Migration and Colonization in Human Microevolution

Migration and Colonization in Human Microevolution

Alan G. Fix

Cambridge University Press
2005
pokkari
Migration and colonization are major forces affecting the frequency, spatial pattern and spread of genes in human populations. Here, Alan Fix reviews theories of migration developed by biologists and social scientists and surveys patterns of migration in a diverse sample of human populations. Using these empirical studies, he evaluates models of migration developed by population geneticists and explores more realistic models using computer simulation. He then shows the relevance of studies of migration as a microevolutionary process to the understanding of longer term global patterns of human diversification, by examining the spread of anatomically modern Homo sapiens, the demic diffusion of agriculture in Europe, and the origins of human diversity in the Malayan Peninsula. By focusing on migration as a process rather than as its genetic consequences, the book provides a bridge between biological and social science studies of migration, genetic microevolutionary theory and longer term human evolution.

Unleashing Human Energy: From a Toxic Culture to a High Energy, High Performance Organization
Organizations of all types have been plagued by low productivity and poor engagement of workers. At a time when international competition is strong, and hiring and retaining workers is a challenge, companies need to invest in creating a positive culture if they are to remain economically viable. In "Unleashing Human Energy Through Culture Change" authors Donald Rust and Alan Weinstein recount the story of how General Motors' largest engine plant moved from being on the brink of being shut down, to becoming the top-producing engine plant within the GM organization. Decades later, the plant remains one of the company's most productive facilities. Don Rust's values-fostered growing up on an Upper-Midwest farm-led him to challenge the way workers were treated at the company's Tonawanda, New York, engine plant. As plant manager, he became the change agent who energized both management and workers to partner, leading to positive and profitable culture changes-no small feat given the animosity that existed between managers and union workers. Using Rust's experiences as a benchmark, the authors identify the reasons for poor performance at any organization, not just those in the manufacturing sector: -industrial warfare (employee/management conflict) -industrial depression (employee disengagement) -bully management -overemphasis on short term profits -lack of job security -dull and uninspiring work and working conditions "Unleashing Energy Through Culture Change" is a practical guide to culture change based on a set of three core values: -faith that workers want to be productive -trust between workers and management -respect for all employees The book shows readers how they can bring real, transformational change to their own organizations. "Alan and Don have cut though theory and conjecture to communicate a real-world guide for executives to address the challenges of changing a culture head on. This is a must read for leaders who find themselves handicapped by unproductive culture" -Sam Reese, Chief Executive Officer, Vistage International "Your culture activates your people; your people drive your success. Alan and Don use a real-world manufacturing environment to teach us how to develop and use a positive employee-focused workplace culture to unleash employees' energy, activate their engagement, and amplify their performance. They demonstrate how caring, connection, and communication can change even the toughest workplaces into high-performing successes. This is practical wisdom that will benefit every organization and should be the focus of business leaders everywhere." -Jay Forte, MBA, CPC, ELI-MP, Executive Coach, Author, Consultant and President of The Forte Factor "While the story Rust and Weinstein share is about the auto industry and GM in particular, it's a far more universal story than that. It's a story that shows the very real impact-on people, on productivity, and on profits-of creating a positive workplace culture. It's a story that more leaders need to know." -David Friedman, CEO of High Performing Culture, and author of "Fundamentally Different" and "Culture by Design

As Christ Submits to the Church

As Christ Submits to the Church

Alan G. Padgett

What does the Bible really say about gender, the ethics of submission, and male-female roles? In this book, well-regarded theologian Alan Padgett offers a fresh approach to the debate. Through his careful interpretation of Paul's letters and broader New Testament teaching, the author shows how Christ's submission to the church models an appropriate understanding of gender roles and servant leadership. As Christ submits to the church, so all Christians must submit to, serve, and care for one another. Padgett articulates a creative approach to mutual submission and explores its practical outworking in the church today, providing biblical and ethical affirmation for equality in leadership.
Science and the Study of God

Science and the Study of God

pokkari
Religion and science today are often seen as enemies battling for human hearts and minds. In this new book Alan Padgett takes a postmodern turn, arguing that they can and should work together collegially, developing a worldview that is at once spiritually meaningful and scientifically sound. Pursuing a perspective that he calls the mutuality model, Padgett highlights the contributions that both religion and science make to a full understanding of the world and our place in it. He argues convincingly that the natural sciences and theology, even though they have their own domain as disciplines, can rationally influence each other without giving up their distinctive methods. The book explores the nature of informal reason and worldviews, the character of theology as a spiritual and academic discipline, and the question of what counts as natural science. Along the way, Padgett discusses such topics as thermodynamics, time, resurrection, and the historical Jesus to illustrate his powerful mutuality model.

Starring the Text: The Place of Rhetoric in Science Studies firmly establishes the rhetorical analysis of science as a respected field of study. Alan G. Gross, one of rhetoric's foremost authorities, summarizes the state of the field and demonstrates the role of rhetorical analysis in the sciences. He documents the limits of such analyses with examples from biology and physics, explores their range of application, and sheds light on the tangled relationships between science and society. In this deep revision of his important Rhetoric of Science, Gross examines how rhetorical analyses have a wide range of application, effectively exploring the generation, spread, certification, and closure that characterize scientific knowledge. Gross anchors his position in philosophical rather than in rhetorical arguments and maintains there is rhetorical criticism from which the sciences cannot be excluded. Gross employs a variety of case studies and examples to assess the limits of the rhetorical analysis of science. For example, in examining avian taxonomy, he demonstrates that both taxonomical and evolutionary species are the product of rhetorical interactions. A review of Newton's two formulations of optical research illustrates that their only significant difference is rhetorical, a difference in patterns of style, arrangement, and argument. Gross also explores the range of rhetorical analysis in his consideration of the ""evolution of evolution"" of Darwin's notebooks. In his analysis of science and society, he explains the limits of citizen action in executive, judicial, and legislative democratic realms in the struggle to prevent, ameliorate, and provide adequate compensation for occupational disease. By using philosophical, historical, and psychological perspectives, Gross concludes, rhetorical analysis can also supplement other viewpoints in resolving intellectual problems. ""Starring the Text"", which includes fourteen illustrations, is an up-to-date, readable study geared to rhetoricians, historians, philosophers, and sociologists interested in science. The volume effectively demonstrates that the rhetoric of science is a natural extension of rhetorical theory and criticism.

