'Engaging and hopeful' New Scientist A fascinating exploration of how losing our sense of smell can shape our world, and how the global pandemic transformed our understanding of this mysterious sense. When award-winning reporter Paola Totaro lost her sense of smell to Covid in March 2020, her world changed and dulled in an instant. Trapped in a sensory vacuum without fragrance or flavour, she embarked on a journey of discovery to unravel the mysteries – and eccentricities – of the fifth sense. Our sense of smell shapes our everyday experiences in ways we often don’t even notice. Its loss can affect our emotional wellbeing, our relationships, our ability to interpret the world around us – and yet it has long been regarded as the least important of our senses. But almost overnight, Covid changed everything. As it became clear that loss of smell was a key symptom and the number of sufferers exploded, olfactory researchers suddenly found themselves thrust into the spotlight, with more attention, subjects and funding than ever before. On the Scent is the story of a quest for answers, from the theories of ancient philosophers to the cutting-edge laboratories of 21st century neuroscience. It looks at the extraordinary experiences of patients and scientists alike, offering a unique glimpse into the world of those born without smell as well as those who lose it; exploring how smell can be a key indicator of declining physical health; and showing how new research may offer hope to the millions of people worldwide who have suffered sensory loss. "An enthralling, elegantly written, and poignant exploration of our most neglected sense, one whose role in human life – in memory, emotion, attachment – has suddenly been made vivid by loss.” Peter Godfrey-Smith, author of the bestselling OTHER MINDS "Such an engaging and pleasurable read which should do a lot to lift smell out of the shadows ... packed with insights and observations that bring this topic to life for everyone" Professor Barry Smith, Centre for the Study of the Senses, University of London "Destined to be a bible for anyone who has lost their sense of smell, whether from Covid or not" Chrissi Kelly, AbScent

Sing Us A Song Ma, Before We Say Goodbye is a lively, vividly rendered and extremely moving memoir of Johnny Slater's childhood in war-torn Liverpool. Written by his daughter Carol, it follows Johnny from the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, right up until his period of National Service from 1954-1956. It tracks the progress of Johnny, his brother Jimmy, sister Cath, Ma, Da, Aunty Julia and his four-legged friends, Punch and Judy - through the devastation of the Liverpool Blitz, their evacuation to a country farm (and the first sight of cows for the children), Johnny's school years, D-Day, first love, and the devastating tragedy that befalls the family during Johnny's time in the army. It is full of detail and colour, painting an exuberant and loving picture of working class life in Kirkdale, on the banks of the Mersey, where life was often hard and money in short supply, but where communities pulled together, family was everything and it only took a chippy dinner or a bonfire to send a small boy into paroxysms of joy. The dialect-driven dialogue creates a rich sense of place, and the characters are full of life and love, so that the untimely death of one of them at the end of the narrative is profoundly moving and tragic.
The Self in Health and Illness

This book contains a foreword by Elliot G Mishler - professor of Social Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School. Patients' views of their identity change with illness, as do health professionals' views of them. This book discusses how and why this happens, and examines how more awareness of this phenomenon can lead to better care. Providing examples from diverse clinical settings, "The Self in Health and Illness" brings together writers from a range of backgrounds including health science, anthropology, sociology, psychology, nursing, medical ethics and healthcare. It considers the narrative self (or constructions of identity) and its place within healthcare and the medical humanities, and assists in clarifying the understanding of 'self' in the context of illness, health and medicine. An enlightening read for all doctors, especially those with an interest in medical humanities, this anthology is also invaluable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of medical humanities, researchers in health sciences and medical ethics. It will also be of great interest to medical anthropologists, psychologists, psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals. 'If you ask people questions about their lives they tell stories that express some version of "who" they are. Within the healthcare field, narrative researchers from various health professions and social science disciplines have been particularly interested in the potential impact of disability and illness on patient identities. What we find here is an array of quite systematic approaches to the complexities with which people narrate, perform, and possibly transform their identities through their stories. This is a serious undertaking and the editors and authors of these papers treat it with deep respect for our common struggle to make sense of our lives by achieving identities we can live with.' - Elliot G Mishler, in the Foreword.

