Draws on concepts from political sociology, organizational analysis, and contemporary social theory. Avoids dense theoretical debate. Includes case studies and concluding chapter summaries for students and scholars.

Politics on the Endless Frontier

Politics on the Endless Frontier

Daniel Lee Kleinman

Toward what end does the U.S. government support science and technology? How do the legacies and institutions of the past constrain current efforts to restructure federal research policy? Not since the end of World War II have these questions been so pressing, as scientists and policymakers debate anew the desirability and purpose of a federal agenda for funding research. Probing the values that have become embodied in the postwar federal research establishment, Politics on the Endless Frontier clarifies the terms of these debates and reveals what is at stake in attempts to reorganize that establishment.Although it ended up as only one among a host of federal research policymaking agencies, the National Science Foundation was originally conceived as central to the federal research policymaking system. Kleinman’s historical examination of the National Science Foundation exposes the sociological and political workings of the system, particularly the way in which a small group of elite scientists shaped the policymaking process and defined the foundation’s structure and future. Beginning with Vannevar Bush’s 1945 manifesto The Endless Frontier, Kleinman explores elite and populist visions for a postwar research policy agency and shows how the structure of the American state led to the establishment of a fragmented and uncoordinated system for federal research policymaking. His book concludes with an analysis of recent efforts to reorient research policy and to remake federal policymaking institutions in light of the current "crisis" of economic competitiveness. A particularly timely study, Politics on the Endless Frontier will be of interest to historians and sociologists of science and technology and to science policy analysts.

All the mice in the kingdom that saw him from a distance backed off and quickly fled the other way, probably hoping they had not been spotted. Those less fortunate, quickly learned the folly of being in the path of a mouse gone mad.Egon had already given orders to have all the mouse soldiers ready by the time he made it to the front of the castle. The mouse soldiers were lined up row by row by the time Egon made it out to the castle's courtyard. Many gulped when Egon appeared."Mice " Egon bellowed."Yes, King Egon." The mouse soldiers shivered as they quickly knelt in unison.King Egon thrust his sword in the air above his head. "We are on our way to the Ice Palace. Nordika thinks her army can protect Dustin and that young girl. Can she protect them?" Egon said with an evil laugh. The mouse soldiers said nothing. They hung their heads low."You " Egon hollered as he pointed to one of the mouse soldiers up front. All heads immediately turned. Some mice could be heard sighing with relief. Egon was not speaking to them. The soldier Egon pointed out quickly ran forward. Directly in front of Egon, he knelt down on one knee and bowed his head. "Yes, King Egon," he said meekly, almost in a whisper. Tears could be seen welling up in the soldier's eyes."I remember you from our last battle," Egon continued as he walked from side to side with his head held high. The poor mouse soldier softly responded, "Yes.""Stand and look behind you " Egon ordered while he rammed his sword into its holster. The mouse soldier jumped up and looked at the rows of mouse soldiers still kneeling with their faces partly lowered."Now, tell me what you see."The mouse soldier looked perplexed and gulped. In a shrill and confused voice, he responded, "Mouse soldiers?"Egon walked from left to right and templed his sharp claws, tapping them together in front of his chest. "Yes, mouse soldiers," he affirmed in a commanding low voice. "And none of those faces will be here tomorrow if we don't get that girl and Dustin by the stroke of the next hour."Egon then charged forward. The mouse soldiers followed quickly behind him. Their long tails swished from side to side, leaving marks in the snow.

The land is full of enchantment and magic but seldom a happy ending. ◊◊◊"Do you have any questions about your orders?" The Commander of the Trolls said. His deep voice echoed off the walls of the cave like the clap of thunder. "Sir, your orders were clear," the lead troll replied. He then shot a glance at the other troll. "No questions, Sir," the second troll remarked, avoiding eye contact with the Commander. Although he stood as straight as he could, his back was still slightly hunched. The Commander continued, "Serihilda must be handled tonight." His voice was monotone, utterly void of any emotion. And his black eyes looked like pools of darkness on his huge head. "We will take care of her before the sun rises," the lead troll responded. "Do you know the consequences if you are not successful?" The Commander glared at the trolls-one then the other ... The Commander sniffed hard. Green ooze that had dripped down his face from his nostrils was sucked back up into his nose. The Commander then spat the green glob out of his mouth onto the ground. SPLAT With a dismissal wave of his hand, the Commander of the Trolls turned and walked away. Both trolls listened to the sound of the Commander's heavy footsteps. "We must depart now." The eyes of the lead troll glimmered.
