Aristotle devotes books 8-9 of the "Nicomachean Ethics" to friendship, distinguishing three kinds: a primary kind motivated by the other's character; and other kinds motivated by utility or pleasure. He takes up Plato's idea that one knows oneself better as reflected in another's eyes, as providing one of the benefits of friendship, and he also sees true friendship as modelled on true self-love. He further compares friendship with justice, and illustrates the ubiquity of friendship by referring to the way in which we help wayfarers as if they were kin (oikeion), a word he takes from Plato's discussion of love. In many of these respects he probably influenced the Stoic theory of justice as based on the natural kinship (oikeiotes) one feels initially for oneself at birth and, eventually, for lost wayfarers. Of the three commentaries translated here, that by the second-century AD Aristotelian Aspasius is the earliest extant commentary on Aristotle; the second is by Michael of Ephesus in the twelfth century; the third is of unknown date and authorship. Aspasius worries whether there is only one kind of friendship with a single definition. But he plumps for a verdict not given by Aristotle, that the primary kind of friendship serves as a focal point for defining the other two. Aspasius picks up connections with his Stoic contemporaries. Michael cites Christians and draws from Neoplatonists the idea that there is a self-aware part of the soul, and that Aristotle saw individuals as bundles of properties.

Im Jahre 1494 ging ein unbekannter, wohl aus dem Umkreis des Munchner Hofes stammender Adeliger auf Wallfahrt nach Jerusalem. Seine Reisebeschreibung erzahlt von dieser 199 Tage wahrenden Tour. Sie fuhrte den Pilger auf einer venezianischen Galeere ins Heilige Land, setzte ihn zahlreichen Gefahren aus, Seeraubern, Erdbeben und Sturmen, konfrontierte ihn auch mit fremden Menschen und ihren andersartigen Lebensformen. Vorgelegt wird erstmals die vollstandige Fassung des Reiseberichts (Handschrift der Universitatsbibliothek Giessen) in einer kommentierten Edition. Einleitende Studien thematisieren die Wallfahrt des Jahres 1494 als Teil adeliger Lebensform, beschaftigen sich mit den Fragen nach Autor und Kopist, vermitteln UEberblicke uber die politische Geschichte Sudosteuropas, und machen endlich mit der Mittelmeerschifffahrt jener Zeit vertraut.

Type 42 presents 120 works from an extraordinary archive of work by an anonymous artist. The archive is composed of black-and-white polaroids showing headshots and close-ups of actresses taken from the television screen beginning in the late 1960s. They are mainly distorted, slightly blurry and occasionally pixelated, but a strong emphasis on the science fiction or B-movie genres pervades. In some of the photographs the television screen can be seen as a framing device, but for the most part the television’s borders are absent from the picture – one of the many remarkable aesthetics of this collection.‘Type 42’ refers to the type of Polaroid film used. The entire body of work was found intact in New York in 2012 by artist Jason Brinkerhoff; his attempts to trace the origins of the polaroids have remained unsuccessful.All but a handful are inscribed. In most cases the name of the actress is written across the bottom of the photograph; in some cases the title of the film or TV series she appears in is written across the top of the photograph; and in a few cases both sets of information are written on top and bottom accordingly. There are also 31 photographs where the artist has written the women’s measurements across the top along with her name across the bottom.

The Prosopography of the Middle Byzantine Period is a comprehensive biographical dictionary for the Eastern Mediterranean, including Byzantine Italy, in the Early Middle Ages. Itis published in two sectionsand documents over 21,000 people. The first section covers the period from 641 to 867, the second extends to 1025. Apart from the main volumes, each section contains an additional introductory volume, Prolegomena, containing principally information about the most important sources for the period - both Byzantine and non-Byzantine - together with a concluding volume with the definitive list of abbreviations, the indexes, and addenda and corrigenda. The work covers firstly all Byzantines mentioned either by name or anonymously in the relevant Byzantine and non-Byzantine sources, and secondly all persons mentioned in the Byzantine sources both from Western Europe and from the Arabic and Slavonic areas, together with those from the Christian East. The articles on the individual people bring together all known details in each case and give information on the present state of research. Both sections contain comprehensive indexes of names, variants of names, offices, titles, places and geographical terms, which facilitate use of the work. A subject index and online versions of all the indexes are in preparation. Thus the Prosopography is a research instrument of use both to the specialist and to all those just looking for rapid information on individuals, a region or a particular event.

