Re-interpreting the Relationship Between Water and Urban Planning
Africa is one of the most dynamic continents. It will play a key role in the coming decades in relation to the growth of cities, and environmental conditions will be of primary importance. The structural lack of water and sanitation infrastructure affects the development of Africa's growing urban environments. This book questions the relation between the wide-ranging fields of water and the urban discipline in the Sub-Saharan African context. In particular, it focuses on Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), a city where rapid urbanisation and high annual growth have led to increasing water demand and strained the water and sanitation systems. It examines the spaces water produces, the actors promoting various choices and solutions, the impact of different applied technologies, and the diverse sanitary conditions, focusing on their significance in the shape of the built environment and the urban planning practices and theory. As water occupies and creates spaces, this work tries to establish a relation among the spaces and the structure of the city itself, using infrastructure in the shape of networks that cross the city and on-site systems such as boreholes and latrines, to be considered a hybrid and potentially resilient system.

One of the most influential actors in spreading Islamist violence across the Sahel is Jama’at Nasr Al Islam Wal Muslimin (JNIM).This book provides the first systematic quantitative analysis of JNIM’s behavior by analyzing a 12-year database of JNIM’s attacks and the environment surrounding JNIM. This book leverages AI/ML predictive models to accurately predict almost 40 types of attacks using over 80 independent variables. This book describes a set of temporal probabilistic rules that state that when the environment in which the group operates satisfies some conditions, then an attack of a certain type will likely occur in the next N months. This provides a deep, easy to comprehend understanding of the conditions under which JNIM carries various kinds of attacks up to 6 months into the future. This book will serve as an invaluable guide to scholars (computer scientists, political scientists, policy makers). Military officers, intelligence personnel, and government employees, who seek to understand, predict, and eventually mitigate attacks by JNIM and bring peace to the nations of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger will want to purchase this book as well.

Healthcare education is a discipline in its own right, and while each profession has its own distinctive body of clinical knowledge, in educational terms there is much that all professions share. Yet recognition for the healthcare educator role is often lacking. A more collaborative approach to the professional development of healthcare educators is needed in response to this and also to the rise of interprofessional and multiprofessional teamworking. Not all healthcare professions have guidelines for training their educators, and those that do have slightly different standards, which can lead to misunderstanding and miscommunication. It is in the interest of all healthcare professions that their professional bodies work more closely together to consider how healthcare educators can be supported as a distinct body with unique expertise and skills. This monograph reports on an 18-month long research project - the Healthcare Educators' Values and Activities Study (HEVAS) - which aimed to establish the views of health professions educators, regulators, learned societies and professional bodies on the shared values and key activities undertaken by all healthcare professions educators. The project was funded by Health Education England and the Wales Deanery at Health Education and Improvement Wales.Nine central values and 24 activities were identified after a five-stage research process involving hundreds of participants drawn from over 20 healthcare professions. A variety of methods was used to establish a broad and clear consensus, demonstrating conclusively that healthcare professions educators share a strong set of values around the importance of professional healthcare education to safeguarding excellence in clinical practice and patient care, both now and for the future. While each profession develops its students, trainees and practitioners in its own way, the fundamental work of the healthcare educator is broadly similar, regardless of clinical specialty or profession. This new insight provides solid academic underpinning for multi-professional and interprofessional practice in healthcare education, and offers a new shared perspective on the future for healthcare education and healthcare educators.

Perdere qualcosa e trovare qualcos'altro. In una parola, crescere. Meravigliosamente, dolorosamente crescere. Al cappello aggiungiamo un nastro. Alla vita un anno. All'anima indicibili percezioni.

Trans Narrators examines a range of trans-authored novels, short stories and autobiographical narratives published after 2015 and develops a new methodology at the intersection of trans studies and narrative studies. The book identifies temporality, embodiment and reliability as key areas of investment for trans authors, and focuses specifically on the first-person narrator, showing how its formal characteristics impact how we understand gender and the body, the act of narrating the self, and the ability of marginalised subjects to speak and be visible. By creating a framework for reading trans narratives, this book responds to the urgency of promoting trans voices in a transnational context in which trans rights are at risk, as well as to a growing understanding of the role of narrative forms in shaping collective thought, politics and material conditions.

