Featuring 155 color photographs and illustrations, Native American Weapons surveys weapons made and used by American Indians north of present-day Mexico from prehistoric times to the late nineteenth century, when European weapons were in common use. Over thousands of years the weapons were developed and creatively matched to their environment--highly functional and often decorative, carried proudly in tribal gatherings and in war.
First published in 1978, Social Work is concerned with relating social methods and objectives to political ideology. Social work grew out of the fertile tradition of mainstream Liberal radicalism in the nineteenth century, and to appreciate its largely implicit contemporary value framework it is essential to analyse the ideologies of ‘Conservatism’ and ‘social democracy’ which have dominated Britain in the twentieth century. The links between social work methods and aspirations and political ideology are thus explored in some detail. A key argument which closely involves social work relates to the potential for social change within the existing institutional structures. The question of ‘Legitimation’ is thoroughly examined in this context from all viewpoints, and the conclusions for social work development are discussed. This book will be of interest to students of social work, sociology and political science.

The fourth edition of this bestselling text has been rigorously updated to reflect major new discoveries and concepts since the previous edition in 2019. Many sections have been extensively revised with the help of co-authors with expertise in specific fields. This new edition reflects important new findings in Marine Microbiology revealed by further development of high-throughput sequencing, omics and single-cell technologies which have led to major advances in understanding of how the activities, interactions, and functions of marine microbes affect ecosystem processes and global biogeochemical cycles. Novel pedagogy is designed to aid students’ interest and understanding and encourage exploration of current high-profile research topics, including the physiology of planktonic microbes and their role in ocean processes; the impacts of rising CO2 levels and climate change on microbial community structure and ocean processes; the evolution of viruses, organelles, and eukaryotic life; interactions of microbes with plastic pollution; and emerging diseases of marine life and their control. This is the only textbook addressing such a broad range of topics in the specific area of Marine Microbiology, now a core topic within broader Marine Science degrees.

The new and updated eighth edition of Political Geography once again shows itself fit to tackle a frequently and rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. It retains the intellectual clarity, rigour, and vision of previous editions based upon its world-systems approach and is complemented by the perspective of feminist geography. The book successfully integrates the complexity of individuals with the complexity of the world-economy by merging the compatible, but different, research agendas of the co-authors.This edition explores political geography within the context of US–China competition, Russia’s war with Ukraine, global climate change, new technologies, and challenges to democracy. It advances the discussion from the previous editions on the dynamics of the capitalist world-economy and the constant tension between the global scale of economic processes and the territorialization of politics in the current context of geopolitical change. The chapters have been updated with new examples – new sections on global climate change, populism, and the growing threat of global war. The book offers a framework to help students make their own judgements of how we got where we are today, and what may or should be done about it.Political Geography remains a core text for students of political geography, geopolitics, international relations, and political science, as well as more broadly across human geography and the social sciences.
