The Bodhrán

The Bodhrán

Colin F. Harte

University of Tennessee Press
2020
nidottu
In the past fifty years, the bodhrÁn, or traditional Irish circular frame drum, has undergone a rapid evolution in development. Traditionally, it is a shallow drum ranging from ten to twenty-six inches in diameter, covered in goatskin on the top (or drum) side and open on the other. Unlike any other instrument associated with Irish traditional music, the bodhrÁn has been dramatically altered by its confrontation with modern instrument design, performance techniques, and musical practice. Colin Harte's The BodhrÁn: Experimentation, Innovation, and the Traditional Irish Frame Drum presents a definitive history of the bodhrÁn from its early origins to its present-day resurgence in Irish American folk music. The bodhrÁn has global roots and bears many characteristics of older drums from northern Africa and the Middle East. Harte picks up on these basic similarities and embarks on an engaging tour of the instrument's historical and organological development, gradual evolution in playing styles, and more recent history of performative practice. Drawing from a host of interviews over a multi-year period with participants primarily located in Europe and North America, this work provides a platform for multiple perspectives regarding the bodhrÁn. Participants include bodhrÁn makers, professional performers, educators, amateur musicians, historians, and enthusiasts. Growing out of rich ethnographic interviews, this book serves as the definitive reference for understanding and navigating the developments in the bodhrÁn's history, organology, performance practices, and repertoire.
Matagam Pagwa #1: Defender Down and Bleak Realities
Matagam PagwaThe history of explorer Matagam Pagwa's search for the Milky Way Galaxy and a planet safe from war for people to live circulates among the space travelers.Defender DownDefender Down is the first book in the Matagam Pagwa Series. It is the story of the crash of the battle cruiser Defender on the planet of Yovex. Yovex is suspected to be the origin and cause of the legend of the feared Ghost Ships. At great risk to their lives, six crew members rode the Defender down to the surface. When they first made contact with the Indigenous species, they were mystified at their physiology."When the battle cruiser Defender skidded to a stop on the surface of Yovex, Captain Zeff asked, 'Everyone alright' After they answered affirmatively, he unbuckled, stood up and looked around at the disorder which was once the bridge of his battle cruiser. The others got to their feet and joined him surveying the damage as Zeff asked the EXO, "Did everyone get off?""'As far as I know.' Dr. O'Casey replied. "We're the only ones crazy enough to ride this ship down. We should all be dead or committed.''Right now, committed does not sound that bad.'"Bleak RealitiesBleak Realities is second book of the Matagam Pagwa Series. It is the story of the Black Sentry's duty, betrayal, and sacrifices on the Tweed planet of Vulzar. The Black Sentry receives invaluable help from the local inhabitants: the Elros, the Trirobs, and the Orebs. Elros are a genetically engineered cross between elephants and a rhinoceros. Trirobs are genetically crossed between Weasels and Mongooses. The Orebs are large orange-eyed birds that were genetically crossed from two species of eagles and two species of bats."When the Resolute Bay entered Vulzar's atmosphere about three thousand feet above the planet, the clamshells containing weapons, ordinance, and supplies were kicked out of the rear hangars. As they began their descent toward the planet, the members of the Black Sentry jumped from their hangers in glide suits feeling the air rushing against their bodies and helmets. Their objective was to scrutinize the dense vegetation as they aimed for their designated drop zones."Suddenly pieces of red hot jagged debris took its toll cause severed and torn body parts to plummet to the ground. Their transport ship Resolute Bay had exploded above them."
Property and the German Idea of Freedom: From the End of the Thirty Years' War to the Eve of the French Revolution in Germany
This book offers a new interpretation German law and politics during the era between the Thirty Years' War and the French Revolution. Liberal ideas of freedom and equality were prototyped in Germany in property law: through the free disposition of estates, freedom from taxation and other extractions, and free use of paper money. Civil liberty, ideas about equality, and restrictions on arbitrary state power were real, recognized, and meaningful. These freedoms were enjoyed by all classes of Germans. They were thought to have been built atop Germans' ancient heritage of freedom and a federalist imperial constitution which inspired Montesquieu and the American Founders. Driving these trends were ideas about political economy, enlightened reform, practical problem solving, as well as forces of supply and demand in everything from the market for books to the market for justice. This book places the story of early modern German freedom close by the side of more familiar stories for England, North America, France, and the Netherlands.
The Essence of Chromatography

