The Book of Daniel in the Hebrew Bible gives no information about Daniel's early life or information about the queen of Babylon. The book is mostly about King Nebuchadnezzar's increasing dementia, and little about Daniel himself. The queen is mentioned only as one who summoned Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall at Belshazzar's feast. She was not given a name. Upon extensive research into the ancient empires of Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, China, and Egypt, the story comes forth. She was Queen Nitocris, designer and architect of the rebuilding of the City of Babylon. She was named after Queen Nitocris of Ancient Egypt, who lived 2000 years before her. Daniel was brought into her city, Babylon, as a slave. He became her spiritual teacher and she was his friend. After Daniel's death in Persia, she carries his teachings and friendship in her heart. His teachings and her quest for purpose and love take her on adventures to China, the fabled Silk Road, India, and Egypt. The author, Carole Lunde, traveled to the middle east and Egypt. Her research for this mysterious queen, who was barely mentioned in the Hebrew Testament, caused her to investigate the ancient histories of Babylonia, Persia, and China around 550 BCE to find this queen and write her story. The author has published nine books on spirituality and Bible fiction, illuminating the lives of other nameless women in the Hebrew Testament.

It is read eagerly by young people; and there is hardly an elf so devoid of imagination as not to have supposed for himself a solitary island in which he could act Robinson Crusoe, were it but in the corner of the nursery." (Ballantyne 7) With these words, John Ballantyne reinstates Robinson Crusoe (1719) as a novel appealing to younger readers in his essay about "Daniel De Foe sic]", published in 1810. And indeed: Although the implicit reader of the first novel in English literature was not specifically mentioned to be of young age, "children have been its principal readers throughout the last 300] years" (Lundin 199). Thus, it is not surprising that novels also popular with a younger audience - such as Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson - resemble the famous castaway narrative by repeating its main topics and motifs like the solitary island and the shipwreck (Green 143). One of the more recent adaptations of Robinson Crusoe is Terry Pratchett's Nation, published in 2008: Taking place "on a South Sea island in a skewed version of the 19th century" (Boyce), the story centers around the cultural encounter of the shipwrecked, adolescent daughter of a British colonial governor, called Daphne, with an indigenous boy named Mau, whose whole nation was obliterated by a tsunami. Whereas Robinson Crusoe can be clearly considered to be an imperialist and racist novel, with its protagonist becoming the "true symbol of the British conquest" - as James Joyce puts it in his essay about Daniel Defoe in 1912 (Joyce 10) - Pratchett's book has been appraised by critics as a "novel of ideas, a ferocious questioning of vested cultural attitudes and beliefs" (Dirda), and said to reveal "the stupidity of "ignorance and prejudices i.e. concerning race]" (

Imagine, a friend loans you their lake house for the weekend, while they are traveling out of the country. You show up ready to spend some great leisure time out on the lake. But shortly after you arrive, a massive storm sets in and lingers for the next several days. As you stand inside, watching the rain pour down, you begin a search for something to do. The only thing you come across is an opened box that contains a Jig-Saw puzzle. The lid is missing, so you have no grasp of what picture will finally appear when it is assembled. You also don't know how many pieces there should be, or if they are all there. Even worse, you consider that this might be two different puzzles that have had the pieces co-mingled. Despite your feeling of dread you begin the assembly process anyway.This is essentially what members of the Babb families of North Carolina have to do when assembling their family tree. The various branches present one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of our collective family tree. Remaining records are scarce, many are missing, some could be from other trees and several pieces look identical. There are more missing links than can easily be discussed. We see a large number of branches with no trunk to connect them. Inspite of these obstacles, a single document sheds light on a connection between the two trees and I work toward uniting them and finding a path back to England.
