R sum Ch ri-Bibi serait peut- tre devenu pirate si la fatalit n'avait jet devant l' trave du navire dont il vient de se rendre ma tre le marquis du Touchais, poux indigne de la jeune femme qu'il adore, C cily. Obtenir du marquis une somme qui assure tous les for ats une existence dor e ne suffit pas sa soif de vengeance. Il a l'id e d'utiliser la science du Kanak, un chirurgien condamn pour anthropophagie. Avec son aide, il prend litt ralement la peau du marquis et seul le fid le La Ficelle s'en rend compte (Cf. Les Cages flottantes). Voici donc Ch ri-Bibi m tamorphos en marquis du Touchais et rentr en France. Va-t-il enfin conna tre le bonheur aupr s de C cily - et la douceur d'identifier l'homme au chapeau gris la place de qui il a t envoy au bagne? Oui, pour la premi re partie du programme, mais pas sans peine et juste le temps d'avoir un fils, car le Kanak survient avec l'intention de le faire chanter. La vie de marquis homme rang et bon p re de famille a un peu rouill Ch ri-Bibi, mais il a conserv assez de ressort pour se tirer des chausses-trappes que le destin creuse chaque instant sous ses pas, quitte se jeter au feu pour pr server l'honneur des siens ? et c'est dans l'apoth ose d'un incendie que s'ach ve ce second volume des aventures du c l bre, redoutable et tendre Ch ri-Bibi.