The Essence of Chromatography

The knowledge base of chromatography continued to expand throughout the 1990s owing to its many applications to problems of contemporary interest in industry, life and environmental sciences. Organizing this information into a single text for a diverse group of scientists has become increasingly difficult. The present book stemmed from the desire to revise Chromatography Today, written by the same author with Salwa K. Poole, and published in 1991. This title is considered to be one of the definitive texts on chromatography. It was soon realized however, that a simple revision would not provide the desired result of a contemporary picture of the practice of chromatography at the turn of the century. The only workable solution was to start afresh, maintaining the same general philosophy and concept for Chromatography Today where possible, while creating essentially a new book. The format of the new book is modular, with extensive cross-references to permit rapid location of related material using different separation concepts. Important features are extensive tabulation of essential data for performing separations and an extensive bibliography to the most recent literature. This title is intended as a suitable text for graduate level courses in the separation sciences and as a self-study guide for professional chromatographers wishing to refresh their background in this rapidly expanding field. The Essence of Chromatography presents a comprehensive survey of modern chromatography and is an effective replacement for Chromatography Today.
Adaptive Filters and Equalisers

Adaptive Filters and Equalisers

sidottu
The work presented in this text relates to research work in the general area of adaptive filter theory and practice which has been carried out at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Edinburgh since 1977. Much of the earlier work in the department was devoted to looking at the problems associated with the physical implementation of these structures. This text relates to research which has been undertaken since 1984 which is more involved with the theoretical development of adaptive algorithms. The text sets out to provide a coherent framework within which general adaptive algorithms for finite impulse response adaptive filters may be evaluated. It further presents one approach to the problem of finding a stable solution to the infinite impulse response adaptive filter problem. This latter objective being restricted to the communications equaliser application area. The authors are indebted to a great number of people for their help, guidance and encouragement during the course of preparing this text. We should first express our appreciation for the support given by two successive heads of department at Edinburgh, Professor J. H. Collins and Professor J. Mavor. The work reported here could not have taken place without their support and also that of many colleagues, principally Professor P. M. Grant who must share much of the responsibility for instigating this line of research at Edinburgh.
Knossos: From First to Second Palace

Knossos: From First to Second Palace

This volume presents the pottery from a series of deposits excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in the palace at Knossos and assigned by him to the last part of the Middle Bronze Age or Middle Minoan III. The substantial architectural modifications seen in this period are examined along with stratigraphy to give proper context to the pottery deposits. Middle Minoan III was the time when Knossos appeared to expand its reach across Crete: from the First Palace Period, when palaces at Malia and Phaistos rivalled Knossos, to the Second Palace Period, when seemingly they diminished and other smaller palaces were built. These changes unfolded over the course of the Middle Minoan III period, divided by Evans into two sub-phases, MM IIIA and MM IIIB. He used many palatial deposits to define these phases. However, he did not present the pottery, stratigraphy and architecture in full, leading eventually to some ambiguity over the status of the period. This detailed study revisits more than a dozen of these contexts, to provide a more solid footing for the phasing and use of the Middle Minoan III palace. The investigation confirms that it is possible to distinguish not only between MM IIIA and MM IIIB, but also between early and late MM IIIA; this distinction enables a more nuanced understanding of the significant changes in architecture and material culture that were taking place. Furthermore, ceramic analysis highlights some of the functions of the palace at this time, with a plethora of conical cups and very few fine tablewares suggesting particular kinds of feasting; and a large number of imported transport and storage wares from off-island locales in the Aegean, such as the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and coastal Anatolia, pointing to a level of connectivity and exchange not previously recognised. This volume demonstrates that much new information can be extracted from legacy material excavated more than a century ago, through the use of a methodology that integrates ceramic, stratigraphic and architectural evidence.

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is widely used particularly for pharmaceutical and food analysis. While there are a number of books on the qualitative identification of chemical substances by TLC, the unique focus here is on quantitative analysis. The authors describe all steps of the analytical procedure, beginning with the basics and equipment for quantitative TLC followed by sample pretreatment and sample application, development and staining, scanning, and finally statistical and chemometric data evaluation and validation. An important feature is the coverage of effect-directed biological detection methods. Chapters are organized in a modular fashion facilitating the easy location of information about individual procedural steps.
