Description in English] Latin America and the Caribbean: New forms of Cooperation South-South dimensions South-South cooperation has acquired renewed importance. The enormous heterogeneity and the pressing needs of middle income countries, like those of Latin America, demonstrate that international aid flows are insufficient, since they have largely shifted to other regions of the world. In addition, within these countries there has been an increasing willingness to be important actors in the cooperation process for the development of other nations. This book seeks to contribute to the analysis of the ways in which the different modalities of cooperation for development can be observed in the Latin American region and the challenges and potentialities they face in a dynamic and complex context. Through the contributions of these distinguished authors, the book aims to help generate knowledge on the path to follow to ensure that international cooperation, in any of its forms, is more efficacious and contributes more effectively to the development of nations.
An Introduction to Risk and Return from Common Stocks
Richard Brealey presents a brief, nontechnical description of current research on investment management and its implications for the investment manager. He covers market efficiency, valuation, and modern portfolio theory in a book that The New York Times noted "rates high as reading for every professional investor."Brealey's easy-to-understand approach to modern investment theory will also prove invaluable to students. The book evaluates the use of technical models and fundamental analysis for common stock selection, examining the implications of the random walk hypothesis, publicly available information, and the efficient market theory. It takes up the valuation of common stocks and reasons for fluctuations in earnings and deals with the choice of a common stock portfolio, discussing how stocks move together, the effect of the market on stock prices, passive and active portfolios, risk and return, and measuring investment performance.

This book is a sequel to An Introduction to Risk and Return from Common Stocks (The MIT Press, 1969), although it is fully self-contained and can be read independently. Both books describe in non-technical language the behavior of common stock prices as revealed by formal statistical work. In the process they offer a broad survey of recent quantitative academic research on the subject, much of which is currently in an inaccessible form. The earlier book, which the New York Times says "rates high as reading for every professional investor," was concerned with the basic factors affecting risk and return from common stocks. The present work is concerned primarily with unusual factors that may influence the value of an investment. It is divided into three parts: the first considers various company decisions that may affect the price of its stock (decisions on capital structure, dividend policy, and acquisitions); the second looks at particular types of activity in the stock (insider trading, short selling, and secondary distributions); while the third considers securities that are convertible to common stock. Richard Brealey continues to cover new ground. Little of the material in this book can be found in existing investments texts, and like his first book, it should provide an invaluable source of information for the professional investor and may well be received in the same spirit.

Description in English]Latin America and the Caribbean: Integrated or Marginalized? Regional integration has to do with understanding complementarity and working together, with shared visions and the ultimate goal of putting the welfare of populations before tensions and ideologies. The challenges of today's world, characterized by a broad interdependence, varied hubs of power and a restructuring of visions on how to combat new threats, which have features particular to the age, require Latin America to succeed in building shared strategic objectives so that its interests are heard in this reconfiguration of the world system. Latin America has not managed to establish this joint vision in regard to any of the major international actors; however, it should be emphasized that new ways of relating to them in a more horizontal manner have been developed with some degree of success. At the sub-regional level it is important to observe the creation of new integration mechanisms or processes that seek to adapt and respond to the current context. In spite of this, it would appear that, in terms of regional integration, Latin America has achieved little concrete progress, a tendency that the creation of new integration initiatives will not necessarily resolve.

'The best book on captaincy, written by an expert' - Mike AthertonMike Brearley is one of the most successful cricket captains of all time, and, in 1981, he captained the England team to the momentous Ashes series victory against Australia. In The Art of Captaincy, his study on leadership and motivation, he draws directly on his experience of man-managing a team, which included a pugnacious Ian Botham and Geoffrey Boycott, to explain what it takes to be a leader on and off the field. Giving an insight into both his tactical understanding of the game, as well as how to get a group of individuals playing as a team in order to get the best out of them, The Art of Captaincy is a classic handbook on how to generate, nurture and inspire success. With a foreword by former England player and BBC commentator Ed Smith, to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of its first publication, and an afterword by director Sam Mendes, The Art of Captaincy remains urgently relevant for cricket fans and business leaders alike. Covering the ability to use intuition, resourcefulness, clear-headedness and the importance of empathy as a means of achieving shared goals, Brearley's seminal account of captaincy is both the ultimate blueprint for creating a winning mind set, but also shows how the lessons in the sporting arena can be applied to any walk of personal and professional life.

