The Subject of Human Being

The Subject of Human Being

The Subject of Human Being presents a sweeping account of the nature of human existence. As a work of philosophical anthropology, the analysis ranges from the basic powers emerging from the mind, to our extraordinary psychological capacities, to the shared sociocultural worlds we inhabit. The book integrates different perspectives on social ontology from a selection of philosophers and theorists, whose advances toward understanding the relationship between individuals and society ought to revolutionize social theory as understood and practiced in the social sciences and humanities. Although grounded in critical realist philosophy of Roy Bhaskar and the social theory of Margaret Archer, the book also draws from philosophy of mind, phenomenology of consciousness, psychoanalytic theory, virtue ethics, and personalism to support and extend its arguments. Four elements of human existence are examined: the nature of consciousness, agency, subjectivity, and the social world. Thus, it addresses related issues of power, the agent-structure problem, the formation of beliefs and desires, human universals, and human rights. Portraying a unified social theory that is materialist, realist, dialectical, and centered on emergence, and offering a comprehensive and progressive theory of human being, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of critical realism, philosophy, and the social sciences.

'Remarkably beautiful and pastoral' JUSTIN WELBY, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY 'Brimming with wisdom and humanity' DAME SARAH MULLALLY, DBE, BISHOP OF LONDON Struggling with God gets right to the heart of a great predicament for many Christians. When it feels as if our struggles are overwhelming - and our capacity for faith and hope and love is diminished - how is it possible to maintain, never mind nourish, our relationship with God? The truth, as this deeply compassionate volume reminds us, is that Jesus came alongside people wrestling with mental health problems. Many familiar conditions, such as anxiety and depression, and more severe ones, including bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia, are addressed by the authors here. Dispelling common myths and misconceptions, they explore the impact such mental health disorders can have on individual Christians, Church and society.. Each chapter includes biblical reflections relevant to its theme, prayers, questions to facilitate individual/group study, and pointers to further reading. In short, the book presents a Christian vision of spiritual and mental wellbeing through prayerful struggling with God.

This anthology comprises five of the best plays from VAULT 2018, London's biggest and most exciting arts festival. Young men are dying and everyone assumes they're just casualties of London's chemsex scene. Everyone, that is, but Anthony, who is determined to investigate. Tumulus by Christopher Adams is a chilling, queer play-noir set amongst the shadowy hills of Hampstead Heath. Critically acclaimed during its run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Lucy Burke's Glitter Punch - set in Greater Manchester - charts a troubling new relationship between mysterious John and sixteen-year-old Molly, a love that will change their lives forever. `Powerful' (The Stage). Set in a Wigan taxi, Burkas and Bacon Butties by Shamia Chalabi and Sarah Henley is a heart-warming comedy abouttaxi-driver Ashraf and his twenty-something daughter, Shaz, as they negotiate the ups and downs of living in a mixed-culture family. When bereaved mother Mary finds a disembodied arm, a conspiracy builds: maybe her child isn't quite so dead after all. Shortlisted for Soho Theatre's Tony Craze Award, Sami Ibrahim's Wind Bit Bitter, Bit Bit Bit Her is an enthralling monologue about love and loss. The Strongbox by Stephanie Jacob is a story of domestic servitude and abuse of power, as authoritarian Kat, her ageing mother, Ma, and their teenaged slave, Maudie, jostle for power - and affection - in their dilapidated London home.

Chris Neil--or Christopher, as his mother, Bonnie, called him--grew up with the ambition and desire to be an NHL hockey player. Through grit and determination, he achieved his goal and left an indelible mark on the Ottawa Senators franchise. Christopher spent many hours as a youngster in Ron and Cathy Pegg's home, providing the author with personal, first-hand knowledge of Neil the hockey player and the man. That friendship continues to this day. In this engaging biography, you'll meet the Neil family and the personalities from the world of hockey that guided and formed Chris Neil throughout his life--a life of athletics, community involvement, and faith. Christopher played over a thousand games in the NHL, all as a member of the Ottawa Senators. He became one of just over fifty players in the history of the league to play a thousand games with one team. The one thousandth game was played in Los Angeles, with his wife, Cait, and all the members of the Pegg family present. Christopher is not the final word on Neil's career, as he continues to serve the hockey community off the ice, but it does tell the tale of a life well lived so far and will inspire hockey fans and people of faith alike.
