Carl Hagenbeck's Empire of Entertainments

Carl Hagenbeck's Empire of Entertainments

Eric Ames

The name of Carl Hagenbeck is as evocative in Europe as that of P. T. Barnum or Walt Disney in North America. Hagenbeck was the nineteenth century's foremost animal trader and ethnographic showman, known for his enormously popular displays of people, animals, and artifacts gathered from all corners of the globe. The culmination of Hagenbeck's commercial ventures was the opening of his Tierpark near Hamburg in 1907, a dazzling assemblage of constructed exotic environments inhabited by humans and animals.Eric Ames shows that Hagenbeck's various enterprises illustrate a significant evolution in popular culture. Earlier display forms that relied on the collection and presentation of "authentic" artifacts and living beings--the panorama, the zoological garden, the ethnographic collection--gave rise to the self-consciously synthetic forms of entertainment that we now associate with theme parks and films. This shift took place in the context of Hagenbeck's exhibitions, which were simultaneously the apotheosis of the collecting impulse and the germinating source for the creation of fictional spaces that rely for their effect on the spectator's imaginative engagement and interaction with the spectacle.Carl Hagenbeck's Empire of Entertainments locates Hagenbeck's myriad enterprises in the context of colonialism and nascent globalization; ethnography and anthropology; zoological gardens and international expositions; museum culture and visual spectacle; and consumerism and immersive entertainments. By tracing out the divergent lineages of themed environments, Ames offers a vivid reconstruction of the impulses and contradictions that lay behind the visual and display culture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries--a culture that forms the foundation of contemporary themed environments.Written in an accessible style with many wonderful images, this book draws on meticulous archival research and a wealth of primary sources not available in English. It is an original and entertaining interdisciplinary study that will appeal to readers interested in visual culture, popular culture, nineteenth-century German history, and film studies, as well as anyone intrigued by the history of such popular entertainments as zoos, museums, panoramas, world's fairs, cinema, theme parks, anthropological exhibitions, and Wild West Shows.

From his earliest work with glass to the stunning aerial panoramas of Maine islands that have gained him far-reaching fame, Eric Hopkins has consistently explored boundaries-of medium, of space, of vision. Nurtured on North Haven Island, Hopkins attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Montserrat College of Art and taught at the Haystack School of Crafts; an important mentor along the way was glass master Dale Chihuly. Taking to the air in the early 1980s, he developed those signature views coveted by collectors: energized renderings of coastal motifs, in which horizons bend and an archipelago of spruce-topped isles spreads across the canvas. Eric Hopkins: Above and Beyond is the first book to present a wide range of the breathtaking work of an eminent American artist.

Carl Gustav Armfelt and the Struggle for Finland During the Great Northern War
Charles XII’s planned conquest of Norway died with him at Fredriksten fortress on 30 November 1718 (OS), and the small Swedish-Finnish army simultaneously besieging Trondheim was ordered to return to Sweden. Setting off on the final stage across the mountains on New Year's Day 1719 the army was struck by a blizzard harsher than any in living memory, and an orderly withdrawal turned into what has become infamously known as the Carolean Death March. That army was commanded by General Carl Gustav Armfelt, one of the great and tragic figures of Finnish and Swedish history, hero of Finland's brave but ultimately hopeless struggle against Russia under Peter the Great during the Great Northern War 1700-21. This book draws on much primary source material to describe Armfelt’s military career. He was already an experienced soldier at the outbreak of the war having spent 11 years in the army of Louis XIV. The book describes his role in opposing the relentless march of the Russian forces in rolling back the eastern frontier of the Swedish empire from his Ingrian homeland through Finland and into Sweden itself. It concludes with the ill-fated Trondheim campaign during the empire’s final death throes and Armfelt’s final years in Finland after the war. The author, Eirik Hornborg (1879-1965), was one of Finland’s leading and most prolific historical writers. The book was originally published in 1953 and this translation, by a descendent of General Armfelt, provides the first comprehensive account in English of the Great Northern War in Finland.

Eric Walrond (1898–1966), author of Tropic Death (1926), remains a seminal but elusive figure in Harlem Renaissance and Caribbean diasporic literature. Although this collection remains his only major text, Walrond was in fact quite prolific, penning several more fictions and journalistic writings. Born in British Guiana (Guyana), he endured a peripatetic existence, beleaguered at every turn by those colonial crises and conflicts that constitute the central concerns of his fiction and journalism. Despite the enduring popularity of Tropic Death, there has been little sustained critical examination of Walrond’s achievement. In Eric Walrond: The Critical Heritage, Louis J. Parascandola and Carl A. Wade address this deficiency, fashioning the first critical anthology on Walrond. The ten essays in this volume employ a variety of literary, cultural and sociological approaches to illuminate the art and imagination of a writer celebrated as one of the most complex authors of the Harlem Renaissance. Included in the collection are two early commentaries by noted West Indian critic Kenneth Ramchand (his article is revised for this volume) and the late American scholar Robert Bone, as well as contributions by more contemporary voices. This comprehensive dissection of Walrond’s life and writings reveals an oeuvre that still has much to contribute to discussions about modern black literary and cultural studies.

Create an Organization That Runs on More than Intuition and Guesswork Most companies today have access to reams of data: marketing, supply chain, finance, as well as critical data about their workforce. Yet research shows that leaders at these companies lack the confidence to effectively integrate and use this data to compete more effectively in the marketplace. While executives know the results they need to achieve, they often fail to analyze the impact of their decisions on the firm, its processes, and its people. Enter Calculating Success, written by a trio of experts who have spent decades working with companies to more effectively apply human capital data to improve organizational outcomes. Calculating Success shows readers how they can take an analytical approach to both anticipate and address the changes required by a company's competitive environment, and drive superior performance. Using an innovative six-step framework and introducing new tools, the authors show executives how to make smarter strategic decisions by evaluating the data at their fingertips. The framework will help leaders: * Analyze the work that needs to be done and know how to structure it * Provide the right types of people to do it * Motivate them to engage in that work * Explore innovative ways to get the work done Full of detailed examples and case studies, Calculating Success will help you rethink the relationship of talent to business success. The result? A more motivated and cost-efficient workforce and a sustainable, systematic approach to acquiring talent and innovating how work gets done.