This accessible book examines the philosophical foundations of Chaim Perelman's rhetorical theory. In addition to offering a brief biography, it explores Perelman's deep philosophical commitments and his concern for the ways in which the details of actual texts realize those commitments. The authors show that Perelman still reigns supreme when it comes to the elucidation of actual texts. His is a micro-analysis of arguments, one that is endlessly suggestive of ways of analyzing texts at the level of the word and phrase, the arrangement of parts, and the structure of arguments.
Ceramic Technology and Processing

Ceramic Technology and Processing

Perfect for the new technician or engineer entering the ceramics industry as well as for the ""old hand"" who needs an update on some aspect of ceramics processing, this resource provides practical laboratory-oriented answers to such typical processing problems as particle segregation, agglomeration, contamination, pressure gradients, adherence to tooling, and temperature gradients during drying and firing. The author examines the difficulties of practical testing and processing in the ceramic laboratory, such as vast differences in scale and equipment, and shows how to evaluate results taking such variables into account. Once the laboratory work is satisfactorily completed, the rest of the book explores serious issues involved in transferring technology from the lab bench to the plant floor and then to the customer. The author gives advice on dealing with real-life problems such as allocating human and capital resources and overcoming customer wariness of being first to try new procedures and processes. Each section contains practical, hands-on suggestions on performing and sometimes avoiding certain tasks, bringing to the reader key information that is at best sparsely available in the industry. As the author states, ""Laboratory skills are gained by hands-on experience. The intent of this book is to accelerate the process.""

Ebb Tide in the British Maritime Industries

Ebb Tide in the British Maritime Industries

Alan G. Jamieson

University of Exeter Press
2002
sidottu
This book examines how the principal British maritime industries - shipping, shipbuilding and ports - adapted, or failed to adapt, to a changing world in the period 1918 to 1990, and discusses their reactions to the great opportunities seemingly offered by offshore oil and gas from the mid-1960s. At the outbreak of World War I, Britain's maritime industries still dominated the world. The British merchant fleet was by far the largest in the world, the nation's shipbuilding output eclipsed all rivals, and British ports were busy and expanding. By 1990, British shipping was a shadow of its former self, shipbuilding seemed on the verge of total collapse, and although the ports had been modernised, trade was concentrated at only a few of them. For almost four centuries, these industries had been of vital importance to Britain's wealth and power, but by 1990, politicians scarcely gave them a second thought.
Water Pollution and Fish Physiology

Water Pollution and Fish Physiology

Alan G. Heath

CRC Press Inc
1995
sidottu
This book provides a concise synthesis of how toxic chemical pollutants affect physiological processes in teleost fish. This Second Edition of the well-received Water Pollution and Fish Physiology has been completely updated, and chapters have been added on immunology and acid toxicity. The emphasis, as in the first edition, is on understanding mechanisms of sublethal effects on fish and their responses to these environmental stressors. The first chapter covers the basic principles involved in understanding how fish respond, in general, to environmental alterations. Each subsequent chapter is devoted to a particular organ system or physiological function and begins with a short overview of normal physiology of that system/function. This is followed by a review of how various toxic chemicals may alter normal conditions in fish. Chapters covering environmental hypoxia, behavior, cellular enzymes, and acid toxicity are also included. The book closes with a discussion on the practical application of physiological and biochemical measurements of fish in water pollution control in research and regulatory settings.

The quantity and variety of local history resources available on the internet continues to increase exponentially, and these resources are now not only very valuable as research tools but for much local history work have become simply essential. This booklet identifies 1000 websites which are potentially of major value and great interest to local historians in Britain-some 430 of these being newly included in this edition. It is of course selective-no listing of this sort could possibly be anything else-and it will unavoidably be outdated quite quickly, as addresses change and sites are closed. However, regular updates will be made. Indeed, for this edition over 210 previous entries have been deleted, mostly because the websites no longer function satisfactorily, or they are untraceable and presumed deleted, or they have been absorbed into a different website. Every site has been checked online and website addresses have been updated as required.
The Idea-Driven Organization

The Idea-Driven Organization

Most companies, if they solicit employee ideas at all, essentially just set up a suggestion box, which employees know from experience is where ideas go to die. So nothing happens. But innovation is not an option - it's the key to survival. And innovation needs new ideas. So where are those ideas going to come from? Using numerous examples, Robinson and Schroeder argue that the employees who interact directly with your customers, make your products, and provide your services are in the best position to see where problems exist and what improvements and new offerings would have the most impact. Robinson and Schroeder explain how leaders can build the kind of idea - driven company capable of implementing fifty to a hundred or more ideas per employee per year. Drawing on their work with companies worldwide, they show what's needed to put together a management team open to grassroots innovation and describe the strategies, policies, and practices that encourage - and those that discourage - employee ideas. They detail exactly how high - performing idea processes work and how to design one customized for your organization - including advice for teaching people how to come up with new ideas. The best ideas may come from the bottom, but they have to be systematically solicited from the top.
