Carole's Camel

Carole's Camel

Carole is left a rather unusual present - a camel called Umberto. It's great to ride him to school and everyone loves him, even if he is rather smelly. But looking after a real camel can cause a lot of problems. Perhaps Carole should find him a more suitable home.

‘An entertaining and lucid biography’ - We Are CultCarole Lombard was the very opposite of the typical 1930s starlet. A no-nonsense woman, she worked hard, took no prisoners and had a great passion for life. As a result, she became Hollywood’s highest-paid star. From the outside, Carole’s life was one of great glamour and fun, yet privately she endured much heartache. As a child, she was moved across the country, away from her beloved father. She then began a film career, only to have it cut short after a devastating car accident. After she picked herself back up, she was rocked by the accidental shooting of her lover; a failed marriage to actor William Powell; and the sorrow of infertility during her marriage to Hollywood’s King, Clark Gable. Carole marched forward, determined to be positive – only for her life to be cut short in a plane crash so catastrophic that pieces of the aircraft are still buried in the mountain today. In Carole Lombard, bestselling author Michelle Morgan tells the story of a woman whose remarkable life and controversial death continues to enthral.

Carole King’s Tapestry is both an anthemic embodiment of second-wave feminism and an apotheosis of the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriter sound and scene. And these two elements of the album’s historic significance are closely related insofar as the professional autonomy of the singer-songwriter is an expression of the freedom and independence women of King’s generation sought as the turbulent sixties came to a close.Aligning King’s own development from girl to woman with the larger shift in the music industry from teen-oriented singles by girl groups to albums by adult-oriented singer-songwriters, this volume situates Tapestry both within King’s original vision as the third in a trilogy (preceded by Now That Everything’s Been Said and Writer) and as a watershed in musical and cultural history, challenging the male dominance of the music and entertainment industries and laying the groundwork for female dominated genres such as women’s music and Riot Grrrl punk.

Texts by Andrew Cranston and Lucy Stein “The best painting shuts me up. I mean painting like Henri Matisse, or Pierre Bonnard, or Edvard Munch, or Paula Modersohn-Becker. Or Carole Gibbons. ” – Andrew Cranston 5b is honoured to publish the first monograph on the work of painter Carole Gibbons (b. 1935), one of the most distinctive and imaginative artists to have come out of Glasgow in the latter half of the 20th century. Her paintings burst with colour, hinting at narratives of both darkness and light. Rich in symbolism and narrative, the works fuse art-historical and mythological motifs with Gibbons' own lived experience, offering insights into a passionate and deeply-felt inner life. Despite being one of the first women to exhibit in Glasgow's Third Eye Centre (now the CCA), Gibbons' oeuvre remains largely unknown. Heralded in her early career by peers Alasdair Gray, Douglas Abercrombie, and Alan Fletcher, Gibbons' life and work were subsequently plagued by misfortune, tragedy, and prejudice. Aside from an influential period in Spain, Gibbons has spent most of her life working in her Finnieston home where she raised her son, Henry. It is the scene of her most potent works: still lifes charged with the influence of Braque and Kirkeby, rendered in layers of murky earth tones, iridescent pigment, and astonishing washes of radiant colour. Long overdue, the publication provides an eclectic survey of Gibbons' work, spanning various periods and subjects (mythological abstraction, self-portraits, the unconscious, domestic interiors) from large-scale canvases to works on paper, and includes texts by contemporary artists Lucy Stein and Andrew Cranston, which highlight the relevance of her legacy today.
