The Secret Protocol

The Secret Protocol

Antonella Salomoni

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN PRESS
2026
sidottu
In 1939, the Soviet Union and Germany agreed to a nonaggression treaty known by the names of its signatories, foreign ministers Vyacheslav Molotov and Joachim von Ribbentrop. Kept hidden from the public was an addendum to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a 'secret protocol' whose existence was officially denied by the Soviet Union until 1992. It defined new borders for German and Soviet spheres of influence, effectively preparing for the partition of Poland, the Baltic states, and Bessarabia. Shortly afterward, both the USSR and Nazi Germany invaded Poland. In this volume, Antonella Salomoni scrutinizes this consequential document and its many afterlives, focusing less on its well-studied history and more on the discourse that surrounded it. From the moment of the secret protocol's inception - and the near-instantaneous rumors of its existence - it generated friction and competing narratives. The document became public during the Nuremberg trials, but the USSR declared it a fabrication evidencing the West's willingness to falsify history during the Cold War. It continues to be relevant to the reconfiguration of history being organized by Vladimir Putin. By centering the rumors, accusations, and propaganda that the pact precipitated, Salomoni illuminates how political actors can use and abuse history, how they create and disseminate truths and falsehoods, and how they can blur the boundary between truths and falsehoods even in the glaring face of black-and-white documentation.

Fused Deposition Modeling of Composite Materials

Fused Deposition Modeling of Composite Materials

ELSEVIER SCIENCE PUBLISHING CO INC

nidottu
Fused Deposition Modeling of Composite Materials is dedicated to the field of 3D-printing of composite materials using a popular technique called Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), the world’s most popular 3D printing method. But this method is currently limited to printing basic polymers and only a handful of primitive composite materials. Many future industries, such as Space, Biomed, Construction and Defense are waiting for the ability to 3D print composites and new functional materials with complex shapes and features so they can add unique and customizable features to their parts, including biocompatibility, radiation shielding, high-strength, rapid cooling, flexibility and shape-memory. The book's authors take the reader through the basics of what the FDM technique is all about and describe the advantages and new opportunities arising from 3D printing innovative materials, which include polymer-matrix composites and fully inorganic parts. They then review and discuss methods for making the different types of composite feedstock filaments needed to 3D print such materials by FDM. Finally, sections discuss the challenges that should be considered in making filaments and parts and how to go about solving them.

Franco Modigliani and Keynesian Economics
This book follows the intellectual path of Franco Modigliani, Nobel Prize winner and one of the most influential Keynesian economists of the twentieth century, tracing his development and examining the impact of his research. The book begins with Modigliani’s early work as a young law student in 1930s Italy and traces his development through his emigration to the US, his introduction to Keynes’ General Theory at the New School, and his seminal 1944 article on Keynesian and classical economics. The book also examines Modigliani’s pioneering theory of savings: the life-cycle hypothesis (with Richard Brumberg), and the Modigliani–Miller theorem, a cornerstone of modern theory of finance. The book argues that although Modigliani is placed amongst the most prominent Keynesian economists, his connections with Keynesian theory are of secondary importance until the beginning of the 1960s when he joined MIT.This is the first book to place Modigliani’s thought in its proper historical context, showing how it related to wider economic concerns and examining the social and political implications of his work. It will be of interest to scholars in the history of economic thought, and especially post-war American Keynesian economics.
Friendship in Medieval Iberia

Friendship in Medieval Iberia

Antonella Liuzzo Scorpo

Private and public relationships - frequently labelled as friendships - have always played a crucial role in human societies. Yet, over the centuries ideas and meanings of friendship transformed, adapting to the political and social climates of different periods. Changing concepts and practices of friendship characterized the intellectual, social, political and cultural panorama of medieval Europe, including that of thiteenth-century Iberia. Subject of conquests and 'Reconquest', land of convivencia, but also of political instability, as well as of secular and religious international power-struggles: the articulation of friendship within its borders is a particularly fraught subject to study. Drawing on some of the encyclopaedic vernacular masterpieces produced in the scriptorium of 'The Wise' King, Alfonso X of Castile (1252-84), this study explores the political, religious and social networks, inter-faith and gender relationships, legal definitions, as well as bonds of tutorship and companionship, which were frequently defined through the vocabulary and rhetoric of friendship. This study demonstares how the values and meanings of amicitia, often associated with classical, Roman, Visigothic and Eastern traditions, were transformed to adapt to Alfonso X’s cultural projects and political propaganda. This book contributes to the study of the history of emotions and cultural histories of the Middle Ages, while also emphasizing how Iberia was a peripheral, but still vital, ring in a chiain which linked it to the rest of Europe, while also occupying a central role in the historical and cultural developments of the Western Mediterranean.
Emerging from the Winter Sea: Selected Poetry and Prose (1998-2021) / A Bilingual Edition
A bilingual edition of the selected poems of the celebrated contemporary Italian poet Antonella Anedda. Bowl of ashes. In the emptiness that separates the rope of ferries without sails the gulf that splits the flag and calls up salt auctions of the past without-the-river you count rings in chains holding to the wharf. Emerging from the Winter Sea is a wide-ranging collection of verse that brings together poems from across Antonella Anedda's career, showcasing the full depth and breadth of one of the most celebrated Italian poets working today. The concerns of Anedda's work--family, art, history, war--are approached with a deep sense of historicism. Her Italian is fresh, evolving, tied to though straying from local dialects and the lineage of Latin; it is clear in its communicative power yet elemental in that simple language only seems so. In poems of domestic interiors, lines that succinctly capture great works of visual art, and verse describing the great destruction wrought by nations at war, Anedda emerges as a sharp poetic chronicler of history as it is lived. The effect is one of startling intimacy, and of a close acquaintance with a voice of powerful authority.