Minami Kobayashi (b.1989) is a Japanese artist based in London. Covering a significant period of development in her practice as a painter, this publication coincides with her second major solo exhibition, The Song of Jujubes, at Frestonian Gallery, London. Kobayashi’s paintings depict familiar yet surreal scenes, created from an amalgamation of memories, places and ordinary people. In her dreamlike ambiguous narratives, nature, animals and humans are given equal status; her realms are symbiotic societies with multiple creatures. She captures transitory and fluctuating moments, depicting her protagonists in states of flux, vulnerability and openness. Rendered in a postImpressionist palette, her compositions are a potent mix of playfulness and deeper themes of human and natural life. Bringing together eleven new canvases, The Song of Jujubes takes its title from a song that the artist used to sing as a teenager in her hometown of Nagoya, Japan. It begins with a girl eating one jujube fruit every night, wondering what she will do when they are all gone. Imbued with a sense of nostalgia and loss, the works consider what ‘home’ means and the strong relationship between people and place. This publication documents Kobayashi’s paintings chronologically, from her early works of 2016 to 2024. In a foreword, the Directors of Frestonian Gallery, Matt Incledon and Rollo Campbell introduce the inner world of the artist and the themes of The Song of Jujubes. In an interview with Lisa Wainwright, Kobayashi discusses her time studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, her unique painting technique and the symbolism in her scenes. She also expands upon her artistic influences, including Ukiyoe woodblock prints, the tenets of Buddhism, Tarot and the Nabi painters, such as Félix Vallotton, Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. In her essay ‘Temperature of a Memory’, Laura Allsop analyses Kobayashi’s recent paintings in relation to memory and place, particularly the artist’s hometown of Nagoya. Edited by Incledon and designed by Joe Gilmore, the book is copublished by Frestonian Gallery and Anomie Publishing, London. Minami Kobayashi (b.1989, Nagoya, Japan) lives and works in London. She holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago (2018) and a BA in Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts (2016). Kobayashi makes figurative paintings that combine intimacy and mystery through their depictions of ordinary people, animals and places that seem vaguely surreal and ever so slightly offkilter. Recent solo or duo exhibitions include I Spell a Word to Free You (with Adrianne Rubinstein) at Et Al Gallery, San Francisco (2024), Place and Presence (with Patrick Procktor) at Frestonian Gallery (2023) and Somewhere not here at Goldfinch Gallery, Chicago (2022).

This open access book is a coherent and accessible source of knowledge on flexibility services for energy. Local flexibility services are a commercial mechanism which allows participants to be renumerated for delivering a change in their usual power use, in real time or in response to prior request from the Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to help manage network congestion. Summarising key outputs from the Energy Networks Association’s (ENA) Open Networks Programme, the book traces the evolution of local flexibility markets from 'Proof of Concept' to 'Business as Usual'. The book presents detailed technical and organisational insights from the development of local flexibility markets, focusing on inception, standardization, simplification, and transparency in decision-making across GB DSOs and interactions with the National Energy System Operator (NESO). Readers will find valuable comparisons of implementation approaches by different network companies, highlighting technical nuances and best practices. Ideal for researchers, energy professionals, and policymakers, this book provides a critical resource for understanding the complexities and opportunities of flexibility services in energy systems. Whether you are involved in energy management, policy development, or academic research, this book offers essential insights into the future of energy flexibility and grid management.

Photographic venture into the grand architectural settings of museums, stately homes, and academiesKaren Knorr's photographic series Connoisseurs & Academies induce a kaleidoscope of memories: Photographed between 1986 and 2005 with an analog camera, her images let us venture into the intricate world of the history of museums and stately homes, of objects, paintings, connoisseurship, and the structures of academies. The use of animals as an allegorical motif is today embedded in Knorr's practice, but they first appear in Connoisseurs, where a chimpanzee becomes the Genius of the Place. Karen Knorr's (b. 1954) works are in the collections of the Tate and Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Mus e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, SFMOMA, San Francisco, National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) in Bangalore, among others.
Statistical Learning with Sparsity

Discover New Methods for Dealing with High-Dimensional DataA sparse statistical model has only a small number of nonzero parameters or weights; therefore, it is much easier to estimate and interpret than a dense model. Statistical Learning with Sparsity: The Lasso and Generalizations presents methods that exploit sparsity to help recover the underlying signal in a set of data.Top experts in this rapidly evolving field, the authors describe the lasso for linear regression and a simple coordinate descent algorithm for its computation. They discuss the application of l1 penalties to generalized linear models and support vector machines, cover generalized penalties such as the elastic net and group lasso, and review numerical methods for optimization. They also present statistical inference methods for fitted (lasso) models, including the bootstrap, Bayesian methods, and recently developed approaches. In addition, the book examines matrix decomposition, sparse multivariate analysis, graphical models, and compressed sensing. It concludes with a survey of theoretical results for the lasso. In this age of big data, the number of features measured on a person or object can be large and might be larger than the number of observations. This book shows how the sparsity assumption allows us to tackle these problems and extract useful and reproducible patterns from big datasets. Data analysts, computer scientists, and theorists will appreciate this thorough and up-to-date treatment of sparse statistical modeling.

The Mediterranean has been subject to changing human settlement and land use patterns for millennia, and has a history of human exploitation in an inherently unstable landscape. Environmental Issues in the Mediterranean reviews both physical and social aspects of this region, in relation to its environment.Ideal for students who are studying a range of environmental issues, but want to see them linked within one regional context. The book begins with an introduction to the Mediterranean region, its history, physical and human geography and its environmental problems. It then goes on to examine:* The Dynamic Environment - climate variables and fluctuations, vegetation, the hydrological cycle of the basin and its watershed, processes of erosion, fire and the Mediterranean Sea*The Human Impact on the Environment - prehistoric and historic land use, traditional agriculture, rural and urban settlement and use of mineral resources* The Mediterranean Environment Under Increasing Pressure - the present human landscape, changes in agriculture in the 20th century, the impact of depopulation, pollution, water resources, desertification and potential climatic change. It then concludes with a discussion of the region's on-going environmental issues of water resources, land degradation, agricultural intensification and tourism, and considers how these can be approached using management techniques and national and regional policies.
