Dogs are tops--35 percent of Canadian households include at least one canine--and anyone who's been owned by one (yes, that's right) will tell you why: we share in each other's joy and pain; they cheer us up when we're blue; they strive to please us and are indispensable workers, serving us even at their peril; we pamper and play with them, train them and take them for walks (actually, they take us); they sleep in our beds; sit on our laps; and if we let them they will follow us to the ends of the earth. But do we really know what they think? This collection is for anyone who has ever wondered what constitutes "dog breath" to a dog, the real reason why dogs hate doggie coats, or why they replaced woolly mammoths as man's best friend. The answer to the last question is that dogs shed slightly less. But for other profound, hilarious and sometimes poignant observations, like why dogs shouldn't open restaurants, or what would happen if a dog actually caught a car, readers need look no further than Tails Don't Lie--the best of Adrian Raeside's dog cartoons.

This Picture Doesn't Hang Straight
Johannes Emmerich and his examination team with the New York District of the renowned and respected central bank of the United States have uncovered a plot to destroy the original supervisory purpose of the Federal Reserve System. A routine examination of the New York branch of a large German private bank brought to light this conspiracy. The perpetrators are members of a corrupt corporate cabal that seek to dismantle the enforcement powers of regulatory authorities for the finance, agriculture, and pharmaceutical segments of the global economy to pursue their own strategic interests. The cabal's radical agenda also seeks to further demean the team's integrity with God. The attempt by their superiors, who must offset reputational risk, to hide the controversial examination report from the rating agencies and the board of governors of Washington, DC, was also discovered by the team. The team became fugitives to escape the assassination plans of Alistair O'Bannon, executive vice president, and his wealthy Brazilian wife, Rosa. As soldiers in the army of the Lord, they would never quit their struggle for the truth.

Robots Won't Save Japan

Robots Won't Save Japan

James Adrian Wright

Robots Won't Save Japan addresses the Japanese government's efforts to develop care robots in response to the challenges of an aging population, rising demand for eldercare, and a critical shortage of care workers. Drawing on ethnographic research at key sites of Japanese robot development and implementation, James Wright reveals how such devices are likely to transform the practices, organization, meanings, and ethics of caregiving if implemented at scale. This new form of techno-welfare state that Japan is prototyping involves a reconfiguration of care that deskills and devalues care work and reduces opportunities for human social interaction and relationship building. Moreover, contrary to expectations that care robots will save labor and reduce health care expenditures, robots cost more money and require additional human labor to tend to the machines. As Wright shows, robots alone will not rescue Japan from its care crisis. The attempts to implement robot care instead point to the importance of looking beyond such techno-fixes to consider how to support rather than undermine the human times, spaces, and relationships necessary for sustainably cultivating good care.