Social Reproduction

Social Reproduction

Antonella Picchio

Cambridge University Press
1992
sidottu
This book focuses on the relationship between the process of production of commodities and the process of social reproduction of the labouring population, and seeks to restore that problematic relationship to the central place it had in the analysis of Smith, Ricardo, and Marx. The argument is directly opposed to that of the wages-fund theorists, who rejected the classical view of labour as a very special type of commodity whose price (the ‘natural wage’) was determined exogenously by material, historical and institutional factors. By substituting a strict supply-and-demand mechanism they and their followers effectively removed the whole question of social reproduction from economic theory. This rendered marginal or analytically invisible certain fundamental aspects of the system, most prominently the role of the state in the process of social reproduction and women’s work of reproduction. Examination of the 1909 Poor Law report and of the women’s labour market shows that what disappeared from theory remained crucial for economic policy. In this investigation the author draws on the history of economic thought, social history, and applied economics, using the surplus definition of profit (production minus subsistence of the labouring population). The resulting perspective, centred on the relation between production and social reproduction, opens new directions for economic analysis.

The History of Florence in Painting

The History of Florence in Painting

Placed at the heart of Italy, Florence was already in the Middle Ages a centre of commerce and fine craftsmanship. Spurred on by a few powerful dynasties of merchants and financiers-above all the Medici, but also the Strozzi, the Pitti, and others-the city became the leading force in the Renaissance of the arts, literature, and science. Challenging the primacy of the Venetian Republic and even the city of the popes, Florence attained a glory that was reflected down through the later centuries of Medici rule. And Florence was all along a city of painters, who recorded its sights; the likenesses of its leaders and luminaries; its battles, civic myths, and patron saints; and, of course, the changing tastes of their Tuscan patrons. In this magnificent volume are assembled a wide variety of artworks, both familiar and rarely seen, that, interwoven with an authoritative text, illustrate the eventful history of Florence - from the age of Cimabue and Giotto, through the High Renaissance of Leonardo and Michelangelo, to the Mannerism of Vasari and Bronzino, and even to the era of modern travellers like Sargent and Degas. The History of Florence in Painting is a feast for the eyes and the intellect, and worthy companion to the previous volumes in this series, The History of Venice in Painting, The History of Paris in Painting, and The History of Rome in Painting.

This book offers an analysis of the socio-historical conditions of the rise of postwar Italian photography, considers its practices, and outlines its destiny.Antonella Russo provides an incisive examination of Neorealist photography, delineates its periodization, traces its instances and its progressive popularization and subsequent co-optation that occurred with the advent of the industrialization of photographic magazines. This volume examines the ethno(photo)graphic missions of Ernesto De Martino in the deep South of Italy, the key role played by the Neorealist writer and painter Carlo Levi as "ambassador of international photography", and the journeys of David Seymour, Henry Cartier Bresson, and Paul Strand in Neorealist Italy. The text includes an account the formation and proliferation of Italian photographic associations and their role in institutionalizing and promoting Italian photography, their link to British and other European photographic societies, and the subsequent decline of Neorealism. It also considers the inception of non-objective photography that thrived soon after the war, in concurrence with the circulation of Neorealism, thus debunking the myth identifying all Italian postwar photography with the Neorealist image. This book will be particularly useful for scholars and students in the history and theory of photography, and Italian history.

This book questions the ability of crowdfunding (especially in the lending and equity-based models) to contribute to the development of European businesses, and therefore, to the relaunch of the European economy. Following a mainly micro (firm-based) approach, the study investigates the advantages of crowd investors’ increased role both in making financial resources available to the industrial base, thus reinvigorating economic growth across the European Union. The book reframes contemporary issues surrounding corporate finance and develops relevant knowledge to help companies succeed when it comes to securing the means to grow. It provides new and interesting insights into the alternative finance market, in light of the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. The book describes the main alternative finance models which include not only lending and equity-based crowdfunding, but also marketplace lending, balance sheet lending, invoice trading, securities, real estate crowdfunding, and profit-sharing. It also analyses the due diligence process and other value-added services provided by platforms and backers. The book outlines a systematic understanding of crowdfunding as a substitute or complement to other forms of entrepreneurial finance and unpacks some of the misunderstandings surrounding the crowdfunding industry and its future evolution. The conclusions reached can be of help to entrepreneurs who have limited knowledge of the crowdfunding tool and the associated benefits. As such, this book is a valuable resource for students, researchers, professionals, and practitioners interested in discovering or better understanding the crowdfunding process, its characteristics, and the range of players in this market.
