An intimate, one-of-a-kind photographic journey that documents Liam Wong’s nocturnal wanderings through the world’s most captivating cities. In this singular photographic publication, Liam Wong weaves together a series of cinematic images that reveal the people and places, the slivers of life, that inhabit the mysterious space of night-time cities. Through his previous work as a videogame designer, Wong learned that ‘real life is just as potent, bizarre and interesting as things we can imagine’. From Hong Kong and Seoul to London and Edinburgh, After Dark reveals shadowy cityscapes through the eyes of the insomniac artist. For centuries, artists have found both solace and fruitfulness in solitude. Through sleepless and solitary nights, After Dark explores the phenomenon of loneliness in city life, capturing urban interstices between dusk and dawn: the eerie emptiness of London’s Piccadilly Circus at 4:00 a.m., Seoul’s late-night taxi drivers moving along hushed roads and birds sharing the warmth of a neon sign in Hong Kong’s TSM District – mysterious silhouettes representing lives lived in shadow, portrayed as intricate cinematic visions, all before the sun rises. Building on the success of his first monograph, TO:KY:OO, Wong widens his lens to capture the night in the world’s most exciting cities. From workers leaving their night shifts to empty streets illuminated by neon signs, Wong charts the hours of darkness as populated scenes become deserted ones. The book’s photography – framed to specific film ratios – is imbued with a cinematic intensity underscored by Wong’s interest in film, while its themes are amplified through specially commissioned Chinese characters that pay homage to the works of celebrated Chinese director Wong Kar Wai.

This beautifully illustrated book about a Shark is the first in the series of Liam Shark Boy's adventures. The pictures of fish and the ocean animals teach curious children about the habits of the sea animals in a fun way.Brian ReadHealthy Mum's Magazine 5-star rating30/10/19Liam Shark BoyReview by Brian R. on 30 Oct 2019Book Style: Toddler and Kids Story bookReading Level: 3 (Reading Alone due to: Length of book and some descriptive vocabulary)Reading Length: 10-15 minutes (FYI - we never account for toddler questions) Illustration: Fun, cartoonish, cuteAge Target: 1-8 Years of AgeWhen reviewing this book, I was concerned about the sheer length of the story. However, as I got into the story, I found that the author had presented the story in beautifully constructed stand-alone segments. Those segments make it incredibly easy to read this book with a toddler, as it's just like a new story (with the same characters) every couple of pages. What's more, the book appears long (with 48 pages), but the font is large, and the illustrations provide interesting pauses for the young reader. What you're left with is a book that's really well written for toddlers and children alike. Brian Read - Children's BooksThere are several things to be impressed with in Liam Shark Boy. One of my favorite things about the book was the fact that...it was filled with facts There are easy 2-3 facts per page that I, as a parent, learned during the story. What's more, I know my child was learning 5-6 things per page and enjoying the in-depth knowledge he was gaining about the ocean and sea life in general. Another thing that I loved about the book was just how specific everything was. For example, it wasn't just a boat that Liam went on with his father. No, it was a Kingfisher Offshore boat. We weren't just talking about a Porcupine Puffer Fish (and his family), we were talking about Pufferbee and Pufferbee's grandfather, Grandpuff. It's this specificity that really helps with retention in toddlers, and I loved how this story was so intentional in its inclusion of specifics. I think it's obvious from my review (above) that I really enjoyed Liam Shark Boy. Not only that, but my little boy enjoyed it just as much as I did, and isn't that what's important? He loved the magical story, the fact that Liam had super powers, and he loved all of the facts about the oceans and sea life. What's more, the story has been awarded a 2016 eLit Award in the Children's Books section, which should tell you all you need to know.

Gillick is renowned for his brightly coloured Plexiglas and aluminium installations that mediate the visual languages of architecture, design and sculpture. The Wood Way is a sequence of propositions about the built world and the political ethics surrounding it. The structures refer to an evolving urban landscape, which is subject to negotiation, renovation and a continual state of change. The exhibition title is derived from the German word 'Holzweg' and refers to deliberately or mistakenly taking the wrong route and ending up in the woods. In the context of the exhibition this literally refers to the complex system of exposed wooden panels in which the work is situated and reflects the duality of Gillick's scepticism and excitement for the built environment and how we operate within it. [Born in 1964, Gillick studied at Goldsmith's College and progressed to exhibitions across Europe and the USA. As a writer and curator, Gillick has collaborated with artists, writers, architects and designers. Recent UK projects include a commission for Tate Britain and a solo exhibition at the Arnolfini in 2000. He currently lives in London and New York.]
