Les parents d'Augustin Thierry habitaient Blois, et c'est dans le coll ge de cette ville qu'il termina ses tudes. Les yeux du jeune colier durent se reposer souvent sur les antiques b timents o se r unirent les tats-g n raux les plus orageux de l'ancienne monarchie, et il semble qu'il ait respir lui-m me sous les vo tes du vieux palais quelque chose de l'esprit la fois hardi et sens de ces bourgeois du XVIe si cle. C'est l , comme il nous l'a racont lui-m me et comme il ne faut pas essayer de le raconter apr s lui, que la muse de l'histoire laissa tomber sur lui un premier regard si plein de promesses; c'est l qu'il ressentit, en lisant les Martyrs de Chateaubriand, ce coup de foudre, comme on appelait au XVIIe si cle la premi re r v lation d'un autre sentiment, qui d cide un moment donn des grandes vocations litt raires. Un autre roman ou plut t un autre po me, Ivanho , devait plus tard l'aller chercher au milieu de la m l e politique, pour le rendre sa v ritable vocation. On peut dire que toute l'histoire intellectuelle de M. Thierry est dans ces deux impressions, puisqu'elles correspondent ses deux chefs-d'oeuvre historiques...
