Abortion Politics in the Federal Courts

Abortion Politics in the Federal Courts

Barbara M. Yarnold

Praeger Publishers Inc
1995
sidottu
In this analysis of federal court cases relying upon the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, the author finds that the pro-life movement in the United States has suffered repeated losses in abortion litigation. Additionally, her research indicates that, despite claims to the contrary, the pro-life movement is a loose collection of underfunded and understaffed public interest organizations. The pro-choice forces are vastly more powerful in abortion litigation, have superior organization and financing, and include not only public interest groups but also private interests such as clinics and professional medical organizations. Divided into three parts, the study begins with a public law analysis of the progeny of Roe cases, examining those variables which appear to impact court decisions. Next the work examines political factors and litigation resources as variables in explaining court decisions. And finally, the work offers a descriptive analysis of abortion litigants which divides the groups into major categories and evaluates them in terms of their resources, longevity, and other such factors. This book will be of interest to those seriously interested in the political and legal ramifications of the abortion controversy.

For decades, educators, historians, and social commentators accorded major responsibility for the reform of medical education in the United States to the Flexner Report of 1910. More recently, historians have begun to challenge the impact of the Report and the desirability of the changes attributed to it. This volume takes the themes articulated in the Report and traces their development. With each theme being discussed by a specialist in the subject area, the book provides a comprehensive review of medical education in the twentieth century. These themes, many of which have not been discussed in other books, include the basic sciences, the clinical curriculum, women in medicine, black medical education, and sectarian medical education. In addition, the volume includes chapters on the evolution of the health care delivery system, trends in financing medical education, the use of outpatient settings for clinical education, the current status of the medical curriculum and needed changes, and health manpower needs. The work concludes with a chapter discussing the current proposals for change and how they relate to the problems and reforms of the Flexner era. The work will be of interest to medical school administrators, policy makers, and faculty members as well as to practicing physicians.
The Filipino Americans

The Filipino Americans

Barbara M. Posadas

In the year 2000, Filipino Americans will be the largest Asian American group. This volume is the first detailed historical study of the major post-1965 immigration of Filipinos to the United States. It provides comprehensive coverage of the recent Filipino American experience, from the pivotal Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, under which most Filipinos entered this country, to their values and customs, economic and political status, organizational affiliations, and contemporary issues and problems. Students and interested readers will be rewarded with a rich portrayal of individual immigrants and their stories.Filipino Americans emigrated from a nation that has a special relationship with the United States, dating from 1898 to 1946, when the Philippines was a U.S. colony. After a brief account of Philippine history, The Filipino Americans introduces a diverse immigrant population, with accounts of students, sailors, war brides, and nurses who arrived before 1965. Legislation in 1965 encouraged immigration of professionals, predominantly physicians and nurses, and permitted them to bring relatives. Posadas shows how these new Americans attempted to retain Philippine values and customs amid American economic, political, and cultural life. Family issues discussed include education and the model minority, gangs, divorce, and aging in a different culture. In addition, future immigration is an important topic, as many kin are left behind. The final chapter on Filipino American identity has particular relevance with today's multicultural debates. Tables, photos, a glossary, and biographical profiles complement this outstanding look at these new Americans.

It is distinguished by its focus on the social setting for English as a global language, the latest thinking about grammatical theory, and new theories of how first and second languages are learned and taught. Part II is about the features of English that educated speakers consider the most likely and probable in Academic English. The English Language Teacher in Global Civil Society
How can English language teachers contribute to peace locally and globally? English language teachers and learners are located in the global civil society – an international network of civil organizations and NGOs related to human rights, the environment, and sustainable peace. English, with its special role as an international language, is a major tool for communication within this network. On the local level, many teachers are interested in promoting reconciliation and sustainable peace, but often do not know how to do so. This book provides information, analysis, and techniques to help teachers around the world take action toward this goal. Balancing, in a readable and accessible way, the global and the local, core and periphery, cultural diffusion and resistance, theory and practice, pessimism and optimism, outsider and insider perspectives, the expert role and the apprentice role, and prescriptive and elicitive methods, it offers an alternative to literature about critical applied linguistics, globalization, and peace education that is simply too complex and wordy to spread easily from theoretician to the classroom teacher. The English Teacher in Global Civil Society: synthesizes threads from many fields and topics into a coherent and empowering argument for the activist role English language teachers can take to promote social changedraws on humanistic education, peace education, cross-cultural understanding, problem-posing, cooperative learning, and critical thinking methodologies to help English language teachers learn how to teach conflict resolution skills in their classrooms covers issues in critical applied linguistics, approaches and methodologies in ESL/EFL, global and local curricular issues, and specific skill areas such reading, writing, and speakingsuggests a new goal for English language teachers: global citizenship. This engaging, informative, provocative, and highly readable book is a welcome resource for English language teacher trainers, pre-service teachers, practicing classroom teachers, and Peace Corps workers around the world.

