Shelley's Italian Experience

Shelley's Italian Experience

Alan M. Weinberg

Palgrave Macmillan
1991
sidottu
Focusing on Shelley's 'Italian experience', the present study both addresses itself to the living context which nurtured Shelley's creativity, and explores a neglected but essential component of his work. The poet's four years of self-exile in Italy (1818-1822) were, in fact, the most decisive of his career. As he responded to Italy, his poetry acquired a new subtlety and complexity of vision. Endowed with remarkably keen powers of absorption, the poet imaginatively reshaped the rich cultural heritage of Italy and the vital qualities of its landscape and climate.

Introduction to Statistical Limit Theory
Helping students develop a good understanding of asymptotic theory, Introduction to Statistical Limit Theory provides a thorough yet accessible treatment of common modes of convergence and their related tools used in statistics. It also discusses how the results can be applied to several common areas in the field. The author explains as much of the background material as possible and offers a comprehensive account of the modes of convergence of random variables, distributions, and moments, establishing a firm foundation for the applications that appear later in the book. The text includes detailed proofs that follow a logical progression of the central inferences of each result. It also presents in-depth explanations of the results and identifies important tools and techniques. Through numerous illustrative examples, the book shows how asymptotic theory offers deep insight into statistical problems, such as confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, and estimation. With an array of exercises and experiments in each chapter, this classroom-tested book gives students the mathematical foundation needed to understand asymptotic theory. It covers the necessary introductory material as well as modern statistical applications, exploring how the underlying mathematical and statistical theories work together.
Observed Confidence Levels

Observed Confidence Levels

Alan M. Polansky

CRC Press

Illustrating a simple, novel method for solving an array of statistical problems, Observed Confidence Levels: Theory and Application describes the basic development of observed confidence levels, a methodology that can be applied to a variety of common multiple testing problems in statistical inference. It focuses on the modern nonparametric framework of bootstrap-based estimates, allowing for substantial theoretical development and for relatively simple solutions to numerous interesting problems. After an introduction, the book develops the theory and application of observed confidence levels for general scalar parameters, vector parameters, and linear models. It then examines nonparametric problems often associated with smoothing methods, including nonparametric density estimation and regression. The author also describes applications in generalized linear models, classical nonparametric statistics, multivariate analysis, and survival analysis as well as compares the method of observed confidence levels to hypothesis testing, multiple comparisons, and Bayesian posterior probabilities. In addition, the appendix presents some background material on the asymptotic expansion theory used in the book. Helping you choose the most reliable method for a variety of problems, this book shows how observed confidence levels provide useful information on the relative truth of hypotheses in multiple testing problems.
The Neglected Shelley

The Neglected Shelley

Alan M. Weinberg; Timothy Webb

Routledge

nidottu
New editions and facsimiles of Percy Bysshe Shelley's works are changing the landscape of Shelley studies by making complete compositions and fragments that have received only limited critical attention readily available to scholars. Building on the work begun in Weinberg and Webb's 2009 volume, The Unfamiliar Shelley, The Neglected Shelley sheds light on the breadth and depth of Shelley's oeuvre, including the poet's earliest work, written when he was not yet twenty and was experimenting with gothic romances, and other striking forms of literary expression, such as two collections of provocative verse. There are discussions of Shelley's collaboration with Mary Shelley in the composition of Frankenstein, and his skill as a translator of Greek poetry and drama, reflecting his urgent concern with Greek culture. His contributions to prose are the focus of essays on his letters, the subversive notes to Queen Mab, and his complex engagement with Jewish culture. Shelley's considerable corpus of fragments is well-represented in contributions on the later narrative fiction, 'Athanase'/'Prince Athanase', and the significant group of unfinished poems, including 'Mazenghi', 'Fiordispina', 'Ginevra' and 'The Boat on the Serchio', that treat Italian topics. Finally, there are explorations of subtle though neglected or underestimated works such as Rosalind and Helen, The Sensitive-Plant, and the verse-drama Hellas. The Neglected Shelley shows that even the poet's apparently slighter works are important in their own right and are richly instructive as expressions of Shelley's developing art of composition and the diverse interests he pursued throughout his career.
Numerical Methods for Laplace Transform Inversion

Numerical Methods for Laplace Transform Inversion

Alan M. Cohen

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2007
sidottu
Operational methods have been used for over a century to solve problems such as ordinary and partial differential equations. When solving such problems, in many cases it is fairly easy to obtain the Laplace transform, while it is very demanding to determine the inverse Laplace transform that is the solution of a given problem. Sometimes, after some difficult contour integration, we may find that a series solution results, but this may be quite difficult to evaluate in order to get an answer at a particular time value. The advent of computers has given an impetus to developing numerical methods for the determination of the inverse Laplace transform. This book gives background material on the theory of Laplace transforms, together with a fairly comprehensive list of methods that are available at the current time. Computer programs are included for those methods that perform consistently well on a wide range of Laplace transforms.

