U.S. and Latin American Relations

U.S. and Latin American Relations

Gregory B. Weeks; Michael E. Allison

Cambridge University Press
2022
pokkari
The third edition of U.S. and Latin American Relations offers detailed theoretical and historical analyses essential for understanding contemporary US-Latin American relations. Utilizing four different theories (realism, liberal institutionalism, dependency, and autonomy) as a framework, the text provides a succinct history of relations from Latin American independence through the Covid-19 era before then examining critical contemporary issues such as immigration, human rights, and challenges to US hegemony. Engaging pedagogical features such as timelines, research questions, and annotated resources appear throughout the text, along with relevant excerpts from primary source documents. The third edition features a new chapter on the role of extrahemispheric actors such as China and Russia, as well as a significantly revised chapter on citizen insecurity that examines crime, drug trafficking, and climate change. Instructor resources include a test bank, lecture slides, and discussion questions.

For the Venice Biennale 2019, Benno Tempel, director of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag curated the exhibition The Measurement of Presence, in which he combines installations by Remy Jungerman with wall paintings and paintings by Iris Kensmil. The Measurement of Presence is a transnational presentation that explores traditions and the past, bringing them into contact with the present. Jungerman and Kensmil gather influences from different backgrounds. Remy Jungerman is interested in the path travelled by patterns. In his work he combines motifs from Africa, Maroon culture, and twentieth-century modernism. Iris Kensmil invites us to expand our consciousness on utopian twentieth-century avant-garde and introduces us to Black female activists and artists who have been neglected for too long. This sensitive and critical stance towards abstraction and modernism is what connects the work of Jungerman and Kensmil. In their work they combine the inspiration they draw from twentieth-century utopian abstract art - in particular Mondrian and De Stijl, the Russian avant-garde and stanley brouwn - with elements of other traditions and positions. In so doing, they size up the world. They explore how the presence and visibility of spirit and history are necessary to exist. The exhibition also interacts with the architecture of the pavilion, designed by Rietveld.

An unprecedented exploration of the relationship between art, architecture, social history, and public policy in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles in the 1960s and '70s American cities underwent seismic transformations in the 1960s and '70s, from shifting demographics and political protests to reshaping through highways and urban renewal. Amid this climate of upheaval, photographers, architects, activists, performance artists, and filmmakers turned conditions of crisis into sites for civic discourse and artistic expression. The City Lost and Found explores photographic and cinematic responses to the changing fabric of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles that contributed to a reconsideration of cities in popular media and urban policy during this period. This book raises timely questions about the role of art within the social, political, and physical landscape of cities. Featuring contributions from more than 20 noted scholars in fields including art history, urban planning, architecture, and cultural studies, this is the first publication to address an important shift in photographic, cinematic, and planning practices based on close observations of streets, neighborhoods, and seminal events in the country’s three largest cities. Over 200 illustrations bring together works by major artists and newly rediscovered projects to complete this outstanding resource on the art and architectural production during these turbulent decades. Marisa Silva-Dunbar

"Through an ingenious combination of original poetry by Silva-Dunbar, set like jewels in a crown alongside erasure, found, and remixed writing, Allison is a book not to be trifled with-an eagle-eyed, nuanced, and honest exploration of the real-life character of Allison Mack. Silva-Dunbar's powerful treatment of Mack's lived experience-from her charmed beginning to her eventual conviction-courts readers through the psychological labyrinth constructed by fallen NXIVM leader Keith Raniere. At times shattering, at other times hopeful and restorative, Silva-Dunbar's Allison guides us through this terrifying house of mirrors-shows us the subtle horrors of manipulation, coercion, perfectionism-the grisly demons that can grow in the margins of our consciousness and take over our entire existence. Allison is a must-read not only for those who grew up idolizing the bright, talented actor Allison Mack (and who might still be struggling to come to terms with what happened to her), but also for people who have condemned her, for anyone who is curious about the arabesque-like revolutions of the human mind. Allison reminds us what we can become by losing ourselves-and how close we can be to committing atrocities at any time-but Allison also asks readers to consider what we can become if we allow ourselves to heal and redefine our souls. Above all, this book humanizes with vivid, searching prose that most essential experience of living through darkness and, finally, emerging into the light."-A.E. A richly illustrated volume--and the first exhibition catalog--of the work of the artist Allison Katz, whose multilayered paintings, ceramics, and posters are both embodied and enigmatic. London-based Canadian artist Allison Katz has been exploring painting's relationship to questions of identity and expression, selfhood and voice, for more than a decade. Animated by a restless sense of humor, her works articulate what the artist has called a "genuine ambiguity." Artery--a book that situates itself somewhere between a monograph, exhibition catalog, and an artist's book--is an exploration of what is within and below, and of the infrastructural arteries that connect all of us. It is published on the occasion of Katz's first institutional exhibition in the United Kingdom, presented at Nottingham Contemporary (2021) and Camden Art Centre, London (2022). Gathering together essays from Sam Thorne, director of Nottingham Contemporary, and Martin Clark, director of Camden Art Centre, as well as a text by the artist, Artery features 50 full-color image plates of the artist's work that are supplemented by 150 reference images compiled by Katz herself.

From the New York Times bestselling author of ASYLUM comes one woman's story as she blogs - and fights back - the zombie apocalypse Allison Hewitt and her five colleagues at the Brooks and Peabody Bookstore are trapped together when the zombie outbreak hits. Allison reaches out for help through her blog, writing on her laptop and utilizing the military's emergency wireless network (SNET). It may also be her only chance to reach her mother. But as the reality of their situation sinks in, Allison's blog becomes a harrowing account of her edge-of-the-seat adventures (with some witty sarcasm thrown in) as she and her companions fight their way through ravenous zombies and sometimes even more dangerous humans. "Madeline Roux manages to answer the eternal question all of us must ask ourselves eventually: "When the zombie apocalypse comes (and it will come), how will I handle it?" For my part, I hope I manage it with as much humanity and determination as Allison. But I would like to make a request for bigger weapons."--Christine Warren, New York Times bestselling author of The Others series
