George Barnett transformed the United States Marine Corps from an antiquated afterthought to a modern force with an international reputation. After a long apprenticeship as a junior officer, Barnett emerged as a pioneer of amphibious warfare. Leading the experimental Advanced Base Force Brigade at Culebra in 1914, he secured the Corps' survival by establishing its amphibious mission. Appointed Commandant the same year, Barnett prepared the Marines for service in Europe, overcoming opposition from the Army and Navy. Without him, the Marines would not have served in France during World War I. Barnett left the post of Commandant in 1920 and began dictating his recollections of 45 years of service, including his education at Annapolis, overseas service in Sitka, Samoa and Peking, and encounters with Robert Louis Stevenson, the Meiji Emperor and the Dowager Empress of China. This edition of his memoirs includes chapter-by-chapter analysis by the editor and provides an unrivalled look at the Corps between the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Long mined by scholars, Barnett's memoir is now available to the public.

Jerry Barnett is famous for his automotive and motorcycle cartoons, as well as his political and satirical cartoons. He is also famous worldwide for his accurate cartoons and great story lines to go with them. Buzz Walneck is also famous worldwide, as an authority on classic motorcycles. Buzz has, for decades, published various classic motorcycle magazines, and Jerry has been there throughout - providing everything from cover art to comic strips. When I asked permission to put this collection of his into a printed book, he was very enthused so, Jerry, Steve and I have done just that. Jerry was born in Evansville, Indiana, and when growing up, he had several cycles, that you'll learn all about from his stories in this book. His love and passion for them is still just as strong. He memorizes amazing details of all kinds of bikes, be they Indians, Triumphs, Velocette, BSA Kawasaki's and Harleys plus far more. Jerry who was born on May 13, 1937. When growing up, his dad gave his good advice as dads usually do, if we just listen His future in that area would be to work in the coal mine... His decision was easy... draw for a living. Schooling provided by his dad was at the "John Herron Art Institution". They taught true art, and even had a nude model at one time Jerry did very well, but true art was not his way... he liked character drawing... The more accurate school would have been the Academy of Cartoon Art, in Chicago, but distance and cost prevented that. Jerry worked for a number of newspapers including "Gannet" with between 80 - 100 publications. He was making about $25.00 a week. Things got better but Jerry said he tired from "having to touch up photos of a politician who had a fly land on his nose when the photo was taken." Work for Peterson Publishing was about 15-years, and his love of cars too had him doing "CARtoons" for them. Moving on, Jerry found himself at a Democratic newspaper doing political cartoons that are still being done weekly in close to 100 newspapers. Jerry is still an active rider, and often drives from Indianapolis, to Martinsville, Indiana to attend Buzz's "Walneck's Motorcycle Swap Meets." And, of course, he's still drawing for Buzz, and motorcycle nuts everywhere.
Graham Barnett was killed in Rankin, Texas, on December 6, 1931. His death brought an end to a storied career, but not an end to the legends that claimed he was a gunman, a hired pistolero on both sides of the border, a Texas Ranger known for questionable shootings in Company B under Captain Fox, a deputy sheriff, a bootlegger, and a possible “fixer” for both law enforcement and outlaw organizations. In real life he was a good cowboy, who provided for his family the best way he could, and who did so by slipping seamlessly between the law enforcement community and the world of illegal liquor traffickers. Stories say he killed unnumbered men on the border, but he stood trial only twice and was acquitted both times.Barnett lived in the twentieth century but carried with him many of the attitudes of old frontier Texas. Among those beliefs was that if there were problems, a man dealt with them directly and forcefully—with a gun. His penchant to settle a score with gunplay brought him into confrontation with Sheriff W. C. Fowler, a former friend, who shot Barnett with the latter’s own submachine gun on loan. One contemporary summed it up best: “Officers in West Texas got the best sleep they had had in twenty years that Sunday night after Fowler killed Graham.”
Francis-Barnett was central in the two golden eras of the motorcycle industry, the 1930s and the 1950s. The company was founded in 1919 by Gordon Francis and Arthur Barnett, and based in Lower Ford Street, Coventry, England. Francis-Barnett played a key role in the motorcycle industry with the production of it's 'home to work' commuting two-stroke motorcycles. The author looks at the key role these innovative and unique bikes played in the glory days of the British motorcycling industry.
