Over the course of 20 years, this text has approached case management as both an art and a science by providing students and practitioners with the basics of case management theory, skills, and applications. This fourth edition, which focuses on both the social work and nursing professions, offers trainers, instructors, and students detailed information about how case management is delivered, major issues encountered in practice, how services are affected by different populations, and the unique skills that are required by case managers in order to be effective. Chapter exercises and case examples help readers practice some of the skills associated with the content offered. Case Management is unique in that it brings together the major professions that conduct case management in the United States. It is focused on skill learning more than theory, and discusses not only the importance of case management in the current social work and medical milieu, but also the challenges that case managers face in helping clients. Additionally, the text offers a model for integrated case management between professions and in numerous settings, including nursing centers, community mental health facilities, and criminal justice centers.

Old Friends, New Enemies. The Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy

This first scholarly account of the Royal Navy in the Pacific War is a companion volume to Arthur Marder's Old Friends, New Enemies: Strategic Illusions, 1936-1941 (0-19-822604-7, OP). Picking up the story at the nadir of British naval fortunes - `everywhere weak and naked', in Churchill's phrase - it examines the Royal Navy's role in events from 1942 to the Japanese surrender in August 1945. Drawing on both British and Japanese sources and personal accounts by participants, the authors vividly retell the story of the collapse of Allied defences in the Dutch East Indies, culminating in the Battle of the Java Sea. They recount the attempts of the `fighting admiral', Sir James Somerville, to train his motley fleet of cast-offs into an efficient fighting force in spite of the reluctance of Churchill, who resisted the formation of a full-scale British Pacific Fleet until the 1945 assault on the Ryukyu Islands immediately south of Japan. Meticulously researched and fully referenced, this unique and absorbing account provides a controversial analysis of the key personalities who shaped events in these momentous years, and makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the Pacific War. This book also appears in the Oxford General Books catalogue for Autumn 1990.
Small Town in Mass Society

Small Town in Mass Society

First published in 1958, Small Town in Mass Society set community studies on a new course by placing the small town within the framework of large-scale, bureaucratic mass society. Drawing attention to the dynamics of class and ethnicity in relation to economics and politics, this landmark work was among the first to document the consequences of centralized administration on life in American communities. Through a close study of "Springdale, New York," Arthur J. Vidich and Joseph Bensman depict the small town as continuously and increasingly drawn into the central institutions and processes of the total society. Vidich and Bensman based their conclusions on extensive interviews with and close observation of the inhabitants of one community. The original publication of the book caused a sharp response among the town's citizens who felt their trust had been violated and their town misrepresented. The present volume includes the editorials and correspondence evoked by that controversy, the authors' articles describing their methodology, a new foreword by Michael W. Hughey, and a new afterword in which Arthur J. Vidich recounts the creation and history of the book.
The Indochinese Experience of the French and the Americans

The Indochinese Experience of the French and the Americans

Arthur J. Dommen

Indiana University Press
2002

"Dommen's book promises to be the definitive political history of Indochina during the Franco-American era." —William M. Leary, E. Merton Coulter Professor of History, University of Georgia This magisterial study by Arthur J. Dommen sets the Indochina wars 'French and American' in perspective as no book that has come before. He summarizes the history of the peninsula from the Vietnamese War of Independence from China in 930-39 through the first French military actions in 1858, when the struggle of the peoples of Indochina with Western powers began. Dommen details the crucial episodes in the colonization of Indochina by the French and the indigenous reaction to it. The struggle for national sovereignty reached an acute state at the end of World War II, when independent governments rapidly assumed power in Vietnam and Cambodia. When the French returned, the struggle became one of open warfare, with Nationalists and Communists gripped in a contest for ascendancy in Vietnam, while the rulers of Cambodia and Laos sought to obtain independence by negotiation. The withdrawal of the French after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu brought the Indochinese face-to-face, whether as friends or as enemies, with the Americans. In spite of an armistice in 1954, the war between Hanoi and Saigon resumed as each enlisted the help of foreign allies, which led to the renewed loss of sovereignty as a result of alliances and an increasingly heavy loss of lives. Meticulous and detailed, Dommen's telling of this complicated story is always judicious. Nevertheless, many people will find his analysis of the Diem coup a disturbing account of American plotting and murder. This is an essential book for anyone who wants to understand Vietnam and the people who fought against the United States and won.

This volume introduces students to the emerging field of state mental health policy, its history, current policies, organizational models and required programming knowledge. Focusing on current issues and trends, it also provides administrative and policy practitioners with a previously unavailable source of new program designs and initiatives. Five chapters on program development identify key principles of programming and describe model programs in primary prevention, clinical treatment, and psychiatric rehabilitation. Contributors include leading scholars and practitioners, several having served as state commissioners of mental health. This is the first book written specifically on state mental health policy. Its collection of essays together with the editors' introduction and conclusion will provide direction for future inquiry and policy development.State mental health has become a rich source of policy, program, and practice experimentation. Heretofore these efforts have been insufficiently evaluated. The result is duplication of efforts and repetition of errors. This volume introduces its readers to state mental health policy as an emerging specialty. The introduction identifies pivotal issues explored in this collection and then presents an analytical framework and methodology. The initial section examines the historical backdrop and provides a detailed analysis of legal issues. The second section covers current policies and trends. The third, Mental Health Program Models, looks into the packaging of various direct and indirect practice modalities. It then delves into major program options for achieving the ends of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Examples of state-of-the-art public programs are also presented. The final section considers the problems of financially and administratively supporting these policies and programs. A summary chapter reviews conclusions and presents a range of recommendations directed primarily toward administrative integration and fiscal responsiveness.

The Angolan War

Routledge

The Angolan War of 1975-1976 focused international attention on an area -long relegated to the sidelines of world diplomacy and accented the historical momentum toward black control of southern African states. This book is the first to examine why a localized conflict in a remote area was the object of such extensive global concern. Dr. Klinghoffer discusses both the Soviet and the Cuban roles in Angola and evaluates the decisive change in Soviet foreign policy that, subsequently, caused the United States to question the very nature of Soviet-American detente. He answers the key question of whether the Soviet Union followed an overall plan for Angola or developed its policy over time, in reaction to the behavior of the United States, China, South Africa, Zaire, Portugal, and other political actors.