Visualizing cityscapes of Classical antiquity: from early modern reconstruction drawings to digital 3D models
The amount of 3D modelling applications in archaeology has increased enourmously over the last decade. 3D recording techniques allow researchers to quickly and accurately document archaeological evidence, and 3D reconstructions have created new possibilities to communicate the results to a larger public. In this latter case, however, numerous scholars have expressed their concern regarding the ethics of such digital representations, since they give prominence to a crystallized image of the past and do not account for the complexity of the archaeological record. The study presented here aims to make a practical contribution to a new understanding and use of 3D reconstructions, namely as ‘laboratories’ to test hypotheses and visualize, evaluate and discuss alternative interpretations. In order to do so, an analysis of visual reconstructions of the early and late modern period is presented first, followed by a discussion of current applications of 3D digital reconstructions, with a special focus on cityscapes. Lastly, a practical implementation of a research-driven, intellectually transparent and GIS-based 3D reconstruction is proposed for the urban site of Koroneia, in Boeotia, Central Greece. Specifically, the methodology developed in this work uses tools that are employed in geo-design and modern urban planning in an innovative way, integrating GIS with a rule-based modelling approach. With a strong focus on the automation and iteration of the reconstruction process, our 3D visualization provides an intuitive insight into hidden relationships and associations among data, and allows the creation and evaluation of alternative reconstruction hypotheses.

"While there’s no shortage of incredibly chic photos from Hepburn’s time in the spotlight here, original sketches of Holly Golightly’s costumes and jewels truly can’t be missed." — Natural Diamonds "This entrancing book portrays Hepburn's majesty both on and off screen, giving us a refined and informed look at the actress's life." — The Lady An unrivalled icon of grace and femininity, Audrey Hepburn is perhaps the most beloved star in the history of cinema. She enchanted millions of people with the sweetness of her smile and her inimitable style and was able to renew her image throughout the decades, anticipating fashion trends and establishing a new ideal of beauty. This volume retraces Hepburn's incredible rise, from the early years to her worldwide fame. The book is divided into four sections: ‘A Star is Born’, which follows Audrey’s first steps into the spotlight as a doe-eyed dancer; ‘The Golden Age’, how Audrey became the muse of Hubert de Givenchy and gave Hollywood a new ideal of elegance; ‘A Diva’s Style’, which touches on Breakfast at Tiffany’s, where Holly Golighty went down in the history of cinema with her sunglasses and little black dress, along with many others of Audrey’s later film work; and ‘Saving the Children’. This final section of the book puts great emphasis on her humanitarian work as UNICEF ambassador, on the side of all the children of the world. Both on screen and in real life, Audrey has remained faithful to the elegance of understatement and kindness, hidden behind her unforgettable smile.
Translating US Underground Comix in Italy

This book analyses 1960s-1970s US underground comix, a ‘counterculture’ art form that satirised mainstream values and taboos. The author observes comix in their multimodal components in the original English-language versions and in their Italian translations by unpacking the several layers of verbal and visual meaning-making. She then goes on to scrutinise translation and resemiotisation processes, including modifications, mitigations, and omissions, encompassing socio-historical and cross-cultural perspectives. The book argues that translation, meant to bridge two (counter-)cultures, served as a gatekeeper instead, zooming in on certain themes, while inadvertently overlooking or purposefully manipulating others, with an outcome close to censorship. The volume is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 summarises the aims and scope of the volume. Chapter 2 introduces comix as a subversive phenomenon. Chapter 3 illustrates the theoretical and methodological framework of analysis, based on semiotics and multimodality. Chapter 4 presents the corpus of Italian translations, which includes works translated between 1968 and 2022 by both mainstream and alternative publishers. In Chapters 5-8, Italian translations of comix dealing with such controversial themes as sex, drugs, political struggle, and religion are analysed, with qualitative observations of several translations of the same comix provided to highlight changing times, cultural frames, ideologies, editorial policies, and target audiences. Chapter 9 discusses the findings of these observations and maintains that, as a recursive translation strategy, seditious contents were mitigated, trivialised, or censored by adopting light-hearted frames so that potentially problematic contents could be left out. With its linguistic, translational, and intercultural analyses, this volume will be useful for researchers of linguistics, semiotics, translation, and comics studies.

Who is throwing melons and pumpkins from the highest tower in Pisa? It’s the mad scientist Galileo Galilei, confounding the old ideas of the Greeks around Aristotle. This strange old fellow does science everywhere, even in the taverns! When Galileo meets a whirling dervish, he comes up with an outrageous idea: what if, against all appearances, the earth wasn’t the center of the universe, but instead everything revolved around the sun? Around, around, he thinks . . . and begins to feel dizzy. An offbeat and giddy look at Galileo’s contributions to the history and philosophy of science, Galileo Spirals out of Control is an accessible and informative delight. At its most basic, philosophy is about learning how to think about the world around us. It should come as no surprise, then, that children make excellent philosophers! Naturally inquisitive, pint-size scholars need little prompting before being willing to consider life’s “big questions,” however strange or impractical. Plato & Co. introduces children—and curious grown-ups—to the lives and work of famous philosophers, from Descartes to Socrates, Einstein, Plato, and Wittgenstein. Each book in the series features an engaging—and often funny—story that presents basic tenets of philosophical thought alongside vibrant color illustrations.
