landscapes where they live. In the opinion of scientists, there is only one hope: to convince the local farmers of 'sustainable land management'. Tony Rinaudo believes that with FMNR he has found the appropriate method for such management - and just in time to stop, or even to be able to reverse the destruction of livelihoods.
