The Foundational Engineering Graphics: Principles and Applications material was developed by the collaborative work of multiple universities. The content is intended to encourage a deeper understanding of engineering graphics concepts with increased engagement to promote student mastery as well as self-efficacy. These materials provide enhanced relevanceof engineering graphics by demonstrating real-world examples of how engineering graphics can be applied. Through the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) project, online active learning modules were developed and integrated into introductory engineering graphics courses. Positive results of the active learning modules acting as a supplementalresource in the engineering graphics course led to the modules being transformed into a book format available to the public for use in building skills in engineering graphics. The 10 units available cover the foundational elements of sketching, engineering geometry, orthographic and pictorial projections, working drawings, the standardizations and annotations of dimensioning, assemblies, as well as section and auxiliary views. Along with content, each unit involves activities for practice in applying learned concepts, reflection questions for students to use in identifying examples seen in the world, as well as quiz questions for knowledge assessment.
The Design and Development Process

The Design and Development Process

This book explores a process perspective on design and development, grounded in research in design studies, engineering design and systems design. The design and development process is important---it creates all artificial products and systems and determines how well they address human needs. The process perspective set out in this book has value for design and development practice and education, and is in its own right a fascinating topic of investigation. This book expands on the foundations of a process perspective and discusses its realisation in many process models, theories and approaches that have been developed over the years. The chapters provide connected overviews of key concepts and introduce new conceptual frameworks to clarify relationships between the contributions discussed. Practical considerations and competencies required to realise the tangible benefits of a process perspective are also discussed. A unique aspect of this book is that itbrings together many perspectives on the design and development process: those that focus on individual design activity through to those that focus on large-scale development projects; those of research interest and those of practical interest; and those of relevance to design contexts ranging from human-centered design to engineering design and systems design. The chapter bibliographies collect carefully-selected recommendations for further reading on each topic discussed. The book additionally contains many figures presented in colour, visually reflecting each topic's relationship to the new organising frameworks that are introduced.

Thyroid Cytopathology

Thyroid Cytopathology

The evaluation of thyroid nodules by fine needle aspiration (FNA) is one of the most challenging tasks in all of cytopathology. A cytologist must understand the clinical presentation of thyroid diseases, their defining histopathologic and cytopathologic features, and even the intricacies of patient management. Drs. Clark and Faquin have provided a valuable framework for cytologists learning (and continuing to learn) this exacting discipline. Org- ized around a practical algorithm, the authors lay out a rational and concise approach toward acquiring the necessary skills for the cytologic diagnosis of thyroid nodules. The first edition, published in 2005, was a very welcome addition to the cytology literature. This new edition, with updated terminology for reporting thyroid FNA results, builds on the success of their approach. Why are we examining such challenging specimens? Clearly, the clinical need is there. Over 50% of adults have one or more thyroid nodules. Surgical excision of all nodules is certainly neither practical nor desirable. Enter FNA, a minimally invasive cellular sampling method that has proven to be a highly useful screening test for thyroid cancer. Because of it, thousands of patients with a benign diagnosis are spared unnecessary surgery every year, and those with cancer are reliably triaged for appropriate therapy.

Konstantinos P. Kavafis--known to the English-reading world as C. P. Cavafy--has been internationally recognized as an important poet and attracted the admiration of eminent literary figures such as E. M. Forster, F. T. Marinetti, W. H. Auden, George Seferis, and James Merrill. Cavafy's idiosyncratic poetry remains one of the most influential and perplexing voices of European modernism.Focusing on Cavafy's intriguing work, this book navigates new territories in critical theory and offers an interdisciplinary study of the construction of (homo)erotic desire in poetry in terms of metonymic discourse and anti-economic libidinal modalities. Panagiotis Roilos shows that problematizations of art production, market economy, and trafficability of erôs in diverse late-nineteenth and early twentieth-century European sociocultural and political contexts were re-articulated in Cavafy's poetry in new subversive ways that promoted an "unorthodox" discursive and libidinal anti-economy of jouissance.
C. P. Snow and the Struggle of Modernity

C. P. Snow and the Struggle of Modernity

John de la Mothe

pokkari
The condition of modernity springs from that tension between science and the humanities that had its roots in the Enlightenment but reached its full flowering with the rise of twentieth-century technology. It manifests itself most notably in the crisis of individuality that is generated by the nexus of science, literature, and politics, one that challenges each of us to find a way of balancing our personal identities between our public and private selves in an otherwise estranging world. This challenge, which can only be expressed as "the struggle of modernity," perhaps finds no better expression than in C. P. Snow. In his career as novelist, scientist, and civil servant, C. P. Snow (1905-1980) attempted to bridge the disparate worlds of modern science and the humanities. While Snow is often regarded as a late-Victorian liberal who has little to say about the modernist period in which he lived and wrote, de la Mothe challenges this judgment, reassessing Snow's place in twentieth-century thought. He argues that Snow's life and writings-most notably his Strangers and Brothers sequence of novels and his provocative thesis in The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution-reflect a persistent struggle with the nature of modernity. They manifest Snow's belief that science and technology were at the center of modern life.

C. P. Cavafy: The Unfinished Poems

A remarkable discovery, an extraordinary literary event: the never-before translated Unfinished Poems of the great Alexandrian Greek poet Constantine Cavafy, published for the first time in English alongside a revelatory new rendering of the Collected Poems--translated and annotated by the renowned critic, classicist, and award-winning author of The Lost. When he died in 1933 at the age of seventy, C. P. Cavafy left the drafts of thirty poems among his papers--some of them masterly, nearly completed verses, others less finished texts, all accompanied by notes and variants that offer tantalizing glimpses of the poet's sometimes years-long method of rewriting and revision. These remarkable poems, each meticulously filed in its own dossier by the poet, remained in the Cavafy Archive in Athens for decades before being published in a definitive scholarly edition in Greek in 1994. Now, with the cooperation and support of the Archive, Daniel Mendelsohn brings this hitherto unknown creative outpouring to English readers for the first time. Beautiful works in their own right--from a six-line verse on the "birth of a poem" to a longer work that brilliantly paints the autumn of Byzantium in unexpectedly erotic colors--these unfinished poemsprovide a thrilling window into Cavafy's writing process during the last decade of his life, the years of his greatest production. They brilliantly explore, often in new ways, the poet's well-established themes: identity and time, the agonies of desire and the ironies of history, cultural decline and reappropriation of the past. And, like the Collected Poems, the Unfinished Poems offers a substantial introduction and notes that provide helpful historical, textual, and literary background for each poem. This splendid translation, together with the Collected Poems, is a cause for celebration--the definitive presentation of Cavafy in English.
