There's a Disco Ball Between Us

There's a Disco Ball Between Us

Jafari Sinclaire Allen

Duke University Press
2022
pokkari
In There’s A Disco Ball Between Us, Jafari S. Allen offers a sweeping and lively ethnographic and intellectual history of what he calls “Black gay habits of mind.” In conversational and lyrical language, Allen locates this sensibility as it emerged from radical Black lesbian activism and writing during the long 1980s. He traverses multiple temporalities and locations, drawing on research and fieldwork conducted across the globe, from Nairobi, London, and Paris to Toronto, Miami, and Trinidad and Tobago. In these locations and archives, Allen traces the genealogies of Black gay politics and cultures in the visual art, poetry, film, Black feminist theory, historiography, and activism of thinkers and artists such as Audre Lorde, Marsha P. Johnson, Essex Hemphill, Colin Robinson, Marlon Riggs, Pat Parker, and Joseph Beam. Throughout, Allen renarrates Black queer history while cultivating a Black gay method of thinking and writing. In so doing, he speaks to the urgent contemporary struggles for social justice while calling on Black studies to pursue scholarship, art, and policy derived from the lived experience and fantasies of Black people throughout the world.

Allan Kaprow and Claes Oldenburg

Allan Kaprow and Claes Oldenburg

Robert E. Haywood

Yale University Press
2017
sidottu
This new interpretation of the structure and meaning of the Happenings produced by Allan Kaprow (1927–2006) and Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929) in the late 1950s and 1960s sheds light on the context, theoretical framework, and working practice unique to this groundbreaking artistic form. Drawing on extensive archival research and including never-before-published drawings by Oldenburg, Robert E. Haywood describes the dialogue – at times contentious – between these two artists about the direction of the Happenings and modern art in general. Through a comprehensive analysis of these often overlooked works, it becomes clear that the Happenings—born in the midst of Cold War tensions and an increased uneasiness with the direction society was taking—challenged the traditional definitions of art in innovative new ways and were a critical component in the development of the art of the 20th century.
Allan Kaprow, Robert Smithson, and the Limits to Art

Allan Kaprow, Robert Smithson, and the Limits to Art

Philip Ursprung

University of California Press
2013
sidottu
This innovative study of two of the most important artists of the twentieth century links the art practices of Allan Kaprow and Robert Smithson in their attempts to test the limits of art - both what it is and where it is. Ursprung provides a sophisticated yet accessible analysis, placing the two artists firmly in the art world of the 1960s as well as in the art historical discourse of the following decades. Although their practices were quite different, they both extended the studio and gallery into desert landscapes, abandoned warehouses, industrial sites, train stations, and other spaces. Ursprung bolsters his argument with substantial archival research and sociological and economic models of expansion and limits.
Flux You! Some Poems by Allan Revich
This book is a collection of poems written in several styles and forms. The poems were all written at the dawn of the 21st century and bear a distinctly postmodern sensibility. Some of the poems rhyme. Most do not. Some use language in a natural narrative manner, while other poems explore language and text as media to be experimented with. The influence of Fluxus is evident throughout. This hardcover edition contains a bonus poem not available in the soft cover edition, and has received some further editing. It is suitable for public and private library collections.

With more than 100 vintage photographs. Nothing in the history of Ft Lauderdale had greater impact in its prosperity, than the Naval Air Station (NASFL) established in 1942. Recognizing this fact, the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Historical Association can be traced to one man: Allan McElhiney a former WWII sailor who devoted much of his life to preserve a part of history. When the war ended the base closed its doors. Progress was about to eradicate the past to make way for a new Airport, but thanks to the long fight of a visionary man who saw the significance of safeguarding a bygone era, a Naval Museum was established. Flight 19 is one of the great aviation mysteries. It flew out of NASFL in 1945 to vanish into the Bermuda Triangle. In addition, a 19 year old future US President lived at NASFL as a young Ensign to train as a torpedo/bomber pilot. This is the inspirational story of one man who's commitment to the cause of preservation has encouraged many to look into our past, to safeguard our future.

The first major book about an artist of powerful significance to twentieth-century Black and American artThe artist Allan Rohan Crite (1910–2007) was a community leader, mentor, and tireless recorder of the people and places of Boston, where he lived for the better part of a century. Before the age of forty, he had exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, sold work to the important collector Duncan Phillips, and earned the respect of fellow Black artists around the country. But Crite’s decision to stay in Boston and his commitment to depicting middle class Black life and religious subjects relegated him to the margins of art histories that put the Harlem Renaissance at the center. Allan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood Liturgy, the first major book dedicated to this important artist, is a richly illustrated and wide-ranging celebration of a figure whose vast body of work deserves a much broader audience.Crite trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and became a self-described “artist-reporter,” drawing and painting vivid scenes of everyday life in Roxbury, the South End, and other Boston neighborhoods, while grappling with the ways they were transformed in the second half of the century by “urban renewal,” gentrification, and changing demographics. Working in oil, watercolor, lithography, book illustration, and beyond, he incorporated spiritual themes in his work throughout his career, blurring the secular and the sacred.Featuring essays by leading scholars of African American art, Black intellectual history, and urban studies, as well as oral histories by contemporary artists and Crite’s friends, Allan Rohan Crite reveals the radical power of Crite’s art and its profound influence on generations of artists, activists, and community leaders.Distributed for the Isabella Stewart Gardner MuseumExhibition ScheduleIsabella Stewart Gardner Museum, BostonOctober 23, 2025–January 19, 2026Boston AthenaeumOctober 15, 2025–January 24, 2026Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New JerseyFebruary 4, 2026–July 31, 2026
Allan Dwan and the Rise and Decline of the Hollywood Studios
It could be said that the career of Canadian-born film director Allan Dwan (1885-1981) began at the dawn of the American motion picture industry. Originally a scriptwriter, Dwan became a director purely by accident. Even so, his creativity and problem-solving skills propelled him to the top of his profession. He achieved success with numerous silent film performers, most spectacularly with Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Gloria Swanson, and later with such legendary stars as Shirley Temple and John Wayne. Though his star waned in the sound era, Dwan managed to survive through pluck and ingenuity. Considering himself better off without the fame he enjoyed during the silent era, he went on to do some of his best work for second-echelon studios (notably Republic Pictures' Sands of Iwo Jima) and such independent producers as Edward Small. Along the way, Dwan also found personal happiness in an unconventional manner. Rich in detail with two columns of text in each of its nearly 400 pages, and with more than 150 photographs, this book presents a thorough examination of Allan Dwan and separates myth from truth in his life and films.
