Austin: The Province of Jurisprudence Determined

Austin: The Province of Jurisprudence Determined

John Austin

Cambridge University Press

The Province of Jurisprudence Determined (1832) is a classic of nineteenth-century English jurisprudence, a subject on which Austin had a profound impact. His book is primarily concerned with a meticulous explanation of most of the core concepts of his legal philosophy, including his conception of law, his separation of law and morality, and his theory of sovereignty. Almost a quarter of it consists of an interpretation and defence of the principle of utility. This edition includes the complete and unabridged text of the fifth (1885) and last edition. The comprehensive introduction discusses Austin's life, the main themes of his book, leading criticisms of his ideas, and interpretations of his legal philosophy. The edition also includes a bibliography and biographical synopses of the principal figures mentioned in the text.

In May 1958, one of the world’s largest motor manufacturers unveiled a diminutive two-seater that would take the world by storm. Small in stature yet able to punch well above its weight, the Austin-Healey Sprite rapidly gained an enthusiastic following among keen drivers, as well as an impressive record in competition. Being neither expensive nor exotic, for many motorists the Sprite opened the door to sports car ownership and, in so doing, its commercial success was almost guaranteed. With over 250 photographs, this book includes: the genesis of the Sprite, from the Austin Seven and pre-war MG Midget, via Donald Healey’s Riley- and Nash-engined models, to the Austin A30, A90 Atlantic and Healey Hundred. The development, launch and market reception is covered along with details of the evolution from Mk I to Mk IV, including the Frogeye and restyled ADO 41. Rallies, racing and record breaking details are given as well as information on modifications, special-bodied variants, replicas and finally, buying and restoring a Sprite today.

Coach Tony and Coach Lauren remind Austin the most important thing about football isn't winning—it's playing fair. When his team takes the field for their next game, will Austin choose to cheat again, or will he stand up for what's right? What would you do if you were in Austin's shoes?*** Join the Team! The Team Dungy series of picture books for young readers, ages 6-9, teaches character-building lessons through the familiar world of sports.

Born in 1952, the Austin-Healey 100 soon took the UK and US markets by storm. A beautiful, brutish car, it was what many sporting motorists had been waiting for, and at a relatively affordable price. Following the 100, was the 3000 - a car as successful on the rally stage as it was loved on the open road, and the Sprite - which recreated the market for the cheap 'everyman's' sports car. Graham Robson, an authority on the British motor industry, presents a concise history of Austin-Healey, and the marque's success on road and track. Illustrated throughout, it is an ideal introduction for all lovers of this quintessentially British sports car.
Austin Harrison and the English Review

Austin Harrison and the English Review

Martha S. Vogeler

University of Missouri Press

Political and literary journalist Austin Harrison became editor of the ""English Review"" in 1910. While holding that chair, he expanded the publication's literary scope by publishing articles on such issues as woman suffrage, parliamentary reform, the German threat, and Irish home rule. But although he edited the ""Review"" far longer than its celebrated founder, Ford Madox Ford, history has long confined him to the shadows of not only his predecessor but also his father, the English Positivist Frederic Harrison. This first scholarly assessment of Harrison's tenure at the ""English Review"" from 1910 to 1923 shows him courting controversy, establishing reputations, winning and losing authors, and pushing the limits of the publishable as he made his ""Great Adult Review"" the most consistently intelligent and challenging monthly of its day. Martha Vogeler offers a compelling personal and family narrative and a new perspective on British literary culture and political journalism in the years just before, during, and after the First World War.Vogeler provides a revealing account of Harrison the editor - his writings and opinions, his public life and relations - as she also traces the complex relationship between a son and his famous father. Balancing a scholar's attention to detail and a fine writer's eye for style, she relates Harrison's improbable friendships with the notorious Frank Harris and the outrageous Aleister Crowley. And she has mined Harrison's correspondence to lend insight into the careers of such writers as Ford Madox Ford, D. H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, John Masefield, Bernard Shaw, Arnold Bennett, and Marie Stopes. Other figures such as George Gissing, Bertrand Russell, Lord Northcliffe, and important Irish revolutionaries appear in new contexts.Ranging widely across literature, foreign relations, national politics, the women's movement, censorship, and sexuality, Vogeler captures the themes of Harrison's era. She describes his transformation from Germanophobe before and during World War I to an outspoken critic of the punitive measures against Germany in the Treaty of Versailles. She explores the ambiguities in his engagement with modernist aesthetics and in his attempt to escape the shadow of his father while benefiting from his family's wealth and connections. Vogeler's assessment of Harrison's books further sharpens our understanding of his ideas about Germany, women, education, and Victorian family life - notably his underappreciated tribute/rebuke to his father, ""Frederic Harrison: Thoughts and Memories"". This account of Austin Harrison's career allows us to observe a journalist making his way in a highly competitive world and opens up a new window on Britain in the era of the Great War.
