The key reference dedicated to surgery for cholesteatoma... The cholesteatoma, strictly speaking a cyst and not a cancer, nevertheless shows expansive and destructive growth patterns that may give rise to serious symptoms and consequences, including fatality, not unlike those seen for malignant neoplasms. The great challenge of therapy is to eradicate the pathologic growth while preserving hearing and other critical functions of the middle ear and petrous bone, respecting the proximity of vital neural and vascular structures, and the intricate three-dimensional relationships involved. Mario Sanna's Microsurgical Management of Middle Ear and Petrous Bone Cholesteatoma is the ultimate illustrated guide to complete management of the cholesteatoma, including assessment of the full expansion and degree of destruction caused by the growths, and short- and long-term follow-up to assess and treat for recurrence. Key FeaturesBrilliantly illustrated with diagnostic images from otoscopy and radiology, both normal and pathologicalStep-by-step description of approaches and techniques for the proceduresSpecial coverage of petrous bone cholesteatoma, which is less frequent than other forms but more difficult to diagnose and treat, with introduction and description of a new function-sparing procedure, the subtotal petrosectomy Microsurgical Management of Middle Ear and Petrous Bone Cholesteatoma extends Mario Sanna's passionate dedication to excellence in otologic teaching and training into this highly complex surgical area. Practitioners, residents, and fellows will find it indispensable.

An important aspect in the formalisation of common-sense reasoning is the construction of a model of what an agent believes the world to be like to help in her reasoning process. This model is often incomplete or inaccurate, but new information can be used to refine it. The study of techniques that achieve this in a rational way is the task of the discipline of belief revision, with which this book is concerned. There are three key elements to the book's approach. Firstly, the methodology of logic by translation. A specific instance of this is the idea of revision by translation. Revision for a foreign logic is done via its translation into a well-known logic, usually classic logic. Secondly, the technique of meta-level/object-level movement, where we bring some operation defined at the meta-level of a logic into its object level. In this book, we bring the operation of deletion to the object level. Finally, through Labelled Deductive Systems, we use the context of the revision to finetune its operation and illustrate the idea through the presentation of various algorithms. The book is suitable for researchers and postgraduates in the areas of artificial intelligence, database theory, and logic.

Dynamic information-flow control (IFC) is a principled approach to protecting the confidentiality and integrity of data in software systems. This tutorial provides a complete and homogeneous account of the latest advances in fine- and coarse-grained dynamic information-flow control security.Written for students, practitioners and researchers, the authors first introduce both fine- and coarse-grained IFC in a gentle and accessible way, laying the groundwork for subsequent chapters. They proceed to show that, contrary to common belief, the granularity of the tracking system is not a fundamental feature of IFC systems and hence does not restrict how precise or permissive dynamic IFC systems can be. To achieve this, the authors demonstrate practical examples of both Fine to Coarse-Grained and Coarse- to Fine-Grained Program Translation. This tutorial will give readers the insights required to understand, develop and implement dynamic information-flow control to improve the security of a wide variety of software systems.

Will the Russian and Jewish nations ever achieve true reconciliation? Why is there such disparity in the interpretations of Russo-Jewish history? Nobel Laureate Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn has focused on these and other thorny questions surrounding Russia's Jewish Question for the last ten years, culminating in a two-volume historical essay that is among his final literary offerings: Two Hundred Years Together. In this essay, Solzhenitsyn seeks to elucidate Judeo-Russian relations while also promoting mutual healing between the two nationalities, but the polarized reception of Solzhenitsyn's work reflects the passionate sentiments of Jews and Russians alike. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and the Modern Russo-Jewish Question puts Two Hundred Years Together within the context of anti-Semitism, nationalism, Russian literature, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's prolific, influential life. Nathan Larson argues that as a writer, political thinker, and religious voice, Solzhenitsyn symbolizes Russia's historically ambivalent relationship vis-a-vis the Jewish nation.

Alessandro Manzoni LA RIVOLUZIONE FRANCESE

-I would have gone down on my knee before him if we were allowed to worship men.- With these words Giuseppe Verdi described his first impulse upon meeting Alessandro Manzoni in Milan in June 1868. Many readers are familiar with Manzoni's great novel, "The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi)," the work that elicited Verdi's extravagant reverence for its author. Before turning to write a novel, however, Manzoni composed two plays, "The Count of Carmagnola" (1820) and "Adelchi" (1822). Both plays broke free of the constraints of the neo-classical stage, and embraced the spirit of the new Romantic drama. "Alessandro Manzoni, Two Plays" makes these tragedies available in a fresh English translation."
