This is the first history of public health surveillance in the United States to span more than a century of conflict and controversy. The practice of reporting the names of those with disease to health authorities inevitably poses questions about the interplay between the imperative to control threats to the public's health and legal and ethical concerns about privacy. Authors Amy L. Fairchild, Ronald Bayer, and James Colgrove situate the tension inherent in public health surveillance in a broad social and political context and show how the changing meaning and significance of privacy have marked the politics and practice of surveillance since the end of the nineteenth century.

Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this strikingly original analysis of the complex dynamics of high-risk fields demonstrates that teamwork is more important than technical prowess in averting disasters. Thinking Through Crisis narrates critical incidents from initiation to resolution in five elegantly constructed case studies: the USS Greeneville collision, the Hillsborough football crush, the American Airlines flight 587 in-flight break-up, the Bristol Royal Infirmary pediatric fatalities and the US Airways flight 1549 Hudson River landing. Drawing on a variety of theoretical and real-world perspectives, this vivid, well-documented book provides innovative ways to understand risk management, develop new models of crisis decision making, enhance socially responsible leadership and encourage deep questioning of the behavior of individuals and groups in complex systems. Its insights will resonate with professionals in a wide range of fields and with a general audience interested in understanding crises in complex systems.

The author of Hebrews calls God 'Father' only twice in his sermon. This fact could account for scholarship's lack of attention to the familial dynamics that run throughout the letter. Peeler argues, however, that by having God articulate his identity as Father through speaking Israel's Scriptures at the very beginning and near the end of his sermon, the author sets a familial framework around his entire exhortation. The author enriches the picture of God's family by continually portraying Jesus as God's Son, the audience as God's many sons, the blessings God bestows as inheritance, and the trials God allows as pedagogy. The recurrence of the theme coalesces into a powerful ontological reality for the audience: because God is the Father of Jesus Christ, they too are the sons of God. But even more than the model of sonship, Jesus' relationship with his Father ensures that the children of God will endure the race of faith to a successful finish because they are an integral part of comprehensive inheritance promised by his Father and secured by his obedience. Because of the familial relationship between God and Jesus, the audience of Hebrews - God's children - can remain in the house of God forever.

Hebrews: An Introduction and Study Guide

Hebrews: An Introduction and Study Guide

This volume offers a compact introduction to one of the most daunting texts in the New Testament. The Letter to the Hebrews has inspired many readers with its encomium to faith, troubled others with its hard sayings on the impossibility of a second repentance, and perplexed still others with its exegetical assumptions and operations drawn from a cultural matrix that is largely alien to modern sensibilities. Long thought to be Paul, the anonymous author of Hebrews exhibits points of continuity with the apostle and other New Testament writers in the letter’s (or sermon’s) vision of life in the light of the crucified Messiah, but one also finds distinctive perspectives in such areas as Christology, eschatology, and atonement. Gray and Peeler survey the salient historical, social, and rhetorical factors to be considered in the interpretation of this document, as well as its theological, liturgical, and cultural legacy. They invite readers to enter the world of one of the boldest Christian thinkers of the first century.

PASSING the TRASH: Covering Up Educators' Sex Crimes - and How a Superintendent Was Caught after Decades of Lies
BOOK DETAILS & EXCERPTS at Book2Look biblet: https: //www.book2look.com/book/qN2QFR92AG.The book is endorsed by Professor Charol Shakeshaft, leading expert on the issue of educator abuse of students. It was declared a FINALIST (in True Crime category) by the National Indie Excellence Awards (2020).PASSING the TRASH is the true story of an American community torn apart by a sex abuse scandal involving their school Superintendent, underage girls, and teachers he supervised. A brave School Board member smelled a rat, hired a private investigator, and uncovered the Superintendent's early crime. The 30-year chronicle is brought to life through the voices of the victims, community members, and the lying seducer.A note on the book title: "Passing the trash" (a well-known phrase in the education world) refers to the corrupt practice of a school administration overlooking an educator's violation of ethical standards (often sexual in nature), failing to notify law enforcement for a proper investigation, and quietly passing the person on to an unsuspecting school system. That scenario is all too common across the U.S., but little to nothing is being done to eradicate the abuse.PASSING the TRASH chronicles a teacher's sexual abuse of his student - and the school administrators' failure to report his crime early on and banish him from education. This is also a tale of sexual exploitation of subordinates in the school workplace by the same man who became a powerful and charismatic school Superintendent. The scandal of his relationship with teachers he supervised eventually circled back to his original crime from thirty years earlier - and landed him in jail.In both cases, the school environments were sexualized, authority figures lost respect, and children were harmed. There are multiple victims in this story: First, the individuals (whether child or adult) who were seduced and sexually used by a narcissistic con artist. Then, the entire community beyond those involved in the sexual misconduct: the victims' families, the seducer's family, the school districts where he was employed, and the communities who fell for his deception. This is a case study in how a predator operates. It is a documentary history of grooming, seduction, abuse, deception, and corruption. Yet a handful of principled people acted to expose a powerful predator and bring him to justice after years of deception. The story is told in the voices of those involved, drawn from police reports, court proceedings, school system emails, School Board meetings and proclamations, and Facebook posts. The concluding chapter includes resources on the issue of educator abuse of students, plus further reading on the social-historical context of the scandal. The Kindle eBook edition has live links throughout to sources, more photos, and images of documents.Email the author, Amy Contrada: [email protected]

The New Nuns

The New Nuns

Amy L. Koehlinger

Harvard University Press

In the 1960s, a number of Catholic women religious in the United States abandoned traditional apostolic works to experiment with new and often unprecedented forms of service among non-Catholics. Amy Koehlinger explores the phenomenon of the "new nun" through close examination of one of its most visible forms--the experience of white sisters working in African-American communities. In a complex network of programs and activities Koehlinger describes as the "racial apostolate," sisters taught at African-American colleges in the South, held racial sensitivity sessions in integrating neighborhoods, and created programs for children of color in public housing projects.Engaging with issues of race and justice allowed the sisters to see themselves, their vocation, and the Church in dramatically different terms. In this book, Koehlinger captures the confusion and frustration, as well as the exuberance and delight, they experienced in their new Christian mission. Their increasing autonomy and frequent critiques of institutional misogyny shaped reforms within their institute and sharpened a post-Vatican II crisis of authority. From the Selma march to Chicago's Cabrini Green housing project, Amy Koehlinger illuminates the transformative nature of the nexus of race, religion, and gender in American society.

This volume of interviews from the popular online journal Logo, are organized around the critical and interconnected themes of the decline of politics and culture, neo-liberalism and the rise of American imperialism, the crisis in the Middle East and the need to forge alternative visions and effective modes of resistance in contemporary struggle. These interviews offer key insights and galvanizing challenges to critically thinking scholars and citizens engaged in analyzing and struggling against current injustices. Although the interviews were conducted during the presidency of George W. Bush, they are especially relevant now. These critical insights and demands should not be abandoned because of the ease and relief engendered by the election of Barack Obama. Because of the volume's concern with defending democracy against the incursions of empire, the text emphasizes the need to reinvigorate discourse and rebuild the public sphere. The primary method of accomplishing these ends, frank and honest dialogue, is built into the very structure of the text. The insights and challenges offered in the interviews are crucial for active thinkers looking to respond thoughtfully, effectively and conscientiously to the crises that shape our times.
