Over six years of imprisonment in Australia’s offshore migrant detention centre, the Kurdish-Iranian journalist and writer Behrouz Boochani bore personal witness to the suffering and degradation inflicted on him and his fellow refugees, culminating eventually in his prize-winning book – No Friend but the Mountains. In the articles, essays, and poems he wrote while detained, he emerged as both a tenacious campaigner and activist, as well as a deeply humane voice which reflects the indignity and plight of the many thousands of detained migrants across the world. In this book Boochani’s collected writings are combined with essays from experts on migration, refugee rights, politics, and literature. Together, they provide a moving, creative and challenging account of not only one writer’s harrowing experience and inspiring resilience, but the wider structures of violence which hold thousands of human beings in a state of misery in migrant camps throughout Western nation-states and beyond.
Foucault in Iran

Foucault in Iran

Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi

University of Minnesota Press
2016
sidottu
Were the thirteen essays Michel Foucault wrote in 1978–1979 endorsing the Iranian Revolution an aberration of his earlier work or an inevitable pitfall of his stance on Enlightenment rationality, as critics have long alleged? Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi argues that the critics are wrong. He declares that Foucault recognized that Iranians were at a threshold and were considering if it were possible to think of dignity, justice, and liberty outside the cognitive maps and principles of the European Enlightenment. Foucault in Iran centers not only on the significance of the great thinker’s writings on the revolution but also on the profound mark the event left on his later lectures on ethics, spirituality, and fearless speech. Contemporary events since 9/11, the War on Terror, and the Arab Uprisings have made Foucault’s essays on the Iranian Revolution more relevant than ever. Ghamari-Tabrizi illustrates how Foucault saw in the revolution an instance of his antiteleological philosophy: here was an event that did not fit into the normative progressive discourses of history. What attracted him to the Iranian Revolution was precisely its ambiguity.Theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich, this interdisciplinary work will spark a lively debate in its insistence that what informed Foucault’s writing was not an effort to understand Islamism but, rather, his conviction that Enlightenment rationality has not closed the gate of unknown possibilities for human societies.

Evidentiality in Sa'di's Poetry and Prose

Evidentiality in Sa'di's Poetry and Prose

Behrooz Mahmoodi-Bakhtiari; Masoumeh Mehrabi

This study is the first to introduce evidentiality to the stylistic analysis of literary works, specifically that of the great Persian writer Sa'di, focusing on how he used linguistic means to illustrate a real or ideational world. The authors begin by introducing the concept of evidentiality; its definition, its coding in Persian, the rationale behind evidentiality analysis, and semantic-pragmatic functions of evidentiality. The book highlights how evidentiality can be accounted for as a stylistic device to reveal the validity of a narration, as well as the author’s commitment and contribution to it. Three of Sa'di’s major works are analyzed – Bustan, Golestan and Sonnets – using Krippendoff's frequency approach. It is argued that Sa'di deployed an array of evidentials in his work, from direct visual evidentials in Golestan and Sonnets to heard and quoted evidentials in Bustan. To illustrate this, the book includes translations of Sa'di’s poetry and prose. In addition, the authors consider historical and contemporary manifestations of the Persian narrative style, as well as exploring the cultural concerns of the Persian speech community. The book will appeal to general linguists, practitioners of pragmatics and stylistics, literary critics, and those interested in contrastive analysis of literature and cultural studies.

14 Rules for Admissions Screening in Higher Ed: An Antidote to Bias
Is it possible to create an admissions screening process that allows any educational institution to select top-performing applicants and simultaneously promote diversity? Is it possible to choose applicants genuinely motivated in the pursuit of a profession rather than those primarily focused on acquiring wealth or status? Is it possible to achieve all of the above, being fair to all applicants and reducing the time and cost of the admissions screening process? Dr. Behrouz Moemeni, one of the most sought-after admissions expert and an outspoken advocate for fair and scientific admissions screening, believes the answer to all of the above questions is a resounding "YES". In this thought-provoking book, he explains how using first principles in psychology, immunology, sociology, evolutionary biology, statistics, physics, and chemistry can help universities select applicants passionate about their future professions. After convincing the readers about the flaws of current admissions screening practices - such as the use of situational judgment tests, standardized tests, and traditional interviews - he explains a step-by-step action plan described in 14 "rules" designed for any educational institution seeking to construct a fair and scientific admissions screening process. The book is filled with blunt reasoning debunking common myths and lighthearted humor about what to do instead suitable for admissions professionals, researchers and anyone interested in applicant screening in higher education. Here's what you are going to learn in this book: The fundamental problems with current admissions screening practices that lead to profound bias against minority groups and lower income applicantsHow to streamline the entire admissions process into one single step The Big Three(TM) The only 3 qualities that matter in admissions screeningHow to select applicants based on The Big Three characteristicsHow to design questions that seek the truth from each applicantHow to separate highly suitable applicants from the rest without any guess work or "gut feeling"How to design questions that promote diversity while being fair to applicantsHow to increase the reliability and validity of any admissions screening practice or toolHow to democratize the admissions process and educational institutions Sample questions and answers for admissions teamsAnd much more