The Art of Healing is a resource to tap into your creativity to find joy, relaxation, healing and comfort, and a deeper knowledge of who you have the potential to be through meditation and step by step art exercises. No artistic talent or training is needed to create beautiful art which is personally meaningful to you. This book is a resource for you to return to over and over for sparking your creativity, resting your mind, gaining insight, self-exploration and spiritual growth. Each time you do the art exercises, you will have a different result, different insight, different experience, depending on your current life season, situation, or need. After each exercise is a blank page for journaling or recording reflections of your experience. The back of the book is an art journal. There are pages at the beginning labeled for the exercises that could be adapted to be done right in the book, if you choose. There is a traditional color wheel that you can color before making your own personal color wheel. Following the pages for the exercises are blank pages for you to continue creating as you like Writing is a great form of expression and insight. You could also create art journal pages combining drawing, color, and collage with your journal writing. Doodle, collage, paint, color, write, anything you like. Just create If you would like to try out the exercises first in the journal, most could be done with just pen, markers, colored pencil or collage. Be sure to separate the page you are working on from the remaining pages with a piece of cardboard or plastic to prevent bleeding onto the next page. You could also use watercolor and acrylic paints as long as you separate the pages. Just a suggestion, the Dollar Tree stores sell a 2 pack of translucent, firm but thin, plastic sheet cutting boards which you can easily cut to the size of your book and use for bleed proof separation. They are a staple of my art room. They can also be used as a reusable paint palette. If you let acrylic paint dry on the palette, it will peel off and can be thrown out rather than putting it down the sink. If you choose to create in the book, when you have completed book size versions of the exercises, for your next experience, try using a larger canvas, either heavy watercolor paper, or stretched canvas and create some beautiful art to decorate your room or home. The Clay meditation ball and the Splat painting are the only ones that cannot be adapted to be completed in the book. A visual prayer flag can be created in the book, similar to the painted prayer, but it would be best to create it in fabric and let it fly outside for the wind to carry its blessings. AGAIN, these are suggestions on how to use the book. No rules. Just create THE HEALING IS IN THE PROCESS

Stewart Barry Segal, M.D. claims that America's obsession with dieting is killing the population. The unnatural effects of dieting leaves Americans five pounds heavier and unhealthier than when they started. In his book, "Diets and Other Unnatural Acts," Dr. Segal explains that being wealthy is not as important as being "wellthy."Dr. Segal credits an original patient for the inspiration to create his "Live Wellthy" system. After seeing how his patient misspent his health, Segal decided to write a book showing how crash diets and trendy magic bullets were ineffective and how living a life where being well trumps excesses and excuses would be beneficial to everyone. He uses his book to compare dieting to finances. He explains that people should invest in themselves the way they invest in their financial wellbeing."Everyone understands savings and checking accounts and the need to work toward financial security," Dr. Segal says. "The same tools used to invest in building financial wealth can be used to gain physical, emotional, nutritional, and spiritual 'wellth.'"By working hard to build up wellthy reserves in your health accounts, you will be able to reap the benefits. Segal feels that America's obsession with quick-fix diets and exercise routines can prove to be unhealthy and needs to stop. By investing in your wellthy "self," you can maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle without the ups and downs of dieting. This easy to read guide gives practical advice on caring for yourself. Dr. Segal uses analogies to build a workable healthcare plan that sets his book apart from any other lifestyle book. By encouraging his readers to adapt his "Living Wellthy" lifestyle, they can avoid making a bad health investment and avoid regrets and disappointment."Diets and Other Unnatural Acts" is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other sources including Kindle.
