On December 5, 2011, in the prime of his life, Patrick McGoldrick was diagnosed with ALS-a disease that typically takes your life within three years. For Patrick it was much shorter. Barely one year later, on December 26, 2012, he breathed his last breath. The impact of Patrick's story, both in his living and his dying, spread across the world and thousands leaned in to learn from his journey. Who was this man who would not stop praising God even while everything seemed so unfair? He was a father, a husband, a pastor and a friend to many-and he left a legacy of integrity and changed lives in his wake.Who Do You Trust? is a compilation of sermons that Patrick delivered before he died. Included is his last sermon, preached from a disease-ridden body with slurred speech, but heard by thousands across the world.
Geometry with Trigonometry

Geometry with Trigonometry

Patrick D Barry

Woodhead Publishing

Geometry with Trigonometry Second Edition is a second course in plane Euclidean geometry, second in the sense that many of its basic concepts will have been dealt with at school, less precisely. It gets underway with a large section of pure geometry in Chapters 2 to 5 inclusive, in which many familiar results are efficiently proved, although the logical frame work is not traditional. In Chapter 6 there is a convenient introduction of coordinate geometry in which the only use of angles is to handle the perpendicularity or parallelism of lines. Cartesian equations and parametric equations of a line are developed and there are several applications. In Chapter 7 basic properties of circles are developed, the mid-line of an angle-support, and sensed distances. In the short Chaper 8 there is a treatment of translations, axial symmetries and more generally isometries. In Chapter 9 trigonometry is dealt with in an original way which e.g. allows concepts such as clockwise and anticlockwise to be handled in a way which is not purely visual. By the stage of Chapter 9 we have a context in which calculus can be developed. In Chapter 10 the use of complex numbers as coordinates is introduced and the great conveniences this notation allows are systematically exploited. Many and varied topics are dealt with , including sensed angles, sensed area of a triangle, angles between lines as opposed to angles between co-initial half-lines (duo-angles). In Chapter 11 various convenient methods of proving geometrical results are established, position vectors, areal coordinates, an original concept mobile coordinates. In Chapter 12 trigonometric functions in the context of calculus are treated. New to this edition: The second edition has been comprehensively revised over three years Errors have been corrected and some proofs marginally improved The substantial difference is that Chapter 11 has been significantly extended, particularly the role of mobile coordinates, and a more thorough account of the material is given

This primer provides a much needed introduction to the organionitrogen chemistry. Nitrogen plays a key role in all areas of organic chemistry, from DNA and proteins through pharmaceuticals to man made drugs and new material. Despite this large coverage, there are just a handful of key principles which underpin the chemistry. This concise primer covers these principles discussing all of the main organonitrogen functional groups. It develops the themes logically under three specific sections, giving a clear overview of the synthesis, reactions and properties of organonitrogen compounds.
Advanced Plane Geometry

Advanced Plane Geometry

nidottu
This book begins at the point where Professor Barry's text 'Geometry with Trigonometry' leaves off, and develops advanced elements of plane geometry. It culminates in an account of the geometry of conics in the complex projective plane. Along the way it considers invariants of affine, projective, and complex-affine plane geometry under the various appropriate group actions. The ideas and progressive generalisations are introduced in a gradual way, and thoroughly explored at each stage. Some of these ideas go back to difficult and little-read works from the nineteenth century, and are here rescued and made more accessible. Included are many gems of plane geometry that originated with masters such as Newton, Pascal, Carnot, Simson, and Desargues, and unexpected variations on classical Greek results such as Pythagoras' Theorem. The material is almost all accessible to anyone who understands elementary plane geometry.

Today's global media sustains a potent new environmental consciousness. Paradoxically, it also serves as a far-reaching platform that promotes the unsustainable consumption ravaging our planet. Patrick Murphy musters theory, fieldwork, and empirical research to map how the media communicates today's many distinct, competing, and even antagonistic environmental discourses. The media draws the cultural boundaries of our environmental imagination--and influences just who benefits. Murphy's analysis emphasizes social context, institutional alignments, and commercial media's ways of rendering discussion. He identifies and examines key terms, phrases, and metaphors as well as the ways consumers are presented with ideas like agency and the place of nature. What emerges is the link between pervasive messaging and an "environment" conjured by our media-saturated social imagination. As the author shows, today's complex, integrated media networks shape, frame, and deliver many of our underlying ideas about the environment. Increasingly--and ominously--individuals and communities experience these ideas not only in the developed world but in the increasingly consumption-oriented Global South.

In a corner of the Big Cypress Swamp, to the north of the Florida Everglades, lives Charlie Jumper, and eighty-six-year-old Seminole man. Unlike the younger American Indians who have adopted white civilization, Charlie and his wife cling to the old ways, hunting and fishing in the great swamp and farming a tiny plot of higher ground. Charlie has been diligently teaching his grandson, Timmy, about the swamp and its creatures. But their simple existence is suddenly threatened when a large tract of swamp is bought by a corporation, and Charlie is told that he will have to leave. From his youth, Charlie remembers the slaughter of egrets and alligators by the white man and the logging of the giant cypress. Rather than surrender the land that is his life to this final indignity, Charlie decides to fight back. It is an uneven contest. First come the great machines that silt up the streams; then the workmen inadvertently poison the marsh; and, attempting to sabotage the construction equipment, Charlie’s best friend is killed. Realizing that there can be no compromise with the white man who destroys all he touches, Charlie leaves his family and feels into the swamp, seeking the lost island known in the Seminole legends as Forever Island.
Climate, Environment, and Society in the Pacific during the Last Millennium
The nature of global change in the Pacific Basin is poorly known compared to other parts of the world. Climate, Environment, and Society in the Pacific during the Last Millennium describes the climate changes that occurred in the Pacific during the last millennium and discusses how these changes controlled the broad evolution of human societies, typically filtered by the effects of changing sea level and storminess on food availability and interaction. Covering the entire period since AD 750 in the Pacific, this book describes the influences of climate change on environments and societies during the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age, focusing on the 100-year transition between these – a period of rapid change known as the AD 1300 Event.
