Arguably the most popular novelist of her day and the mother of the female Gothic literary tradition, Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) has received varying amounts of critical attention and is now being recognized for her important contribution to English literature. This volume recounts what little is known about her life and provides an extensive bibliographic overview of works by and about her. Included are annotated entries for editions and translations, reviews, critical studies of Radcliffe, and adaptations of her works. Ann Radcliffe wrote some of the most electrifying and popular novels of her day. Not only is she one of the most important Mothers of the novel, she almost singlehandedly developed the Female Gothic to explore female experience. This form has achieved almost mythical status. This volume is an indispensible guide to the life and work of this pioneering woman novelist. A biography provides new information on Radcliffe from a source that has been virtually ignored, the one substantial extant manuscript, her forty-two leaf commonplace book, which is in deteriorating condition. The remainder of the book is an extensive annotated bibliography of works by Radcliffe and critical studies of her writing. Included are entries for early and modern editions, early reviews, and bibliographic studies. Two chapters are devoted to 20th-century critical studies of Radcliffe, in response to the growing amount of material being written about her. Appendices record her artistic legacy as presented in adaptations, imitations, parodies, and abridgments; and the volume includes a list of works falsely attributed to her.

Ann Sheridan came to Hollywood in 1933 as a finalist in a beauty contest, a publicity stunt for Paramount's Search for Beauty. Of the 30 contestants who appeared in the picture and the 6 finalists whom Paramount put under contract, she was the only one to achieve stardom. Her films included Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), They Drive by Night (1940), Kings Row (1942), and Come Next Spring (1956). Through the years, she appeared on stage and on many radio and television programs. As with her film career, her broadcasting work was diverse, including appearances in dramas, comedies, talk shows, variety revues, and game shows. In 1965 she joined the cast of Another World, thus becoming one of the first movie stars to appear in a soap opera. Her role led to a prime time series, the situation comedy Pistols 'n' Petticoats (1966-1967). She died during production. This reference book chronicles Ann Sheridan's fascinating life and career. The volume begins with a biography that traces her rise to stardom and her many successes in the entertainment world. A chronology then summarizes the most important events in her life. The chapters that follow provide detailed information for her work in films, radio, and television. Entries are provided for each of her performances, with each entry giving cast and credit information, a plot summary, excerpts from reviews, and critical commentary. The book also includes information about recordings of Sheridan's songs, the various awards and honors that she won, and magazine covers on which she appeared. The volume also presents an extensive annotated bibliography of works about Sheridan and lists sources of archival material.

This collection of critical essays is the first work to examine the short stories of Ann Petry, a noted African American writer. While best known for her best-selling debut novel, The Street, the focus of this text is her equally important, but less familiar, volume of short stories Miss Muriel and Other Stories. Within Ann Petry's Short Fiction: Critical Essays, contributors from a variety of disciplines, from literary studies to philosophy, analyze and comment on stories such as Mother Africa, In Darkness and Confusion, and The Witness. Organized into three parts, the first section provides an overview of Petry's short fiction from different theoretical perspectives. In the following two segments, essays are arranged in chronological order, beginning with Petry's work from the 1940s. Contributors discuss her portrayal of characters and conflict as well as thematic threads that run through Petry's work. Taken together, these 14 essays constitute an invaluable companion to Petry's work. This illuminating collection will interest scholars of literature, history, and culture, as well as anyone interested in the fiction of Ann Petry.

Lady Ann needed to be on that wagon train. Even if it meant striking a deal with the surly, and devilishly handsome, mountain man to do it. More lives than just her own depended upon it... She was the type he swore never to fall for again...He was a complication she could ill afford...Together they will discover love is worth the risk, no matter the cost... Lady Ann Dunneroy finds herself in a desperate situation and her search for the man responsible leads her on a perilous journey to the American West. Relying solely on her wit and resourcefulness to survive, she strikes a deal with a rugged mountain man by the name of Grayson Stone. The more time Ann spends with Grayson, the less certain she is of the original mission she embarked upon. Determined to do what is right, Ann must make a difficult decision; one that may break her heart and perhaps cost her very life as well as the lives of those she loves most... Grayson Stone is the leader of the wagon train and it's his job to ensure everyone arrives safely; a duty made aggravatingly more challenging when he agrees to escort a reckless, young woman along the way. A hard man, as rugged and imposing as the mountains he calls home, Grayson wants only to live a peaceful life of solitude. But something about the tenacious Lady Ann makes him yearn for more... A story of love and loss on the Santa Fe Trail Follow the hoyden daughter of an earl, from the ballrooms of London to America's wild frontier; where she must choose between her heart and her honor. Excerpt from Ann's Valley: "Nothing has changed." Grayson's words were direct and curt. Ann stiffened, feeling her anger with him return, "I hadn't been under the impression they had." "Do not confront me again on the matter. I will not change my mind. No woman or child allowed on the trail unless accompanied by a guardian. Is that understood?" "Perfectly." She leveled him with her most imperious stare. Then added impertinently, "And do you own the trail, then?" His jaw clenched in irritable fashion, fastening her with a menacing glower, "Don't even think about following on your own." "You can't stop me."

Ann Shaw (1788-1854), the author's ancestor, was hailed by both immigrant and indigenous South Africans as their spiritual mother, the 'Mother of Methodism in South Africa'. However, all accounts of early South African history have erased her influence, including those written by her husband, Rev. William Shaw, the 'Wesley of Africa'. Had something necessitated Ann's removal from the records? With tenacious scholarship, McAlpine-Black discovers Ann's letters, her poetry, and the female threads of the lives that surrounded her-and weaves a family history into an international narrative. Ann Shaw lived at a time when women were discouraged from taking part in church ministry. Despite this, Ann journeyed from the English fens to the African Cape, becoming the most significant female catalyst for Methodism and education in South Africa. Now Methodism is its largest denomination. In addition to the challenges of women's diseases, miscarriage, childbirth, family life, and patriarchy in the early nineteenth century, Ann's story unearths the female roots of Methodism, a fresh and compelling history of South Africa, and the high cost of motherhood.
