Angels in the American Theater: Patrons, Patronage, and Philanthropy examines the significant roles that theater patrons have played in shaping and developing theater in the United States. Because box office income rarely covers the cost of production, other sources are vital. Angels - financial investors and backers - have a tremendous impact on what happens on stage, often determining with the power and influence of their money what is conceived, produced, and performed. But in spite of their influence, very little has been written about these philanthropists. Composed of sixteen essays and fifteen illustrations, ""Angels in the American Theater"" explores not only how donors became angels, but also their backgrounds, motivations, policies, limitations, support, and successes and failures. Subjects range from millionaires Otto Kahn and the Lewisohn sisters to foundation giants Ford, Rockefeller, Disney, and Clear Channel. The first book to focus on theater philanthropy, ""Angels in the American Theater"" employs both a historical and a chronological format and focuses on individual patrons, foundations, and corporations.

The untold history of lesbian life from those who have lived it! Lives of Lesbian Elders: Looking Back, Looking Forward illuminates the hopes, fears, issues, and concerns of gay women as they grow older. Based on interviews with 62 lesbians ranging in age from 55 to 95, this very special book provides a historical account of the shared experiences of the lesbian community that is so often invisible or ignored in contemporary society. The book gives voice to their thoughts and feelings on a wide range of issues, including coming out, identity and the meaning of life, the role of family and personal relationships, work and retirement, adversity, and individual sources of strength and resilience. Cast off and overlooked at best or victims of scorn and prejudice at worst, lesbians in the twentieth century lived dual lives, their full voices unhearduntil now. Lives of Lesbian Elders chronicles the life choices they made and their reasons for making them, set against the contexts of culture, politics, and the social mores of the eras in which they lived. Their stories of courage, resilience, resourcefulness, pride, and independence help restore lesbian history that has been forgotten, distorted, or disregarded and provide the information necessary to meet the future needs of aging lesbians. Lives of Lesbian Elders gives aging lesbians a chance to discuss their thoughts on a variety of topics, including:Coming out You didn’t talk about it . . . Until two years ago, I never even referred to a lesbian or would I allow the word to pass my lips I used to sneak into libraries and read about homosexuality and back in that era, it was not classy . . . it was classified as a disorder of some type Identity The only difference between me and anybody else is that I just happen to be sleeping with a woman I think I grew up not really knowing who I was and, I think, probably fighting all my life trying to find out who I was Family I feel very connected with the lesbian community here . . . I guess I would call that family Many years ago, my sister said: ’I think when they’re ready, you need to explain to (the nieces) what a lesbian is, because I want them to hear the correct story . . . I want them to hear what it really is and not all these stupid rumors that go around’ Work I was going to become a youth minister at one point and it dawned on me in high school that there was no way the church was going to let me work with kids I didn’t really finish my career . . . I still have dreams about the military and about not finishing . . . It was my choice, but it wasn’t really my choice Aging and the Future I think financing, of course, is a real big problem for lesbian women I have a concern that if anything should happen to my partnerin growing olderof being isolated from the gay community . . . and much more! Lives of Lesbian Elders: Looking Back, Looking Forward also includes appendices that present demographic data on the women who were interviewed for the book, information on historical timelines, and suggested readings on lesbian history. The book is an invaluable addition to the growing collective history of lesbians in the United States.

The present volume covers the physiology of the visual system beyond the optic nerve. It is a continuation of the two preceding parts on the photochemistry and the physiology of the eye, and forms a bridge from them to the fourth part on visual psychophysics. These fields have all developed as independent speciali ties and need integrating with each other. The processing of visual information in the brain cannot be understood without some knowledge of the preceding mechanisms in the photoreceptor organs. There are two fundamental reasons, ontogenetic and functional, why this is so: 1) the retina of the vertebrate eye has developed from a specialized part of the brain; 2) in processing their data the eyes follow physiological principles similar to the visual brain centres. Peripheral and central functions should also be discussed in context with their final synthesis in subjective experience, i. e. visual perception. Microphysiology and ultramicroscopy have brought new insights into the neuronal basis of vision. These investigations began in the periphery: HARTLINE'S pioneering experiments on single visual elements of Limulus in 1932 started a successful period of neuronal recordings which ascended from the retina to the highest centres in the visual brain. In the last two decades modern electron microscopic techniques and photochemical investigations of single photoreceptors further contributed to vision research.

D&M Between 2 Men began its life in January 2018 when Andrew contacted Martin who was hospitalised after a fall, and the question popped in his mind, 'As men, why don't we talk about the moments we are struggling' He suggested writing a co-operative poetry chapbook together. Martin agreed and that was the beginning of a deep and meaningful poetry conversation between the two men. The chapbook soon became a full-length poetry book as the questions (and some answers) began to surface. Over several months, Andrew and Martin wrote their poetry via e-mails, Messenger texts, and even the occasional face to face cafe meet up. What began as poems prompted by keywords, such as nightmares, masculinity, femininity, emotions, fears, love and hate, evolved into deeper and more meaningful conversations. D&M Between 2 Men is a collection of personal and vulnerable stories in poem format, that examines some of the issues on the minds of these two younger and older poets. What was Andrew's goal? To produce a poetry book that was an insightful read and that, itself, would create real conversations between us all. Ideas and concepts that we seldom express publicly, blocked by fears or stigma. By having two grown men truly open up, it could help others to realise that they are not alone, and that their stories could also find the light of day. Pandora's box has been opened. Some of the questions posed are answered. Some are heavy. Some are lighter. All are written with a caring touch. An intense experiment. A truthful d&m between two men.
