Philippe Albert Stapfer (1766-1840) fut ministre des sciences et des arts de la R publique Helv tique, puis il repr senta la Suisse Paris avant de former en France un cercle d'intellectuels et d' crivains. La biographie d crit la formation du grand savant suisse et de l'homme d'Etat de 1766 1798. Issu d'une c l bre famille de pasteurs de Brugg dans la partie argovienne de l'ancienne R publique de Berne, Stapfer naquit et grandit dans la capitale et il fut fid le la tradition familiale dans le choix de sa profession. Ses tudes et voyages l' tranger le pr par rent l'ordination et le mirent en relation avec des savants de premier plan et au contact des bouleversements politiques contemporains. Jusqu' la R volution helv tique il a enseign comme philologue l'Institut politique et comme th ologien l'Acad mie de Berne. Le Directoire helv tique l'appela en mai 1798 au poste de ministre de la culture.
