Läkaren och författaren Axel Munthe (1857-1949) är för den breda allmänheten främst känd som drottning Victorias läkare och för Boken om San Michele (1930), som översatts till ett fyrtiotal språk och gjort Munthe till en av de mest lästa svenska författarna någonsin. Mindre bekant är Munthes övriga litterära produktion, i dag nästan bortglömd. Av en samtida kritiker beskrevs han som en av de finaste och egendomligaste prosalyriker, som skrivit på svenska och hans verk som en högt odlad andes vida och fria tankar förmedlad genom en stil raffinerad i sin förnäma enkelhet. Av Strindberg blev omdömet ett annat: Hvilket as till karl! Fy Fan! Brev & Skisser innehåller Munthes samlade texter, skrivna och publicerade åren 18851909. Under koleraepidemin i 1880-talets Neapel och dess fattigkvarter fick Munthe bekänna färg i alla avseenden. Fantasi, inlevelse och medkänsla var hans största tillgångar som läkare. Han berördes av de fattigas lidande och tyckte att han liksom bars av vingar, på väg från sjuksäng till sjuksäng. I varje hus fanns sjukdomen. I början lovade hans behandlingar gott. Men sedan. Döden fick ofta sista ordet. Redan i dessa resebrev, från ganska unga år, är det uppenbart att Munthe betraktade världen på ett alldeles eget sätt. Mindre bekant är Munthes övriga litterära produktion, i dag nästan bortglömd. Röda korset & Järnkorset var Munthes första längre prosaverk. Boken skrevs på engelska och utkom redan 1916. Bara några veckor efter Första världskrigets utbrott lämnade den då 57-årige Axel Munthe Sverige för att enrollera sig i franska och brittiska Röda korset och för att tjänstgöra som läkare vid fronten. Valet av sida i kriget var självklar; han hyste sedan ungdomen en djup sympati för allt anglosaxiskt, hans fru var engelska och han hade många brittiska och amerikanska patienter. Därtill kom hans nästan av besatthet präglade tyskhat honom att ta omedelbart ta ställning i konflikten. Sina erfarenheter från kriget kom han att snabbt formulera i denna bok, där inte minst beskrivningen av sårade och lemlästade soldater väcker reaktioner. Röda korset & Järnkorset, som här presenteras för första gången på svenska, är en propagandaskrift med ambitionen att påvisa tyska krigsförbrytelser. Boken blev en succé och storsäljare i England, medan den i Tyskland väckte ett djupt hat mot författaren. Som tidsdokument bär den vittnesbörd om krigets brutala verklighet och är samtidigt ett exempel på hur realistisk och kritisk litteratur censureras av våldsmaktens apologeter. Boken avslutas med efterord av Kristian Gerner och Bengt Jangfeldt. Samtidigt med Röda korset & Järnkorset utges Axel Munthes Brev & Skisser i redigerad och utökad nyutgåva.
Axel Munthe (1857-1949) var en svensk läkare, författare, kosmopolit, filantrop och övertygad djurvän. Han var bl.a. drottning Victorias livläkare fram till hennes död 1930. Som författare har han blivit mest känd för Boken om San Michele (1929), som gjorde honom världsberömd. Den blev en internationell bestseller och har översatts till fler än 60 språk. Boken kan närmast beskrivas som en fantasirik och underhållande blandning av filosofiska funderingar kring livet och döden, medicinsk etik, djurens rätt och inte alltid helt sanna historier ur författarens händelserika liv. I fokus för boken står dock Munthes dröm om att bygga ett hus på Capri, en dröm han kom att förverkliga. I ett av bokens företal diskuteras varför den blev en sådan enorm bestseller. Bland de förklaringar som fördes fram och återgavs av Munthe fanns att ”den boken är olik varenda bok jag någonsin läst” och att ”den mannen är olik alla andra människor jag någonsin råkat.”