Winner, Gold Award, Texas Association of Museums Wilder Awards, 2011“I begin with a silver photographic image, a kind of evidence. Then I paint on this in many transparent layers of oil paint and pencil. If I am lucky, the media combine and become enmeshed, a curious union of what was real with my own exaggerations and embellishments, so I can show how beautiful it all is-the light, the form, the texture, and color-because I am a sensualist, and this is my deepest pleasure, my lovely addiction.” -Kate BreakeyKate Breakey is internationally recognized for large-scale, richly hand-colored photographs, including her acclaimed series of luminous portraits of birds, flowers, animals, and insects. Since 1980, her work has appeared in more than seventy one-person exhibitions and more than fifty group exhibitions in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, China, New Zealand, and France. Breakey's work is held in many public collections, including the Australian National Gallery in Canberra, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University in San Marcos, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.Painted Light is the first career retrospective of Breakey's work. With images from nine suites of photographs, including Laws of Physics, Principles of Mathematics, Still Life, Loose Ends, Memories and Dreams, Cactus, and Small Deaths, it encompasses a quarter century of prolific image-making and reveals the wide range of Breakey's creative explorations. In her introduction and throughout the book, Breakey offers personal accounts of "the things that matter most" to her life as an artist and traces her influences, among them her fascination with classical European painting, her close connection to the world of science, and her heartfelt love of the natural world, which began during her childhood in rural Australia. These texts give considerable insight into Breakey's beautiful images, creative process, and transformative journey "to distill observations into a visual language in which they can be contemplated"-the motive that inspires all of Breakey's work.
Power in Business and the State

Power in Business and the State

Frank Bealey

It is commonplace that political power is becoming more centralized and remote: faceless people, sometimes in unknown places, determine our circumstances and our opportunities. This ground breaking book argues that this happened through a slow development which began before globalization.Power in Business and the State queries our freedom to make our own history. Current circumstances may be so far from our own choosing that our history is now being made for us, rather than something we control ourselves. Political power is so centralized, and economic power so concentrated, that popular control of democratic government has become increasingly difficult. The sheer magnitude of the author's research underpinning this book, and the uncluttered methodological framework in which it is presented, provides a highly readable text.
Iranian Music and Popular Entertainment

Iranian Music and Popular Entertainment

The word motreb finds its roots in the Arabic verb taraba, meaning ‘to make happy.’ Originally denoting all musicians in Iran, motrebi came to be associated, pejoratively, with the cheerful vulgarity of the lowbrow entertainer. In Iranian Music and Popular Entertainment, GJ Breyley and Sasan Fatemi examine the historically overlooked motrebi milieu, with its marginalized characters, from luti to gardan koloft and mashti, as well as the tenacity of motreb who continued their careers against all odds. They then turn to losanjelesi, the most pervasive form of Iranian popular music that developed as motrebi declined, and related musical forms in Iran and its diasporic popular cultural centre, Los Angeles. For the first time in English, the book makes available musical transcriptions, analysis and lyrics that illustrate the complexities of this history. As it presents the findings of the authors’ years of ethnographic work with the history’s protagonists, from senior motreb to pop-rock stars, the book reveals parallels between the decline of motrebi and the rise of ‘modernity.’ In the twentieth century, the fate of Tehran’s motrebi music was shaped by the social and urban polarization that ensued from the modern market economy, and losanjelesi would be similarly affected by transnational relations, revolution, war and migration. Through its detailed and informed examination of Iranian popular music, this study reveals much about the values and anxieties of Iranian society, and is a valuable resource for students and scholars of Iranian society and history.
