If you'd like to know the Impressionist's magic and secrets of color, then this book is for you, no matter what age you are. Maybe you just like to 'color' just for sheer enjoyment of a childhood delight, or for those who want to learn how to see form and color, this book can open up a whole world of artistic pleasure. The images are from Candace's original oil paintings of Porches. Each drawing is in 'values' (meaning depth or darkness) of primary blue, so since form is made where the highlight meets the shadow, you can see form immediately. The highlights and shadows are for you to color. While coloring, you will get a taste of what it's like to follow the rules of nature, light and color. The challenge now rests with you to color hues, with intensity and more value. Magic will happen when you color over the blue sketches with the other 2 primary pigment colors, yellow and red. Secondary colors like green are made by adding yellow to the blue. Or purple is created by combining primary red with primary blue. Orange is made from yellow and red.

But can she still make it happen when she gets involved with a young thug chasing street dreams? Even with a good job, Candace is barely getting by, and raising her ten-year-old son is becoming more challenging by the day. Still, the quick-witted Candace has a plan. She's focused on a big promotion with a healthy salary increase that will put her right where she needs to be. Her strongest supporter is her buck-wild little sister Marci, who's head over heels in love with a married man. Her other support comes from Prince, her son's father, who is incarcerated but has her back no matter what. Still, not even the hustle she learned from him helps keep her straight on her paper chase. Then she meets Chris--a pretty boy seven years her junior. Candace doesn't know much about him, but his street-savvy swagger and seductive smile keep her heart racing. She should know better than to get involved with a man who's tied to the streets, but Candace can't bring herself to shake him off. And soon, Chris drags her down a road that threatens to end her career...and her life.

Candace Pert: Genius, Greed, and Madness in the World of Science
The story of maverick scientist Candace Pert, whose groundbreaking research introduced the world to the mind-body connection, opioid receptors, and peptide T, and her fight for recognition in a toxic healthcare system. Candace Pert stood at the dawn of three revolutions: the women's movement, integrative health, and psychopharmacology. A scientific prodigy, she was 30 years ahead of her time, preaching a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to healthcare and medicine long before yoga hit the mainstream and "wellness" took root in our vernacular. Her bestselling book Molecules of Emotion made her the mother of the Mind/Body Revolution, launching a paradigm shift in medicine. Deepak Chopra credits her with creating his career, and he said as much in his eulogy at her funeral. Candace began her career as an unbridled maverick. In 1972, as a 26-year-old graduate student at Johns Hopkins, she discovered the opiate receptor, revolutionizing her field and enabling pharmacologists to design new classifications of drugs from Prozac to Viagra to Percocet and OxyContin. The tragic irony of her breakthrough, touted as the first step to end heroin addiction, is that it helped spawn a virulent epidemic of drug dependence. Facing the largest public health crisis of the 21st century, Candace was incensed that the Hippocratic oath--"first, do no harm"--would succumb to greed, and as witness to this abuse of power, she was one of few scientists courageous enough to protest. Later, as Chief of Brain Biochemistry at the National Institutes of Health, Candace created Peptide T, the non-toxic treatment for HIV featured in Dallas BuyersClub. As the AIDS pandemic raged, triggering panic across Reagan-era America, the U.S. government poured massive amounts of money into finding a cure, sparking a battle among scientists for funding and power. Bested by rivals with competing drugs yet desperate to help, Candace went rogue, becoming a lynchpin in the black market for Peptide T. After a scandalous departure from her tenured position at the NIH, Candace launched a series of private companies with Michael Ruff, her second husband and collaborator. Na ve to the world of business, she was manipulated by investors keen to wrest control of her discoveries. But Candace too became tainted, believing that her noble ends would justify devious means. Like a mythic hero, she succumbed to a fatal flaw, and her greatest strengths--singularity of purpose and blind faith in her own virtuosity--would prove to be her undoing.

If you'd like to know the French Impressionist's magic and secrets of color, then this book is for you, no matter what age you are. The French Impressionists, inspired first by Eugene Chevrel's scientific research and later Ogden Rood color theories (1879) studied color as light by challenging themselves to paint from life as fast as the sun could rise, yet have as much realism as the new photograph. By quickly starting their plein aire paintings in values of blue paint and then adding hues and chroma with red and yellow paint they could achieve realism on canvas, directly from life, before the sun changed. I practice this theory today and I'm sharing it with you with my original oil paintings of Nantucket Island. Each Nantucket painting is in values, "the relative lightness or darkness of a color" of primary blue. Since form is made where the highlight meets the shadow, you can see the subject immediately. The challenge now rests with you to color hues with values and chroma. Magic will happen when you color over the blue painting with the other 2 primary pigment colors, yellow and red. Secondary colors like green are made by adding yellow to blue. Or purple is created by combining primary red with primary blue. Orange is made from yellow and red. chroma, or the intensity, is made by adding the opposite or complementary color. To make brown; mix red with its complementary hue, green. While coloring, you will see the rules of nature, light and color as explained, pop before your eyes, recreating my paintings by just using blue, red and yellow crayons.
