Benny Andersen, currently Denmark's most popular poet, is virtually unknown in the United States. He is a poet of remarkable versatility, whose voices range from reflective to whimsical. His imagery is original and often surprising; his humor is delightful. To introduce Benny Andersen to English readers, Alexander Taylor has worked with the poet, selecting and translating poems from the eight books now available in Danish. The poems are presented here in their Danish versions and in English translations that capture the spontaneity and excitement of the originals. In both versions the poetry is evocative and refreshingly direct. The imagery is vivid, and the poet's inventive use of diction and syntax creates startling effects. Perhaps most characteristic of Andersen's work is the fusion of complex, often conflicting emotions within a single poem. Born in Copenhagen in 1929, Benny Andersen published his first book of poetry in 1960, to immediate public and critical acclaim. In addition to poetry, he has written a novel, short stories, children's books, filmscripts, television plays, and essays. He has received several awards. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Well, hello everyone. I'm so glad I have your attention. Now I'm pretty sure that there are quite a few little Benny's out there that haven't been discovered yet. But guess what? If little Benny can overcome adversity, so can you, because you can do anything you put your mind to. Trust me, I know, because I once was a troubled little Benny who traveled down the boulevard of broken dreams only to discover that I had some wonderful jewels to offer the world. All I had to do was look from within because that's where true beauty comes from. So no matter where you are in life, know that good thing can come from unfortunate situations. And always remember children, what you believe is what you will achieve, so reach for the stars

Benny Goodman: Wrappin' It Up presents swing fans, jazz scholars, and collectors with newly discovered recordings, broadcasts, and engagements of the famed clarinetist unearthed since Connor's Benny Goodman: Listen to His Legacy (Scarecrow, 1988). The listings of hundreds of previously unknown recordings will delight collectors, while jazz fans will enjoy Connor's intimate recollections of his friendship with Goodman, which bring a human dimension to an artist often known only for his music. Scholars will treasure the treatise on Goodman's arrangements now in the collections at the New York Public Library and Yale University. Wrappin' It Up also contains 28 rare photographs, many never published before, that span Goodman's career in both the recording and movie studio as well as a unique section covering over three hundred previously unknown broadcast recordings from 1935 to 1943. Also included are current prices for Goodman memorabilia, a schedule of Goodman's film and television appearances available on video, a necrology of Goodman's sidemen and associates, and indexes.

Over the 100 years since Benny Goodman's birth, interest in his life and music remains as intense as ever—yet there has been no new discographical information since 1996. Benny Goodman: A Supplemental Discography fills that gap, gathering materials uncovered since the last bio-discography of Goodman in 1996. The annotated discography, presented chronologically, updates some previously known information and adds nearly 100 new discoveries, including over 65 previously unknown radio broadcasts, airchecks, and films. Jessup presents new details about live appearances ranging from the mid-1980s back to the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, including an analysis of the controversial 1999 Sony reissue of that concert. Jessup also offers an essay detailing some of the difficulties of finding recordings in a digitally progressive age, as "new technology" can assist with—or hinder—collecting and evaluating this vintage music. An additional exploratory discography of smaller, collector-oriented labels describes nearly 400 reissues and collectible LPs, tapes, and CDs personally audited by Jessup and his associates. All 182 shows of the famous "Camel Caravan" radio series (1936-1939) are offered in print for the first time in an authoritative list. The volume concludes with a necrology of those associated personally or professionally with Benny Goodman who have passed away since 1996, and indexes by song title and musician make the material more accessible.

AI is changing the world at frightening speed. A bestselling author decides to find out more… ‘Something profound and utterly brilliant is going on… hilarious.’ THE TIMES Is ChatGPT the end of creative industries as we know them? An ethical quagmire from which there is no return? A threat to all our jobs, as we keep hearing on the news? Bestselling children’s author Andy Stanton has made a career out of writing differently – from the unconventional ‘hero’ of his bestselling Mr Gum series to his penchant for absurdist plots, his children’s books are anything but formulaic. When a friend introduces him to ChatGPT, the new large language chatbot, Andy is as sceptical as he is curious. Can this jumble of algorithms really mimic the spontaneity of human thought? Could it one day replace human authors like him for good? And are we soon to be ruled over by despotic robot overlords? He decides there’s only one thing for it – he must test this bot’s capabilities. Eventually, he settles on a prompt that will push the algorithm to its creative limits: ‘tell me a story about a blue whale with a tiny penis.’ Chaos ensues. What follows is a surprising and illuminating battle between Andy and ChatGPT that maybe, just maybe, might help us all understand AI a little bit better. Join Andy and his beleaguered AI lackey on a rollicking metafictional journey through the art of storytelling. Presenting his prompts and the AI-generated narrative alongside extensive commentary, Stanton provides a startling paean to the art of a good story and boundless human creativity. Hopeful and hilarious, Benny the Blue Whale provides a joyfully anarchic meditation on AI, literature and why we write. *** A WATERSTONES AND NEW SCIENTIST BEST BOOK OF 2023 ‘There’s no book like it. Scholarly, childish, fascinating and hilarious – one of our funniest writers dissects what it takes to build a story and what that tells us about being human. It’ll really make you think, if you can stop laughing.’ Chris Addison, co-creator of BREEDERS ‘Entertaining and alarmingly relevant, provocative and philosophically satisfying, it’s ultimately a profoundly human text.’ OBSERVER ‘A magnificent experiment by a perfect fool – deep and shallow and stupid and clever – the perfect use of AI (Andy Intelligence).’ Robin Ince, author of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING INTERESTED ‘Benny the Blue Whale is many things. It’s a fascinating discourse on the nature of language and storytelling. It’s a philosophical treatise on the possibilities of artificial intelligence. It’s a receptacle for obscenely hilarious jokes... A brilliant and beautiful cyborg: part human brain, part computational muscle. It’s a post-post-modern work of genius.’ Anthony McGowan, Carnegie Medal-winning author of LARK
