In a thought-provoking approach, Maria Georgiadou devotes to Constantin Carathéodory all the attention such a personality deserves. With breathtaking detail and the appropriate scrutiny she elucidates his oeuvre, life and turbulent political/historical surroundings: descending from the Greek élite of Constantinople, Carathéodory graduated from the military school of Brussels, became engineer at the Assiout dam in Egypt and finally dedicated a life of effort to mathematics and education. He studied and embarked on an international academic career, haunted by wars, catastrophes and personal tragedies. Over the last years of his life, he stayed in Munich despite World War II, an ambiguous decision upon which the author sheds unprecedented light. Als j discher Autor erhielt er nach 1933 Publikationsverbot, seine B cher durften nicht mehr neu aufgelegt werden. Konstantin Andrejewitsch Somow (Constantin Somoff) (1869-1939) war ein russischer Maler und Grafiker. Er wuchs in Sankt Petersburg auf. In der Zeit von 1888 bis 1897 studierte er an der Petersburger Kunstakademie. Nach seinem Abschluss ging er nach Paris, wo er in den folgenden zwei Jahren an einer Privatakademie studierte. Nach seiner R ckkehr aus Paris lie er sich 1899 in Sankt Petersburg nieder. 1913 wurde er ordentliches Mitglied der Petersburger Kunstakademie. 1918 wurde er Professor der Petrograder Staatlichen Kunsthochschule. 1923 verlie Somow Russland. Zwei Jahre sp ter lie er sich in Frankreich nieder, wo er 1939 in Paris starb. Seine Werke, in der Hauptsache Portr ts und Landschaftsgem lde, sind heute in der Tretjakow-Galerie sowie im Russischen Museum ausgestellt.

On the occasion of the centennial anniversary of Constantin Meunier's death, the contributions by Sura Levine and Marjan Sterckx examine the importance of Meunier for Leuven, where he taught at the Arts Academy from 1887 until 1897 and lived from 1887 until 1894. As a complement, four authors from various disciplinary backgrounds address the actuality of Meunier's social realist thought today. Virginie Devillez investigates the possibilities of a social realist art after the debacle of socialist realism, focussing on the Belgian 20th century artistic context and the work of contemporary Belgian artists and filmmakers such as the frères Dardenne. Hilde Van Gelder specifically zooms in on the possibilities of making a social or critical realist art, comparing closely the work of Meunier and Sekula. Human rights specialist Eva Brems discusses the impact of contemporary globalisation on the current viability of social rights. Labour law expert Marc De Vos screens the jurisdictional actuality of social realist thought today, especially in respect to issues such as pensions and the greying of society.
Den 15 september 2005 mottog den rumänska kvinnan Irina Manescu medaljen Righteous Among the Nations i Berlin av den israeliska staten för sin farfars insatser under andra världskriget. Han tilldelades priset postumt för att ha medverkat till att 51 000 judar undgått koncentrationsläger. Mellan 1931 och 1945 arbetade han som rumänsk generalkonsul i Berlin och diplomat i Bukarest. Han lyckades gång efter gång snuva nazisterna. Han fixade fram papper, legitimationer och skyddspass, och var under flera år liksom spindeln i kontaktnätet. Den hittills okände halvsvenske mannens insatser är, utan att ta udden av Raoul Wallenbergs bedrifter, någonting som slår det mesta. På israeliska och amerikanska webbsidor jämförs han med Oscar Schindler och Folke Bernadotte. Hans morfar var Brännvinskungen L.O. Smith och hans pappa var turkisk prins. Han växte upp på Blasieholmen, gick i Beskowska skolan och bodde under några år på Strandvägen i Stockholm. Tänk en riktig hjälte och ingen tycks känna till honom och hans bedrifter. I januari 1950 avled han i Bukarest, fem dagar innan den rumänska hemliga polisen Securitate knackade på för att föra bort honom. Inte en notis om hans bedrifter i svenska tidningar. Hans namn var Constantin Karadja.
Publication at the occasion of the re-opening of the museum Constantin Meunier. This museum is located in Ixelles in the house-cum-studio of artist, painter, sculptor and draughtsman Constantin Meunier (1831-1905). The items on display trace more specifically the evolution of the master between 1875 and 1905, this "second life" in his own words, during which his Realist talent focused more on the social and industrial aspects of Belgium, first through painting and drawing and then, from 1885 onwards, with his return to sculpture to become one of the greatest artists of the genre. Paintings like The Broken Pot are echoed by important sculptures like The Hammerer, a whole people of plaster and bronze that deeply marked his day and continued to influence Realist art well into the first decades of the 20th century. History of the Collection Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) had this beautiful house-cum-studio built towards the end of his life. Sheltering an extensive collection of over 700 works, the house was acquired by the Belgian state in 1936 and opened to the public in 1939. Attached to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and subsequently renovated, it has since 1986 presented a selection of about 150 works and documents.

Sodann werden seine innen- und aussenpolitischen sowie die militarischen Massnahmen untersucht, die zum Teil weitreichende Auswirkungen hatten und schon in der Antike heftige Kritik erfahren haben. Schliesslich soll dem Leser eine Vorstellung von der Schwierigkeit vermittelt werden, aus den sparlichen und oft widerspruchlichen Aussagen der Quellen ein Bild von den Lebensumstanden, den Taten und der Personlichkeit dieses hochberuhmten Herrschers zu gewinnen.
