Midan, a Levantine-born financier lives and works in the West but still yearns for the traditions of his childhood in the East.? He has brought up his three sons, Tzemlo, Sultan and Dinau, to appreciate aspects of both cultures, but each one has gone his own way. Dinau has maintained strong links to his Eastern heritage, having recently completed a PhD in Archaeology and Ancient Civilizations. Tzemlo, by comparison, has been attracted to the bright lights of Western culture, and the gaudy trappings of corporate wealth. Between the two extremes is Sultan, equally at home in both Britain and Turkey. Sultan and Dinau set up a kebab shop in Antioch's old town, only to discover their direct competition across the street is a newly opened branch of the American fast-food chain Burger Pit-Stop. To add insult to injury, the Western restaurant is under the management of their now near-estranged brother Tzemlo. Will Tzemlo learn that there's more to life than making money? And will the brothers be able to reconcile their differences before it's too late? From Davos to London, and then Antioch, Baba and Burgers is a light-hearted novel about the East-West dichotomy as played out in the microcosm of this one family.

Though her family is devasted, they respect the matriarch of their family and help her with this new transition. Mitra slowly begins to settle into her environment as her great-granddaughter, Sofija, visits Mitra every week, not satisfied that her partner-in-crime has left her home. Sofija begins to reflect on their conversations and decides to write her baba's biography. Each visit brings more questions about Mitra's childhood in the former Yugoslavia and the love story of her great-grandparents, leading to night-long conversations about the difference in generational traditions. While Mitra delves into her past, images of her husband, Petar, and the life they made for themselves in this new country flood her memory. Though longing to be with him, she is determined to focus on her new family at Maple Retirement Place while keeping a watchful eye on her children. Yet, when a sudden illness rocks the foundation of her family, Mitra's faith is shaken. She prays that the strength and love she and Petar created as a family will reach beyond her children's generations to comfort the next. Baba's Story celebrates Mitra's immigration to Canada and how the next generations of her family flourish in the country she now calls home.

Baba Sy, the World Champion of 1963-1964 of 10x10 Draughts - Volume I
This book should be considered a historical book, as it is the draughts' career of Baba Sy, a prominent Senegalese player. He was able to be the best in the world without reading any books. He had a natural talent and was a self-made man thanks to the game of checkers. I have witnessed the achievements of the great Baba Sy and I have been in the early stage of the great players like Harm Wiersma and Ton Sijbrands, on which I predicted in 1964 that they would be a future world champions. So I know the mentality that one must have to succeed in this mind sport. My 40 year stay in Spain and my research on the Moors permits me to know more about the Islamic custom. And so I am now in a much better position than 40 years ago to comment properly on the life of Baba Sy.
