Test Talk

Test Talk

Under No Child Left Behind, nearly every teacher faces a high-stakes balancing act; managing the often incompatible responsibilities of teaching students meaningfully or preparing them for standardized tests. Through their experiences teaching at a school that struggled to meet state test standards driven by NCLB, authors Amy Greene and Glennon Melton discovered a way to raise scores without compromising their strong beliefs about good teaching and learning. Their concise and easy-to-use bookTest Talk: Integrating Test Preparation Into Reading Workshop includes lesson plans and practice passages, as well as sample questions and suggested language to use during lessons. This compelling book shows that teachers don't have to choose between best practice teaching and test preparation; effective test-taking strategies can be integrated into authentic reading instruction. The authors demonstrate how to improve performance on tests without resorting to teaching to the test,- mnemonic devices, or other gimmicks. Instead, they focus on encouraging student readers to explore tests as a specific genre containing unique language, format, and cues. Throughout the book, classroom vignettes show how seamlessly one can weave the test genre into reading workshop and connect those specialized skills to more general reading strategies. It is an invaluable resource for any teacher who struggles with how to prepare kids for tests without sacrificing real teaching and learning.

There is increasing interest among educators, policymakers, and researchers in understanding the factors that make some teachers more effective than others, particularly in light of the current focus on educational accountability at the local, state, and national levels. Thus far, only a small body of research exists, however, that links specific teacher qualifications to student achievement. The lack of research is due primarily to the scarcity of data that link student test scores to the characteristics of their teachers. Furthermore, although scholars and policymakers agree that children's early school and family experiences are pivotal, relatively little research exists on the effects of teachers on the educational outcomes of young children. This study fills a gap in the current research base on the relationship among teacher characteristics, instructional practices, and the achievement of young children through an analysis of data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class (ECLS-K). The students were assessed in reading and mathematics in both the fall and the spring of their kindergarten year, and detailed information was gathered from their parents, teachers, and school administrators. In particular, the teachers were surveyed with regard to their background qualifications and the instructional practices they use in the classroom. As a result, ECLS-K data may provide information relevant to the relationships between teacher-reported qualifications and instructional practices and student achievement during the kindergarten year.

As Maoism recedes, and especially after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, Beijing has increasingly turned to patriotic nationalism for its ideological inspiration and legitimation. Return of the Dragon begins with a discussion of the definitions, typologies, and theories of nationalism. The formation and development of the Chinese people are explored, including their myths of origins, early beginnings, the classical feudal period, and the enduring state and empire of the Middle Kingdom. The Opium War began the ?hundred years of humiliation? when dynastic China steadily deteriorated and eventually succumbed to the forces unleashed by imperialism. Western and Japanese imperialism also transformed the Chinese from a people into a nation. The ideas of early Chinese nationalists are explored, particularly those of Sun Yat-sen, whose thought stands in stark contrast to those of Mao, but shares significant similarities with the developmental nationalism of Deng Xiaoping. The last chapters of Return of the Dragon describe contemporary China's patriotic nationalism as it is represented in the writings of Chinese intellectuals, the youth, and the military. The portrait that emerges is a disquieting mix of narcissism and insecurity, wounded pride and resentment, a Darwinian worldview and an irredentist resolve to restore China to its former glory. The book concludes with an examination of the Chinese polity that remains authoritarian, as well as U.S. policy implications.

Selling Women

This book traces the social history of early modern Japan's sex trade, from its beginnings in seventeenth-century cities to its apotheosis in the nineteenth-century countryside. Drawing on legal codes, diaries, town registers, petitions, and criminal records, it describes how the work of "selling women" transformed communities across the archipelago. By focusing on the social implications of prostitutes' economic behavior, this study offers a new understanding of how and why women who work in the sex trade are marginalized. It also demonstrates how the patriarchal order of the early modern state was undermined by the emergence of the market economy, which changed the places of women in their households and the realm at large.

Since the establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) tensions concerning immigration trends and policies, which continued to escalate at the turn of the millennium resulted in revised national security policies in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. These tensions have catalyzed the three governments to rethink their political and economic agendas. While national feminist scholarship in and on these respective countries continue to predominate, since NAFTA, there has been increasing feminist inquiry in a North American regional frame. Less has been done to understand challenges of the hegemonies of nation, region, and empire in this context and to adequately understand the meaning of (im)mobility in people's lives as well as the (im)mobilities of social theories and movements like feminism. Drawing from current feminist scholarship on intimacy and political economy and using three main frameworks: Fortressing Writs/Exclusionary Rights, Mobile Bodies/Immobile Citizenships, and Bordered/Borderland Identities, a handpicked group of established and rising feminist scholars methodically examine how the production of feminist knowledge has occurred in this region. The economic, racial, gender and sexual normativities that have emerged and/or been reconstituted in neoliberal and securitized North America further reveal the depth of regional and global restructuring.

When we were young, some of the most memorial tales were the ones that we heard over the sound of a crackling campfire. We heard stories that evoked a creeping sense of unease. We shared tales that caused our blood to run cold, skin to pour with sweat, and vision to turn shadows into ghosts. The stories in this collection are designed to do just that.

The shape of your future, including your overall health, is much more a function of your choices than your genes, gender, or age. Critical decisions, executed in timely phases, lead to profound life changes. REIMAGINE charts a path to spiritual, emotional, and physical health. It addresses major themes essential to discovering your life purpose and creating your unique personal vision and action plan. This is not your typical self-help manual. Its power is blending the practical wisdom of the Old and New Testaments with knowledge derived from scientific research; both are mirrored in the inspiring stories of ordinary people achieving the extraordinary. Scripture provides the foundation and principles for addressing each area of life--often in great detail--while secondary sources such as natural science, anthropology, medicine, sociology, and psychology, examined through the lens of Scripture, add invaluable knowledge. Our search for the fullness of life, inner peace, and joy will most certainly elude us when pursued directly. Instead, they are found in wholeheartedly seeking to know, enjoy, worship, and serve God and in knowing, enjoying, and serving the special people He brings our way. It includes finding expression of our passions, interests, and talents in our work and living a lifestyle that will fortify body and brain to equip us to do everything we are called to do and love to do. This is how we reap the personal harvest that God intended.
