Protocols by Invariants

Protocols by Invariants

Anneke A. Schoone

When several computers have to cooperate to achieve a certain task (i.e. distributed computing) we need ‘recipes’ (i.e. protocols) to tell them what to do. Unfortunately, human minds are not well suited to keeping track of what might happen given even a very simple protocol. In this book Dr Schoone shows how we can derive properties of those protocols that always hold (i.e. invariants), irrespective of what actually happens in an execution of the protocol. From these invariants the basic attributes of the protocols can be obtained. Each protocol is explained intuitively, proved correct using invariants, and analysed to establish the relation between parameter settings and its essential features. The protocols belong to a wide range of layers in the ISO reference model hierarchy, and include the following: a class of communication protocols that tolerate and correct message loss, duplication, and resequencing; protocols for determining and maintaining routing information, both in a static and a dynamic environment; connection-management protocols; and atomic commitment protocols for use in distributed database management.

Lives of the Anchoresses

Lives of the Anchoresses

Anneke B. Mulder-Bakker

In cities and towns across northern Europe in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a new type of religious woman took up authoritative positions in society, all the while living as public recluses in cells attached to the sides of churches. In Lives of the Anchoresses, Anneke Mulder-Bakker offers a new history of these women who chose to forsake the world but did not avoid it. Unlike nuns, anchoresses maintained their ties to society and belonged to no formal religious order. From their solitary anchorholds in very public places, they acted as teachers and counselors and, in some cases, theological innovators for parishioners who would speak to them from the street, through small openings in the walls of their cells. Available at all hours, the anchoresses were ready to care for the community's faithful whenever needed. Through careful biographical studies of five emblematic anchoresses, Mulder-Bakker reveals the details of these influential religious women. The life of the unnamed anchoress who was mother to Guibert of Nogent shows the anchoress's role as a spiritual guide in an oral culture. A study of Yvette of Huy shows the myriad possibilities open to one woman who eventually chose the life of an anchoress. The accounts of Juliana of Cornillon and Eve of St. Martin raise questions about the participation of religious women in theological discussions and their contributions to church liturgy. And the biographical study of Margaret the Lame of Magdeburg explores the anchoress's role as day-to-day religious instructor to the ordinary faithful.
Decolonising Education in Islamic West Africa

Decolonising Education in Islamic West Africa

This book uses perceptions and experiences of Qur’anic schools in West Africa to outline a much-needed postsecular approach, reconsidering the place of Islamic education within African decolonial debates about educational pluralism, and the contributions of religious perspectives in academic and international development spaces. Decolonial theory is used to overcome the challenges of problematic Eurocentric and colonialist stereotypes about religious actors and faith-based schools which persist within international education scholarship and global policy agendas. Through fine-grained ethnography, chapters discuss how parents and young people today engage with classical Qur’anic schools, Islamic schools and French-medium secular education in Senegal, thereby exposing inequalities around gender, descent-based or caste identities and socioeconomic status, as well as their influence on young people’s pursuit of knowledge. These findings are valuable for scholars exploring the development-education-religion nexus and promoting Education for All in communities characterised by other-than-secular worldviews. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students working in the sociology of education, international education, anthropology and religious education. Practitioners involved in postcolonial and decolonial debates will also benefit from recommendations regarding educational reform in plural educational contexts.

The CMY color system - with Cyan Magenta and Yellow as primary colors - is taught in fun color lessons in the form of silly counting rhymes and bold full-color illustrations. Note there are different editions for US or UK/International English spelling. There is a matching coloring book too, as well as free coloring and craft activity downloads. Also see the Kindle versions. What are the names of the primary colors? And how do we mix some of the others? Where does the color fit? And which is its opposite? Wacky friends help you count And teach what color's all about It's color fun time In number and rhyme Little characters - from one arty mouse to twelve smiling crocs - take children around the color wheel. Bear and bug rhymes further explain the colors brown and black, and additional rhymes explain shades, tints, tones, hue and the names of colors. Small children will enjoy listening to the color rhymes, early readers will enjoy reading them, and teachers and parents can refer to the color theory rhymes to explain the system to young children. Each rhyme is also repeated in a plain prose sentence. The CMY system is a good color system to teach to young children, as it is used extensively in our modern world of commercial printing, paint mixes and inks for desktop printers. Indie authors too, have had to come to grips with it The quality of color printing we enjoy today, came about with the introduction of the CMYK system. Black was added to give depth to CMY color images (it is indicated by the letter K as can be seen in print cartridges). Color theory is a fascinating part of both the art and science worlds. Famous artists, philosophers and scientists ranging from Goethe to Mansell, and Da Vinci to Newton have all grappled with the qualities of color and light. There are also two color Count and Discover Kindle versions (expanded for teachers and abridged for children) and a printed coloring book. The latter makes a perfect side-by-side pair with either the print or digital main book. There are additional gift products and teaching materials like posters, that feature the little characters in the rhymes. All make great gifts and learning aids.