C++ Programming: An Object-Oriented Approach has two primary objectives: Teach the basic principles of programming as outlined in the ACM curriculum for a CS1 class and teach the basic constructs of the C++ language. While C++ is a complex and professional language, experience shows that beginning students can easily understand and use C++.C++ Programming: An Object-Oriented Approach uses a combination of thorough, well-ordered explanations and a strong visual framework to make programming concepts accessible to students. The authors stress incremental program development, wherein program analysis is followed by building a structure chart, constructing UML flow diagrams, writing algorithms, undertaking program design, and finally testing. This foundation, combined with a focus on the benefits of a consistent and well-documented programming style, prepares students to tackle the academic and professional programming challenges they will encounter down the road with confidence.
Data Communications and Networking with TCP/IP Protocol Suite ISE
Data Communications and Networking, 6th Edition, teaches the principles of networking using TCP/IP protocol suite. It employs a bottom-up approach where each layer in the TCP/IP protocol suite is built on the services provided by the layer below. This edition has undergone a major restructuring to reduce the number of chapters and focus on the organization of TCP/IP protocol suite. It concludes with three chapters that explore multimedia, network management, and cryptography/network security. Technologies related to data communications and networking are among the fastest growing in our culture today, and there is no better guide to this rapidly expanding field than Data Communications and Networking.

Introduction to Parallel Processing

Introduction to Parallel Processing

Behrooz Parhami

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2013
nidottu
THE CONTEXT OF PARALLEL PROCESSING The field of digital computer architecture has grown explosively in the past two decades. Through a steady stream of experimental research, tool-building efforts, and theoretical studies, the design of an instruction-set architecture, once considered an art, has been transformed into one of the most quantitative branches of computer technology. At the same time, better understanding of various forms of concurrency, from standard pipelining to massive parallelism, and invention of architectural structures to support a reasonably efficient and user-friendly programming model for such systems, has allowed hardware performance to continue its exponential growth. This trend is expected to continue in the near future. This explosive growth, linked with the expectation that performance will continue its exponential rise with each new generation of hardware and that (in stark contrast to software) computer hardware will function correctly as soon as it comes off the assembly line, has its down side. It has led to unprecedented hardware complexity and almost intolerable dev- opment costs. The challenge facing current and future computer designers is to institute simplicity where we now have complexity; to use fundamental theories being developed in this area to gain performance and ease-of-use benefits from simpler circuits; to understand the interplay between technological capabilities and limitations, on the one hand, and design decisions based on user and application requirements on the other.

Post-earthquake fire is one of the most complicated problems resulting from earthquakes and presents a serious risk to urban structures. Most standards and codes ignore the possibility of post-earthquake fire; thus it is not factored in when determining the ability of buildings to withstand load. This book describes the effects of post-earthquake fire on partially damaged buildings located in seismic urban regions. The book quantifies the level of associated post-earthquake fire effects, and discusses methods for mitigating the risk at both the macro scale and micro scale. The macro scale strategies address urban regions while the micro scale strategies address building structures, covering both existing buildings and those that are yet to be designed.

The Award-winning International Bestselling Story of One Man's Six Year Detention in Australia ‘A powerfully vivid account of the experiences of a refugee: desperation, brutality, suffering, and all observed with an eye that seems to see everything and told in a voice that’s equal to the task.' - Phillip PullmanIn 2013, Kurdish journalist Behrouz Boochani sought asylum in Australia but was instead illegally imprisoned in the country’s most notorious detention centre on Manus Island. This book is the result.Boochani spent nearly five years typing passages of this book one text at a time from a secret mobile phone in prison. Compiled and translated from Farsi, they form an incredible story of how escaping political persecution in Iran, he ended up trapped as a stateless person. This vivid, gripping portrait of his years of incarceration and exile shines devastating light on the fates of so many people, as borders close around the world. No Friend but the Mountains is both a brave act of witness and a moving testament to the humanity of all people, in the most extreme of circumstances.'A brilliant book. No Friend but the Mountains can rightly take its place on the shelf of world prison literature . . . It is a profound victory for a young poet who showed us all how much words can still matter.' - Richard Flanagan, Booker Prize winning author of The Narrow Road to the Deep North
