In 1914, after three years of civil war, the Mexican government collapsed and revolutionary armies filled the streets of every city. In fear of peasant revolt, the Mexican aristocracy fled the country. Hoping to start a new life in a new land, the Vallerdas family-Rodrigo, Antonia, and their small son, Niki-set sail for California. But aboard their refugee ship, murder leads to shipwreck, and a desperate battle with the sea begins. Stranded on a desert island three hundred miles from civilization, a small group of survivors from every social class clings to a social order lost to revolution. Chameleon Moon includes poems of love, loss, awakening, and peacemaking. The first section, "Smoke and Mirrors," contains some of the poet's most personal. Though many are about the loss of loved ones, they also speak of how the dead go on living, always present in our lives. The second section, "Dawn in the Glass House," illustrates a growing awareness of oneself and one's place in the world. The speakers in these poems stumble forward, sometimes with a kind of blind faith, through bad relationships, confusion, and illogic in search of solid ground and self-understanding. It comes. As we are told in "Afternoon Rain," "A woman holds back the truth of her life as long as she's able, then spills everything, learns that she's always been insatiable." The final section, "Amends," contains poems of reconciliation and acceptance. They are about perseverance and of finding peace and comfort in a world that often cannot give us the answers we seek. A life settles into a pattern, knowledge settles into the bone. In the final poem, "Directions," the poet concludes, "If someone should ask, I can say this much: Turn anywhere, and then keep going."
Dance Craze is a diverse collection of poems, full of mischief and whimsy and ranging from irreverent to fanciful to quirky. "I was a girl with a fondness for fiction," the narrator tells us, "eager and willing to suspend disbelief." And later, "I was verbal and fertile. I skipped and skirted and circled. Put my faith in cut and run." These poems tell of romantic foibles and felicities, as well as a dead ex-husband who shows up at the door wanting to party. The narrator, who is "capable of staggering languor," says, "I'm a little beyond the bend of the river, a little up the road from put together." But she's also able to sing an ode to missteps and faux pas, and finally, to listen to her heart "like a golden oldie."

Antonia Augusta was the most powerful and influential Roman woman of her time. The daughter of Mark Antony, wife of Drusus, mother of Claudius, grandmother of Caligula and great-grandmother of Nero, she spent her entire life close to the seat of power and was a supremely important figure in Imperial Rome. Antonia Darder is a Puerto Rican and American scholar, artist, poet, song writer and activist. She holds the Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair in Ethics and Moral Leadership in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University. Her scholarship is known around the world and her efforts have earned her a large number of academic awards, including the Scholars of Color Distinguished Career Contribution Award by the American Education Research Association. Three critical Darderean scholars (Kortney Hernandez, Sharon Cronin, and Eduardo Lopez), who have been lovingly mentored, empowered, and challenged by Darder, and who have developed their critical consciousness through the soulful educational wisdom of Darder, have come together to embrace the (im)possible task of curating a volume of some of her most powerful educational scholarship. This volume includes Antonia Darder's central writings on the topics of language, culture, inequality, and education.
