In 1997, after surviving a devastating, disfiguring accident, a six-year-old waif from Honduras was brought to Madison, Wisconsin, where University Hospital's world-class reconstructive surgeons took her into their care. In this true story, her mother tells how the adventurous and resilient young Brenda immediately embraced seven complete strangers, adopting them as her foster family with hardly a backward glance. As an expected one-year stay turned into two years, then three, and then forever, Brenda submitted to more than fifty surgeries, facing each one with courage and good humor. She endured hundreds of therapy sessions, unimaginable pain, setbacks, and complications. But she kept a curious, friendly, indomitable, and forgiving spirit--never pitying herself or becoming bitter, angry, or entitled. As hundreds of medical professionals cared for her over the years, she also ministered to them in profound and inspiring ways. The experiences recounted in this book are extraordinary, not only because of Brenda's unusual childhood, but because she herself is not, and never has been, ordinary.

As her condition continued to deteriorate, doctors were no help. I finally had to place her in a full time care facility.A forty year marriage shattered in less than twenty four hours. Brenda was declared to have suffered a permanent brain injury - cause, "Unknown." How do you cope? How do you stay sane? How do you keep your faith? This is a story of love, hope, and that crazy relationship between a man and a women. This is that story as originally told in random nightly blogs intended to inform friends and family of my wife's progress and relapses. It ended up being my way of answering all those very questions...and more. I wrote, not just about the reality of the situation but even more so; the reality of love and marriage, and women and the strange and wonderful relationships created in and between this assemblage. I wrote to stay sane. This is Brenda's story along with a meandering and often humorous tale of that crazy relationship we call love and marriage. Then one day, one Doctor did help... This story does have a happy ending.

Brenda Chamberlain was born in Bangor in 1912. She studied at the Royal Academy, but gave up painting temporarily for poetry during the Second World War, while she was living at Llanllechid, near Bethesda in Caernarfonshire. It was during this period that "The Caseg Broadsheets "was produced; the venture is described in "Alun Lewis and the Making of the Caseg Broadsheets" (1969). "The Green Heart" (1958) reflects both her time in Llanllechid and her experiences in Germany, which she visited in 1946. In 1962 she published her most important prose work, "Tide-Race," an evocation of life on the island of Barsdsey. Her only novel, "The Water Castle" (1964), again draws on her experiences in post-war Germany. In 1961 Chamberlain moved to the Greek island of Ydra, where she remained until the colonels' "coup "overthrew democracy in Greece. "A Rope of Vines" (1965) describes her life there. "Poems with Drawings "(1969) was published after her return to Bangor.""This work offers a lively account of Brenda Chamberlain's life together with a detailed analysis of her poems and prose. It draws on the strong recollections of many friends to sketch a portrait of this complex, sensitive and imaginative Welsh writer and artist.

Brenda - Story of an African queen is a pen picture of one of Africa's greatest singers. Compared with Billie Holliday and Nina Simone, Brenda's rise from the ghetto to continental superstar is a journey of luminous and troubled intensity.
