Until her death at the age of 59 she published several novels, feminist essays and held two classes in Cambridge about "Women and Fiction." In this term paper I would like to introduce the feminism aspects of her life and novels, and give an over-view of the essays she wrote. After giving a short introduction with the most important facts about Virginia Woolf's life, my first intention is to define the theory of feminism and show how it affected Virginia already as a young girl and mainly as an independent woman. Later, three of her novels are taken to demonstrate how Virginia Woolf's development influenced her literary output. I would also like to show the differences between Virginia Woolf's attitude towards women and men and compare it to theories of the feministic movement in the 20th century. This will be followed by a summary and conclusion, and a Bibliography, which only shows the most relevant books published for this subject, for there are numerous biographies and essays written on Virginia Woolf's life.

Vielleicht aber k nnen einige davon, seit dem 2002 verfilmten Kinofilm The Hours, der einen kleinen Einblick in das Leben, das Schaffen und die psychischen Probleme dieser Schriftstellerin gibt, zumindest behaupten, sie h tten den Namen schon einmal geh rt. Die restlichen Verbleibenden werden mit dem Namen dieser wichtigen englischen Autorin eine Vielzahl von Assoziationen verbinden k nnen, wie beispielsweise den Begriff des Modernismus als Epochen- und Gattungsbeschreibung, einige Titel ihrer bekannten Werke aus eben dieser Zeit (z.B. Mrs. Dalloway, To the lighthouse), Virginia Woolfs psychischen Probleme und Krankheiten und letztlich ihren tragischen Selbstmord. All denen, die keinerlei Vorstellung von ihrer Person und ihrem Schaffen als Schriftstellerin in dieser modernistisch gepr gten Phase der Literaturgeschichte haben, sollen die folgenden Seiten Aufschluss und einen kleinen Einblick geben. Ich m chte dabei zuerst den Fokus auf das Leben und die Biographie Virginia Woolfs legen und danach den Begriff Modernismus verdeutlichen bevor ich auf den zeitgeschichtlichen Hintergrund eingehe, innerhalb dessen diese neue Orientierung in der Literaturgeschichte entstanden ist. Sowohl ihr Leben, als auch der Kontext sind bedeutende Faktoren, die ihre Arbeit als Autorin wesentlich beeinflusst haben. Im zweiten Teil werde ich dann auf die neu entstandenen gattungsspezifischen Merkmale der Romanform des Modernismus eingehen, indem ich zentrale Merkmale und Charakteristika (sowohl formaler als auch inhaltlicher Art) anf hre. Virginia Woolf war ein literarisches Genie und eine Wegbereiterin der Emanzipation der Frauen. Virginia konnte in Zeiten der Manie, Psychose und Depression nicht mehr schreiben. Birgit Seibold gew hrt in ihrem j ngsten Werk nicht nur faszinierende Einblicke in Virginia Woolfs Leben, Leiden und Schreiben, sondern wendet sich auch an Betroffene und Angeh rige von Manisch-Depressiven und macht ihnen Mut, Episoden zu berstehen, indem sie aufzeigt, dass ein bipolarer Mensch trotz oder gerade aufgrund seiner Krankheit Gro es vollbringen kann. Zwar ist es ein Leben, das nach einer manischen Episode immer wieder bei Null anf ngt, aber auch ein solches l sst sich meistern. Das Buch ist ebenso empfehlenswert f r Psychiater und Psychologen, denn Virginia und Leonard Woolf beschreiben darin akribisch Virginias Befindlichkeiten - Gef hle, die ein Arzt oder Psychologe so blicherweise nicht h rt. Es ist somit ein Buch f r Betroffene, Angeh rige, rzte und Psychologen und alle, die sich f r Virginia Woolf interessieren.

This book explores a wide array of literary productions authored by French-speaking writers in which Virginia Woolf appears as a biographical subject or a fictional character. The ensemble of bio/fictional narratives reveals how Woolf’s ideas and ideals resonate with French authors and common readers; they inform us about Woolf’s iconicity and the universal values she stood for, which mirror current literary, cultural and political concerns and debates in France. Based on a close examination of twenty-five works published between 1956 and 2023, and authored by writers with eclectic professional backgrounds, the book surveys various portraits of Woolf as a feminist, a troubled genius prone to bouts of madness, a gifted innovative writer carried by the flow of her creative process, a woman in love, a competitive sister, an overprotected wife, a delighted sightseer in France, and a tormented, suicidal figure. Woolf’s numerous representations as a character in French literature attest that she has acquired a reputation outside the English-speaking realm and has the capacity to adapt to other literary and cultural backgrounds. Her adoption by the French has proved to be mutually beneficial: Woolf has copiously nourished the French imagination; in turn, the French have contributed to augmenting Woolf’s cultural capital and reinforcing her literary status beyond the geographical borders in which she was born and the cultural tradition in which she has been exerting a continuous influence for more than a century.

Virginia Woolf and Capitalism explores Woolf’s engagement with and critiques of capitalism throughout her life, arguing for its central importance in our understanding of her as an author, activist and publisher. Galvanised by existing scholarship on the place of economics, class, gender and empire in Woolf’s writing, this collection draws attention to her thinking about history, labour and economics and gives space for understandings of Woolf in the context of our own late-capitalist moment. Chapters by leading and emerging scholars range across Woolf's oeuvre in all its generic diversity, from her earliest short fiction and Night and Day to Three Guineas and Between the Acts, showcasing a range of critical approaches from the archival to the creative to the pedagogical. Motherhood is a recurrent theme in Virginia Woolf’s writing yet Woolf scholarship has often overlooked this dynamic subject. Exploring how Woolf engaged with themes of motherhood as a socially and politically motivated writer and a woman, this book grounds her work in the maternal discourses of her time.