Dieser Text wurde in den neunziger Jahren durch innere Gespr che mit Jesus empfangen, wird aber erst in unserer Zeit in seiner wahren Bedeutung begriffen. Er richtet sich an fortgeschrittene bende in der Meditation, im Gebet, im Nicht-dualen Gewahrsein oder der christlichen Mystik. Er beschreibt die letzten Schritte des Sch lers vor der Erleuchtung. Der innere Durchbruch aus der Traumwelt hin zur Wirklichkeit wird hier Graduierung oder Wissen genannt. Wissen ist bereits ein Erleuchtungszustand, der uns im Alltag zur Verf gung steht, wenn wir uns nach innen wenden und dort der inneren Unendlichkeit gewahr werden. Jesus, hier Jeshuah, geht aber noch weiter, als es die nicht-duale Literatur tut. F r ihn ist es nicht genug in der Einheitsso e des kosmischen Bewusstseins zu schwimmen, wenn es keine Verbindung zum Licht hingibt. Darum spricht er im zweiten Teil dar ber, dem Strahl des inneren Leuchtturms zu folgen, wie ein Raumschiff immer auf der Linie eines Laser-Leitstrahl bleibt, um nicht vom Kurs abzukommen. Erwachen ist f r Jeshuah das immerw hrende Gespr ch mit ihm, nicht mit einer anderen Person, sondern mit jenem Teil unserer selbst, in der Einheit mit Gott und allen anderen Wesen der Sch pfung lebt. Die S tze sind manchmal lang und verschachtelt. Der bersetzer hat versucht, ohne Inhalte zu gef hrden, manche Wiederholungen und L ngen zu k rzen und den Text dadurch verst ndlicher zu machen. Dennoch braucht der Text Geduld, um verstanden zu werden. Dieses Buch wird vielleicht das schwierigste Buch sein, das du jemals lesen wirst, weil es das Ego in Frage stellt und dir Richtung und Ermutigung bez glich der einzigen M glichkeit gibt, das Ego loszuwerden. Es ist nicht darauf ausgelegt, schwierig zu sein. In der Tat wirst du die Lekt re leicht und sehr inspirierend, ja wohlschmeckend, finden. Die Worte werden nicht schwer zu verstehen sein, wohl aber die Bewegung, die du in dir in Gang setzten werden. Dieses Buch wird dich dazu bringen, ber das Verstehen hinauszugehen und von dort zu leben Es lehrt die Prinzipien von Ein Kurs In Wundern in erleichternder Einfachheit, egal ob du ein Kursstudent bist oder nicht. Es kl rt die Prinzipien der Christlichen Wissenschaft, ob du nun deren Student bist oder nicht. Es erkl rt die Prinzipien des Lebens auf eine k hne und befreiende Art und Weise, ob du dieses meidest oder nicht. Es spricht dich in Bezug auf deine G ttlichkeit an und ruft zum Aufwachen auf. Und es spricht dich in der Sprache deiner Menschlichkeit an, damit du verstehen kannst. Ich habe gesagt, dass es f nf gro e B cher der modernen Welt gibt, die sich mit der G ttlichkeit des Menschen befassen und seine Verwirklichung der Wirklichkeit - sein Erwachen - erleichtern. Das erste ist Wissenschaft und Gesundheit von Mary Baker Eddy. Das zweite ist das Urantia-Buch. Das dritte ist ein Kurs in Wundern. Das vierte ist dieses: "Gespr che mit Jesus", und das f nfte ist vielleicht noch nicht erschienen (Juli 2018). Ich mache diese Aussage, um dir Zeit zu ersparen, und nicht als Anspruch auf Gr e. In jeder Hinsicht verk rpert dieses Buch die Natur und den Charakter der letzten Stufen des Erwachens. Ob du es f r dich anwendest oder nicht, die Zeit wird kommen, wenn seine Wahrheit deine eigenen unerkl rlichen Erfahrungen des Erwachens best tigen wird und du dich dadurch weniger abgelenkt sein l sst von deiner urspr nglichen Vernunft - die bewusste Erfahrung der Sch pfung als das was Gott ist.
