Every year over a million people pack the streets of London's Notting Hill for Carnival, but as the carnival-goers soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the festival, few appreciate that its founder died in poverty on Christmas Eve in the bitterly cold winter of 1964, the end of a life dogged by struggle and illness. Claudia Jones: A Life in Exile is the first book to chart the life and work this visionary and pioneer. Born in Trinidad in 1915, Claudia Jone's family moved to Harlem, New York, where the young Claudia became a leading figure in Communist and black politics. Forced into exile in Britain in 1955, Jones arrived in London penniless and friendless. She became active in civil rights campaigns amongst the new West Indian communities established in the capital and launched an annual Carnival to showcase the talents and culture of the Afro-Caribbean community. Claudia Wieser's artistic practice draws from history, architecture, and design, often playing with time and space. Influenced by artists who embraced spirituality--such as Hilma af Klint, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee--she considers abstraction and physiological experience in her installations. The Berlin-based artist's practice includes hand-painted ceramics, carved wooden sculptures, tiled mirrored works, drawings, and site-specific wallpaper with images mined from her vast archive. Claudia Wieser: Generations highlights her first solo exhibition in the United States held at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and the Smart Museum of Art. Alongside images of her work, this publication features essays by curators Rachel Adams and Jennifer Carty and three interviews conducted by Maggie Taft, Igor Siddiqui, and Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy.

MoMA PS1 presents the fourth iteration of Greater New York. Recurring every five years, the exhibition has traditionally showcased the work of emerging artists living and working in the New York metropolitan area. Considering the “greater” aspect of its title in terms of both geography and time, Greater New York. begins roughly with the moment when MoMA PS1 was founded in 1976 as an alternative venue that took advantage of disused real estate, reaching back to artists who engaged the margins of the city. In conjunction with the exhibition, MoMA PS1 is publishing a series of readers that will be released throughout the run of the exhibition. These short volumes revisit older histories of New York while also inviting speculation about its future, highlighting certain works in the exhibition and engaging a range of subjects including disco, performance anxiety, real estate and newly unearthed historical documents.
