South After Gettysburg: Letters of Cornelia Hancock, 1863-1865 is a collection of letters written by Cornelia Hancock, a young woman who served as a nurse during the American Civil War. The letters cover the period from 1863 to 1865, and document Hancock's experiences working in hospitals and on the front lines of battles in Virginia and North Carolina. The book provides a unique perspective on the war, as Hancock was one of the few women who served in this capacity. Her letters offer insight into the daily life of a Civil War nurse, as well as the physical and emotional toll that the war took on those who served. The book also includes historical context and annotations to help readers better understand the events and people mentioned in the letters. Overall, South After Gettysburg is an important historical document that sheds light on a little-known aspect of the Civil War and the role of women in it.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Bored, she is sent to play "outside." She discovers a hidden tree house and a boy her own age... "Do you really live here all alone?" she asks. "No I live here with my inventions. Come and take a look inside." Inside Cornelia is introduced to a magical machine. A jungle machine! Nora Brech's gothic illustrations are packed with imaginative details and perspectives. Her pictures play with references to classical children's literature, and the book's large format is fully utilized when Cornelia climbs up the tall trees; the drawings quite simply give the reader butterflies. Cornelia Parker’s art is about destruction, resurrection and transformation. Always driven by curiosity, she reconfigures familiar objects to question our relationship with the world, and engage with the important issues of our time, be it violence, ecology or human rights. This landmark publication charts Cornelia Parker’s career to date, from early work to the iconic installations Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View 1991, for which she had a garden shed blown up, and Perpetual Canon 2004, made up of brass band instruments, steamrollered flat, to the immersive War Room 2015 and on to new work, such as Island and Flag, made in 2022. The book also explores the full range of her practice, from her monumental collective embroidery, as well as her films and a wealth of her innovative drawings, prints and photographs. No other contemporary artist has worked so closely with such a wide range of individuals, groups and institutions: the British Army, The Royal Mint, Abbey Road Studios, prisoners, school children, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, whistleblowers and the UK Parliament among many others. Featuring a new, extended interview with Tate Britain Director of Exhibitions and Displays Andrea Schlieker, as well as insights and reflections from a selection of writers and collaborators, Cornelia Parker is an authoritative and captivating survey of one of Britain’s best-loved and most acclaimed artists.

In October 2018 Cornelia Parker's Transitional Object (PsychoBarn) lands in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. This meticulous and unsettling installation - first shown on the roof of The Metropolitan Museum of Art against the skyline of New York's Central Park - is half stage set, half sculpture. The work, which draws on archetypal images of American culture such as the red barn and the infamous Bates motel from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, will now be seen against a backdrop of Burlington House's neoclassical buildings. Cornelia Parker was elected a Royal Academician in 2009. She has since had solo shows at the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester, and the Frith Street Gallery, London. She is well known for her installations, including Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View (1991), a reconstruction of an exploded shed, which now forms part of Tate's collection. Generously illustrated with supporting imagery and installation shots, this book comprises a conversation with the artist and a text on the work's installation in London. Transitional Object (PsychoBarn) will be on display in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, from October 2018 to March 2019.

A collection of writings by a celebrated playground architect. This volume collects writings from the 1960s-70s by architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, who urged city planners to recognize playgrounds as crucial sites for childhood development. In texts as diverse as a short history of play, private reflections, and a public appeal for children's rights, Hahn Oberlander develops a theory of architecture that requires users' input--especially children. This attention to care permeates every aspect of her work, from her use of recycled materials to her preference for building on vacant lots. An introduction by Jane Mah Hutton rounds out this collection, exploring intersections of active play, ecological thinking, and enthusiastic advocacy at the center of Hahn Oberlander's writing and practice.
