The Support Verses: Earliest Sayings of the Buddha is Christopher Carter Sanderson's uniquely poetic and practical translation of The Dhammapada. Sanderson, working from Pali and Sanskrit sources, aims to artistically transmit the essence of Buddha's sayings in a form useful for meditation. Freely cast in a flexible, idiomatic and often catchy iambic pentameter, in tone ranging as needed from the academic to the profane, these verses combine musicality with a refreshing directness. This new creative realization joins a galaxy of inspired translations of this great work to offer additional artistic insight and spiritual utility.
Intellectual Property in the Digital Age

Intellectual Property in the Digital Age

What exactly do policymakers and journalists mean when they refer to the "information age"? What bearing do the "problems" they describe and the "solutions" they offer have on current global realities? Specifically, what does the Euro-American concept of intellectual property mean in a global context? Why is the idea of electronic commerce so difficult to "export"? These questions which clearly identify issues of crucial importance for the coming decades of human history are given full weight, stripped of ideology, in this book, based on the papers presented at a seminar sponsored by the Macau Institute of European Studies (IEEM) in June 2000. Although there are no clear answers, the accounts and analyses presented here provide a wealth of detail that comes as close as we can expect at this date to the facts of the case. The focus is on East Asia, Greater China in particular, an area which (most social theorists agree) offers the most revealing social context for the examination of emerging global trends in this field.

The book provides the reader with a complete picture of international and regional developments in the area of biotechnology, plant variety protection and patent protection (these topics feature very prominently in the current discussion on the future direction of the TRIPs Agreement), as well as the scope of the patent right in respect of claims of invention and research and development and places these developments in the context of international trade and enforcement mechanism that members of the WTO are required to incorporate. Part IV gives an outlook on possible future development and mechanisms for the protection of incremential innovation that are feasible for developing countries and small industries. The book therefore covers the edges of the current IP system (with plant varieties and utility models) as well as the more mainstream discussion in the developed nations. All topics are of international relevancy, while they are also of relevance and interest to Asia. The book is part of the Max Planck Series on Asian Intellectual Property Law.

Breakpoint is a collection of poems that speaks to a nation in crisis. Its poetry is commentary on a country that was built on the promise of the American Dream, and yet is now led by a president who, in 2015, declared that "The American Dream is dead "It explores the nightmares of Trump's America: the rise of white supremacy, the separation of 5,400 migrant children from their families, the resurgence of virulent racism and the rise in hate crimes against Muslims, Jews, and people of color. These poems explore the promise our forefathers made of an American Dream - a dream enshrined in the words of the Declaration of Independence, on the base of the Statue of Liberty and in the hearts of immigrants who have come to America in search of that Dream. This is a call to action, to protest, to participate and to break the silence of indifference--a silence we can no longer afford if we want the promises of America's past to be fulfilled in the present, and to guarantee American's future.

In March 1996 the Society of Experimental Biology (UK) together with two other international scientific societies, the Australian and New Zealand Society for Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (formally the American Society for Zoology) joined forces with Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg to produce one of the first fully electronic online, peer-reviewed biological journals, Experimental Biology Online. The present product represents the fruits of this joint venture and encapsulates Volumes 1 and 2 of the journal. This will be an ongoing series such that an archival version of the journal will be available to all libraries as well as the on-line version. At the outset this was "new land" for all concerned but the launching of a journal which would cover experimental biology in terms of Animal, Cell and Plant topics was daunting but we all felt that the use of electronic media and the internet would be ideally suited to this purpose.

Security and Risk Technologies in Criminal Justice takes students through the evolution of risk technology devices, processes, and prevention. This seminal text unpacks technology’s influence on our understanding of governance and social order in areas of criminal justice, policing, and security. With a foreword by leading criminologist, Kevin Haggerty, the collection consists of three sections that explore the impact of big data, traditional risk practices, and the increased reliance on technology in criminal justice. Eight chapters offer diverse examples that are linked by themes of preventative justice, calculability of risk, the theatre and reality of technology, and the costs of justice. With both national and international appeal, this vital resource is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students in criminology, police studies, or sociology.

This book covers the fundamentals of drilling and reservoir appraisal for petroleum. Split into three sections, the first looks at the basic principles of well engineering in terms of planning, design and construction. It then goes on to describe well safety, costs and operations management. The second section is focussed on drilling and core analysis, and the laboratory measurement of the physico-chemical properties of samples. It is clear that efficient development of hydrocarbon reservoirs is highly dependent on understanding these key properties, and the data can only be gathered through a carefully conducted core-analysis program, as described. Finally, in the third section we look at production logging, an essential part of reservoir appraisal, which describes the nature and the behaviour of fluids in or around the borehole. It describes how to know, at a given time, phase by phase, and zone by zone, how much fluid is coming out of or going into the formation. As part of the Imperial College Lectures in Petroleum Engineering, and based on a lecture series on the same topic, Drilling and Reservoir Appraisal provides the introductory information needed for students of the earth sciences, petroleum engineering, engineering and geoscience.

SCN2A encodes a voltage-gated sodium channel (designated NaV1.2) vital for generating neuronal action potentials. Pathogenic SCN2A variants are associated with a diverse array of neurodevelopmental disorders featuring neonatal or infantile onset epilepsy, developmental delay, autism, intellectual disability and movement disorders. SCN2A is a high confidence risk gene for autism spectrum disorder and a commonly discovered cause of neonatal onset epilepsy. This remarkable clinical heterogeneity is mirrored by extensive allelic heterogeneity and complex genotype-phenotype relationships partially explained by divergent functional consequences of pathogenic variants. Emerging therapeutic strategies targeted to specific patterns of NaV1.2 dysfunction offer hope to improving the lives of individuals affected by SCN2A-related disorders. This Element provides a review of the clinical features, genetic basis, pathophysiology, pharmacology and treatment of these genetic conditions authored by leading experts in the field and accompanied by perspectives shared by affected families. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

America's Overseas Garrisons

America's Overseas Garrisons

America's overseas Garrisons analyses the political and social problems, which arise when American forces are stationed in other countries. The United States, although critical of the British Empire during the Second World War, found itself playing an imperial role in the post-war era in order to safeguard the security of the west. In building up a global security system, with American troops in Europe, the Far East, the Atlantic, and the Caribbean and the Pacific, the United States came to resemble the former colonial powers. But whereas the colonial empire had established garrisons on territory acquired by force, the United States was obliged to negotiate basing rights for their troops by negotiating with independent sovereign states. The result was a variety of arrangements with different host nations, in which the American position, and the use America could make of her troops overseas, was critically dependant of America's political and historical relationship with the country concerned. The United States has based more troops overseas than any of the colonial empires. However, the terms of the leasehold empire have imposed severe constraints on America's freedom of manoeuvre.
