Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is a new, interdisciplinary branch of science that combines knowledge from numerous scientific fields including biology, biochemistry, physics, chemistry, applied engineering, and medicine. It aims to restore damaged parts of the human body by rebuilding them in vitro using individual building blocks of biological tissues such as cells and the extracellular matrix that surrounds them. The authors hope to spark students’ interest in this exciting new field of science as well as give them a basic knowledge of its terminology. This book is based on a hands-on practical course in tissue engineering conducted by the Fulbright US Scholar recipient, Dr. Narine Sarvazyan (George Washington University, Washington USA). It provides an overview of the core topics of the tissue engineering field, including stem cell differentiation, the role of extracellular matrix and attachment proteins, scaffolds, and culturing of engineered tissues. Each chapter is accompanied by hands-on demonstrations and self-check questions. The text is easily readable for students of all backgrounds and the described protocols can be conducted using common lab equipment. This textbook is also useful for developing undergraduate and graduate courses that teach basic methods and approaches in this promising and rapidly developing field.

The management of periodontal defects, including destruction of the periodontal ligament, cementum and the formation of intrabony defects, has always been a challenge in clinical periodontics. During the 1950's and into the 60's, resective surgical therapy, with or without osseous recontouring, was considered the norm, in the belief that attainment of shallow pocket depths was a worthwhile goal. Surgeries are always traumatic for patients and thus there is always a look out for treatment modality that may suffice the needs without any invasive procedure. In this look out has emerged the periodontal regenerative concept. Hereby thus presenting a detailed elaboration on the concept, the trends and the scope.

Tissue Engineering can be defined as " a combination of the principles and methods of life sciences with that of engineering, to develop materials and methods to repair damaged or diseased tissues, and to create entire tissue replacements" The early practice of medicine relied largely on palliative management of pain and distress. As science contributed to this art, pharmaceutical approaches to change the body's physiology, vaccines to prevent communicable diseases, or surgery to remove diseased parts, became and largely remain the standard medical therapies. Until more recently, most scientists and clinicians believed that damaged or diseased human tissue could only be replaced by donor or with totally artificial parts. Tissue engineering promises a more advanced approach in which organs or tissues can be repaired, replaced or regenerated for more targeted solutions.

The current treatment approach in the biomedical field for injured or damaged organs and tissues is represented by organ or tissue transplantation. Various limitations such as immune reactions, high risks of disease transmission and infections, availability, donor-site morbidity, and even organ rejection, were reported over the years. Novel strategies were developed in order to overcome the drawbacks of classical treatments and improve the organ/tissue restoration and healing.Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field that aims to deliver organ and tissue substitutes by combining principles from different scientific areas such as engineering, material, and life sciences. Therefore, three key factors are of great importance in tissue engineering: the synthesis techniques, the properties of the biomaterials used for the scaffold fabrication, and the cell types used for scaffold seeding. This book, entitled "Tissue engineering", aims to provide information about cells, biomaterials, and fabrication techniques used for the development of innovative scaffolds, with optimized properties for biomedical applications, and organ-on-a-chip applications.

Tissue engineering has become the new frontier in dentistry. A past frontier was the introduction of amalgam restorative materials in the 1830s.As an interdisciplinary endeavor, tissue engineering brings the power of modern biological, chemical and physical science to real clinical problems. The impact of tissue engineering likely will be most significant with mineralized tissues, already the focus of substantial research efforts. These efforts will yield numerous clinical dental benefits, including improved treatments for intraosseous periodontal defects, enhanced maxillary and mandibular grafting procedures, perhaps more biological methods to repair teeth after carious damage and possibly even regrowing lost teeth. Present controversy surrounding tissue engineering related regenerative dentistry is not a bad thing, because it increases scrutiny of its safety, and helps educate the public and profession on its effectiveness and potential disadvantages.

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has gained widespread recognition for its applications in tissue engineering, art, and architectural modeling. The focus on 3D printing in tissue engineering is growing among researchers due to its ability to manufacture highly accurate and personalized scaffolds rapidly. Scaffolds, crucial for tissue regeneration and repair in regenerative medicine, are crafted from various materials such as natural, synthetic, and copolymer polymers. These scaffolds provide a supportive structure for cell nurturing and differentiation, facilitating the regeneration of damaged tissues or organs. This paper comprehensively explores scaffold materials, fabrication methods, and the role of 3D printing in tissue engineering applications, emphasizing the crucial interplay between material properties, scaffold architecture, and the specific requirements of the target tissue for successful regeneration and integration of functional tissue constructs.