Miletos, on the coast of Asia Minor, was one of the most important Greek cities – a key economic power as well as a centre of philosophy and learning. Yet with historical sources scarce, and the mass of archaeological work done in over a century of excavations not published in English, studying the city has not always been straightforward. Alan Greaves provides a survey of the origins and development of this crucial city from prehistory to its medieval decline. He examines Miletos’ famous archaic period, when it was at its most prosperous and influential, through an exploration of its landscape and its earliest origins. Archaeological evidence is accessibly presented throughout, and useful case-studies explore a wide range of issues including Miletos in the Bronze Age, Miletos’ archaic period colonisation, its economy, and the city as a centre of philosophy and learning. The text challenges past assumptions about the site and its archaeology, brought update date in this new edition. It develops the two key themes that run throughout the city’s history - its relationship to its landscape, and its role as a bridging point for cultural interaction between the Aegean, Anatolia, the Near East and the Black Sea. With fifty photographs, plans and drawings, and with an updated and expanded text and bibliography, this study is the essential guide to a major city of the ancient world.
The Case for Peace

The Case for Peace

Alan M. Dershowitz

John Wiley Sons Ltd
2006
nidottu
In The Case for Peace, Dershowitz identifies twelve geopolitical barriers to peace between Israel and Palestine-and explains how to move around them and push the process forward. From the division of Jerusalem and Israeli counterterrorism measures to the security fence and the Iranian nuclear threat, his analyses are clear-headed, well-argued, and sure to be controversial. According to Dershowitz, achieving a lasting peace will require more than tough-minded negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. In academia, Europe, the UN, and the Arab world, Israel-bashing and anti-Semitism have reached new heights, despite the recent Israeli-Palestinian movement toward peace. Surveying this outpouring of vilification, Dershowitz deconstructs the smear tactics used by Israel-haters and shows how this kind of anti-Israel McCarthyism is aimed at scuttling any real chance of peace.

Disaster Planning and Recovery

Disaster Planning and Recovery

Alan M. Levitt

John Wiley Sons Inc

sidottu
"The focus of this guide is to assist you in planning for all the vital factors and imperative considerations essential in enhancing the likelihood of your organization's continuity and survival when impacted by an out-of-course event: planning to prevent disasters, planning to reduce the likelihood of disasters, planning to deal with disasters, and planning to recover after a disaster has affected the organization." — Alan M. Levitt The only complete, hands-on guide to disaster planning, Disaster Planning and Recovery provides proven strategies, tools, and techniques for helping your company plan for, cope with, and recover from cataclysmic events. Internationally recognized business continuity expert Alan M. Levitt tells you what you need to know to avoid having natural and man-made disasters become business disasters. You'll find out how to: *Create an effective plan in advance *Reduce the likelihood of disasters *Maintain functioning when disaster strikes *Mobilize staff safely and efficiently during an emergency *Reduce costs of and recovery time following an out-of-course event *Work effectively with key departments, including IT, HR, maintenance *Minimize stress on staff members *And much more Earthquakes, floods, fires, tornadoes . . . there isn't much you can do to stop them from happening, but there are steps you can take to prevent natural and man-made disasters from turning into business disasters. And that is what this book is all about: minimizing the damage done to your business by cataclysmic external events. The only complete, practical guide of its kind, Disaster Planning and Recovery shows facility professionals how to prepare for, cope with, and rebound from a disaster. Alan Levitt clearly demonstrates that the first major step toward minimizing risk and optimizing recovery time following an emergency is to formulate a comprehensive disaster plan. Drawing upon his years of experience as a business continuity expert—and using fascinating and instructive vignettes and case studies (many of them previously unpublished) to illustrate his points—he shows you how to develop the most cost-effective plan possible. Rather than offer a set of one-size-fits-all checklists and procedures, Levitt supplies a rational framework and proven strategies for formulating a plan tailored to your business. He shows you how to set reasonable goals that will allow you to react more quickly and effectively without losing sight of business outcomes. And he provides the means for researching and conducting the five phases of a comprehensive disaster/recovery plan: identifying potential disasters; quantifying the risk of occurrence; establishing parameters for reducing that risk; forecasting the potential impact a disaster can have on personnel, plant, and business processes; and establishing systems for counterbalancing those impacts. Throughout Disaster Planning and Recovery, the emphasis is on human factors. Levitt describes techniques for efficiently mobilizing staff in an emergency, working effectively with key departments, such as IT, and most importantly, easing the stress that disasters can impose on staff members. Disaster Planning and Recovery is an indispensable resource for facility professionals, human resources managers, building owners and managers, architects, designers, and planners.

Russia's Last Capitalists

Russia's Last Capitalists

Alan M. Ball

University of California Press
1990
pokkari
In 1921 Lenin surprised foreign observers and many in his own Party, by calling for the legalization of private trade and manufacturing. Within a matter of months, this New Economic Policy (NEP) spawned many thousands of private entrepreneurs, dubbed Nepmen. After delineating this political background, Alan Ball turns his attention to the Nepmen themselves, examining where they came from, how they fared in competition with the socialist sector of the economy, their importance in the Soviet economy, and the consequences of their "liquidation" at the end of the 1920s. Alan Ball's history of this experiment with capitalism is strikingly relevant to current efforts toward economic reform in the USSR.

And Now My Soul Is Hardened

Alan M. Ball

University of California Press
1996

Warfare, epidemics, and famine left millions of Soviet children homeless during the 1920s. Many became beggars, prostitutes, and thieves, and were denizens of both secluded underworld haunts and bustling train stations. Alan Ball's study of these abandoned children examines their lives and the strategies the government used to remove them from the streets lest they threaten plans to mold a new socialist generation. The "rehabilitation" of these youths and the results years later are an important lesson in Soviet history.
